Is there any reason that hot-join PvP is set up for 8v8 rather than TPvP’s 5v5?

It doesn’t let newer players practice for the preset roles of 5v5 PvP, and just encourages zerging.

If I wanted to zerg, I’d go to WvW.

Fully agree, i can’t image new players being attrackted by that kind of pvp. In hot-join there are some battles that start 1v1, but close to never ends in 1v1. I dont dont have a single clue why its 16ppl on a map for 10. Ok, if someone leaves a 8v8, it’s less noticable, but 6v6 would imo be way better. I just hate getting daily that way, i don’t play tournaments every day, so i do hot-join for it, but that’s more frustration than fun.
edit: apperently they are making 5v5 servers as well, but it might take long.

I believe a major reason is because it’s at the bottom and new players (which I’m assuming the OP is) didn’t even think about it being down there. Maybe 2 tabs would work better.

Also, keep in mind the major reason it is still unpopular is the fact that the scoring system remains unchanged. As long as zerg gameplay is the best way to gain glory while simultaneously being punished for good conquest gameplay, then the more players in a game will be optimal. More people to kill and more people to cap so you can recap, now that’s GLORY! Or, a shame…

I’ve been practicing 20 ranks of Hot joinable.
Finally tried tPvP 5v5… All that time at hot joinables was just a waste of time.
5v5 has NOTHING to do with 8v8. Totally different gameplay.

IMHO, the mere presence of 8v8s is one of the major contributing factors detering players from playing 5v5s in hotjoins.

1, The addition of 5v5 hotjoins at this point in time means that most players are accustomed to the playstyle of 8v8s. Seeing how different 5v5s play out, players would naturally go back to 8v8s.

2, Natural human reluctance to change aside, 5v5s demand a much higher need for team communication and coordination. Lack of such tools other than a chatbox do little to encourage players to enjoy 5v5s to their fullest.

3, The current system of allowing players to come in and out of the game and easily switch teams could also be causing a significant barrier to the enjoyment of 5v5s. Losing 1 player in 5v5s is much more significant than losing one in 8v8s.

4, 8v8s generally yield more glory because of increased opportunities to kill other players and higher turnover of point captures – as previously mentioned. Though that’s due to a misaligned glory system.

imo, ANet got it right the first time.

5v5 doesn’t work nearly as well as 8v8 for pub servers, much like TF2 pub servers are usually 24, but competitive TF2 is 6v6.

you need a buffer for population ebb & flow. playing in a 5v4 match means you will probably lose, it’s a difference of 20% effectiveness that 4 players need to compensate for. just one player stepping out has a large impact.

8v7 match by contrast is 12.5% difference with 7 players available to make up that difference.

the result is that it is often even harder to “play to win” on a 5v5 server than an 8v8 server, & usually within 2 or 3 game rotations, a full 5v5 server will be down to a 2v3 or duelling situation. ( which is fine, but isn’t exactly the tourney prep players are looking to get out of 5v5 servers )

again, custom 5v5 servers will solve this. i don’t really see a problem other than player perception & a general lack of patience. but as others mentioned, a better browser would really help casual players know that they have options. 1 NPC with different tabs for Free, Paid, Hotjoin 5v5 & Hotjoin 8v8 would be helpful.

5v5 would be nice if people didn’t constantly quit mid-game. Very rarely have I been able to play a 5v5 for the full duration of the match, usually someone rages when their team is losing making it 4v5 so their team loses even more, then more people rage etc. Even if I do manage to play a 5v5 for the whole match, by the time the next round starts, at least 2-3 people have left making it unbalanced all over again.
