The actual class/skill mechanics I love, the gameplay is fast and actioned & though I do not like the pretty obvious balancing issues, balancing will never be a deal breaker to me.

However these are the main problems I believe are:

1) Matchmaking does not pair players against those of relative skill. Every game I’ve played in pvp has some sort of way to keep players fighting against enemies of equal or close skill levels. System could try to match players based on glory rank in brackets (1-10, 11-20 etc). Now this doesn’t mean a higher up player is automatically better, but they will have many more games & hours clocked in pvp than someone just starting. This way, it prevents new players from getting constantly crushed & long-term players having no challenges. Point #2 would allow this

2) The idea of choosing your server was cool in theory, but I feel it doesn’t work (we desperately need a dueling system for this to work). The spvp interface should offer only the game variant and you “queue”. The game starts when the entire lobby has been found, this prevents uneven teams. The games would end and return you to the mists, and offer roughly 20 seconds to exit the queue. If everyone stays, the next random map is selected if not, the next game begins when the empty slots are filled. This prevents uneven teams, low pop. games etc. For point #1, if a player is say in the 40 bracket & is having a long wait for a queue, the system would automatic expand into the 30’s bracket and so forth until a game is found. Much like halo 3’s matchmaking.

3) Queuing in Spvp as a party. People love to play pvp with their friends. I know tournaments offer this but many rarely have 5 friends online at once and maybe don’t want to have a very competitive experience. Allow players to join the “queue” as a group, this way friends can play rounds with each other rather than the constant team switching and game hopping until they end up together.

4) More game variants. I cannot stress this enough. Conquest gets tiresome and repetive. There is so many good game variants for pvp out there, add some in! Capture the Flag, DeathMatch, Slayer, King Of The Hill, Oddball, Assault etc. The list is endless. More variants need to be added and the PvP interface would only allow you to queue for a game variant remember then it randomally selects the server & map for you.

5) Glory Awarding. Many people now are ignoring even the conquest objective because it doesn’t offer enough glory compared to just killing. There needs to be an increase & expansion in glory exp rewards for objective based actions and less focus on kills. An example would be if the player is holding off an enemy engaged on the same point. There should be a small amount of glory for say “Objective Defence” & “Objective Offence” that ticks every given time for the two players that are fighting over the point. Example would be for every five seconds in locked combat, 5 glory points could be awarded. And If the defender kills the attacker, than a larger possibly 20 point glory award is given for “Objective Defended” and vice versa.

I love Guild Wars but these are my big concerns. Would love to hear what others think. I believe these are some core reasons that PvP is not doing as well as it should be.

On a related topic:

I do like the idea of every player being even matched, it doesn’t force a grind or wait to begin PvP. However, I think there should be a reward for every single hotjoin match won (especially in consideration with above points). A player should have the option of three rewards; A PvP chest in their glory bracket, a tournament ticket (please let’s get paids more teams) & a PvE token.

Why PvE tokens? Well, I know some feel PvP is a waste of time since there is no reward past the Mists. I’ve also heard others feel disconnected from their character while in PvP, almost like its not the same person. Both valid points – I both agree with.

If a PvE token based system was implemented, this could be addressed. Offering a token as a potential award for winners, the player could stockpile these tokens much like paid tournament tickets. However, the tokens would go towards a PvE chest (Bronze, Silver & Gold and say 5,10 & 15 tokens). These PvE chests would give the player a randomly selected item (but usable by class) that has unique cosmetics in game, features of a PvP item cosmetic or even standard PvE cosmetics. To take this a step past cosmetics. Make these items from PvE chests cross-platform. Meaning:

If I get a unique Svanir Bow (modeled on the pvp version) from a PvE chest I can equip this to my character. The difference is, in the Heart of the Mists, the weapons stats replicate those of the PvP bows. Exactly the same as PvP items now. But, if you travel to PvE or even WvW you can still use this equipped item. The item level would replicate your current level and its stats randomly selected in accordance to your current level as well. These items also could be used with transmutation stones if you desire to switch stats.

I believe giving this option to work for PvE tokens & collect unique PvE items that serve all functions of the game would be a great addition. It gives players a incentive to win PvP, play PvP and above of else, feel rewarded. It would also remove that troubling issue of working on your character and have a great feeling of accomplishment in the Mists only to travel to PvE and be completely different, as if your character isn’t even the same. I really want to see this or at least something similar brought to PvP.

1) tPvP matchmaking is coming. sPvP matchmaking doesn’t really make much sense due to hotjoin’s structure, and I don’t think changing the way that works would be a positive change

2) What you’re suggesting isn’t something that really would make sense to change in hotjoin, but could be looked at as a new mode in between hotjoin and tPvP. I really have no idea what you mean by the dueling comment so I’ll skip it.

3) Queuing as a party is very easily abused for griefing. While I can see reasons for some people wanting it, there’s also a lot of reasons for keeping it away. Other than being able to coordinate a faceroll, is there really any reason you have to be on the same team as your friends instead of playing against them?

4) This is something that has pretty much been talked to the ground. Those convinced it is a good idea generally refuse to even listen to the arguments against it, and those opposed to it will never be convinced otherwise. I’m fairly certain there’s a couple threads about it on the first page of this forum.

5) Glory gain could use some retooling.

Ok so for 1, great. Tpvp is going to have matchmaking, so a small portion of the PvP community (basically the heavy competitors) will have this. From what I’ve been reading, Tpvp is completely dead as is.

2) I mean if you remove the option to join an empty game, “dueling” or as best as dueling gets right now would be gone. I join an empty server with a friend and we duel against each other. If only full games are offered, you can’t do that.

3) Yes, there would be a chance of premades but any game known for PvP or multiplayer lets you join with friends. Imagine the failure of COD, Battlefield, WoW, Halo etc if you only by chance played with a friend. The game series would of run themselves into the ground already.

4) Game types are needed. One game type is not enough to keep a large community alive. Again, if you look at games with thousands of active players and lead the largest multiplayer bases, they all have multiple PvP game types. So unless Anet only wants people who love Conquest and will never get tired of it great, but you’d be limited the game to a less than average player base. Already mists is a ghost town.

And I absolutely hate COD but they do support the correct things you need to have a large multiplayer base.

To add, for point #3, with the idea to have PvP matching based on level, if your joining with a group then the system could take an average of all the players involved levels and place you into the according bracket.

I’ve had other games I’ve played outright ruined by #3. People already try to stack as it is at times, it doesn’t need to be easier.

I know premades and stuff like that can ruin the game. But myself and 7 of my friends have stopped playing since we never can actually play together.

Your problem is you think tournaments are only for the hardcore. Tournaments are for everyone but the newest and most casual players. Free tournaments are comprised of mainly inexperienced players, not hardcore teams. You don’t even need a full 5 to play with your friends, grab your friends that are on and press submit.

Allowing groups to play in the hotjoins together just allows for the face rolling of casual players.

You don’t need 5 friends to join a tournament. You can join with any number of people and press submit. Other slots will fill automatically.
Adding new game modes would stop the current bunker meta in tournaments, and people would need to have some variety. Of course here I’m talking about having maps with different objectives for each tourney round. However, problem would be people being able to change class at any time, or between rounds. That should be fixed.
Make something similar to HA and everyone will be happy

Lack of pvp population should be added. Even free tournaments have a massive Q nowadays

Ok, how do I make this clear? I am not talking about tournaments, at all. Tournaments are 5 vs 5, great ok, well I play with 7 friends. Now, inform me how….do we play together when a tournament team cap is 5?

More to the point, I’m saying Spvp should allow players to group together. Since it’s casual, let people play with their friends. Not everyone enjoys only an option of 5vs5 if they want to play with their friends. A large majority of players enjoy larger PvP game caps. Why else would so many people (including myself) buy Battlefield 3 for PC and refuse to buy it for xbox since PC holds 64 players when Xbox is 24. 8vs8 is even small for Spvp, I think 10vs10 should be the minimum but i can deal with that. I have never seen a game restrict players from pvp’ing with friends, ever. I also watched a lot of tweets when it released with players saying they would quit the game if this wasn’t addressed.

So the Mists population (paids especially) is dead. Clearly, there’s something majorly missing from Spvp. Not saying my point are the solution, but something needs to be done.

I only need one. Absolutely no balance. Certain professions you can do everything right and still lose badly to someone spamming 1 or 2 buttons with no clue what there doing other than reading an OP build off the interwebs. Till this is fixed a large segment of the population won’t pvp. Matches will suck, tPvP will have long queues, and this will NEVER become an eSport.
