For the most part, I tend to find Ranked to be way more toxic then unranked. With that being said, there is some grain of reason for the toxicity. When ever you introduce a reward(s) for something that is exclusive to a certain ladder, you will have some toxic elements to deal with. For most people, it would seem rather silly to be toxic over a mini or armor pieces but you do have some people who legit want to obtain them.

A lot of the toxic players I’ve ran into seem to be from other games. I’m not going to give those names but I assume it’s easy to guess which games they do come from.

The actual veteran loyal Guild Wars player base (guild wars prophecies – now) is actually very friendly and chill.

The best way to deal with it, as said above is to simply block or report them
(verbal abuse or spamming)

I do find it interesting with the idea on punishing overly toxic players, what are peoples thoughts and opinion on how it should and if it should be done?

I think the best way to “punish” it, would not be a suspension or a ban, because when they come back, they tend to be even more “upsetting” then they were before, and tend to rage about it. So instead, let them continue to play, but disable all chat (incoming and outgoing, NPC dialog, chat bubbles, etc.) for 24-48 hours depending on the severity of the infraction. Of course they could still use team speak, but that would require the other team members to be in there. But in TS they do have the option to report to their guild leader, and have the option of having their TS privilages removed. (But thats a different matter anet has no control over)

So basically, the punishment fits the crime. And not only for verbal abuse/spamming. If people are seige trolling, make it so they can’t place any seige, use any seige, build any seige or carry supply for X amount of time.

Of course things like botting, hacking, etc. should still be met with the ban hammer of justice.

That’s a really good idea too. I like that this thread is going in a constructive direction now.

I’d be okay with silencing players who are repeatedly reported for verbal abuse. I’d prefer bans, but for reasons pdavis laid out, those could be counter-productive.

The trick is that stricter enforcement (along with a faster response time) would have to come side-by-side.

Note that this would also send a considerable portion of the PvP community into a blind fury, so good luck with that.

Steps usually go like this:

GW2 sPvP is a heavy team game, which means that the team as a whole more than a specific player skill.

90% of the fights is a snowball, which means that the worse team will, regardless of the skill of a specific players, lose.

If someone in a team that is losing decides to stop fighting to rage on the chat it means that the kitten already hit the fan.

Which leaves 2 options left:
1- Stay silent and use the rest of the round to practice and improve myself.
2- Troll the raged for some last fun.

Then again, I don’t think PvP community in this game is toxic.
It’s just that the most “Love-and-peace” players and simply not used to deal with people under pressure.

I am usually not angry with the guy raging on me, if it happens, because I understand that the guy has a competitive spirit and the round isn’t going his way (and he can’t do anything about it).

On the other hand I, sometimes, do get really kittened off with people with a “I don’t care” behavior on ranked matchs.
At the very least they guy raging was putting some effort on winning.

I agree with P Davis.

To the OP, you really can’t control what others say to you (and I’m not talking about block features or getting offensive people banned) but you can control how you choose to feel about what is being said. This is evidenced by the fact that someone can say something in chat and some people will laugh at it and others will be offended by it.

The way I consciously calm myself whenever someone is rude in chat is to imagine that the person making the remarks is an AI, indifferentiable from a human. How silly would I feel that I let remarks from a computer get to me? When I think of this and the calming effect it has on me, it just reinforces the fact that words have no meaning/power other than what you choose to give to them.

What if someone is playing poorly? Or not ready for the ranked queue? Critique would help, yes?

The problem is, folks are so thin skinned that any critique is seen as “toxic”. There really are occasions when a teammate is useless and deserves some amount of instruction to avoid wasting people’s time.

I Agree that instruction is good; however, I do not believe that “newb go kill yourself” or “go find another game to play” are acceptable responses to a new player or someone who needs guidance on PvP with their class

I 100% agree with that.

Now, some quick info on myself. Before the December reset, when the ladder was MMR based, I spent a fare amount time floating around in the top 100.

I DO NOT think that I’m some top notch pvp’er, but I know enough about to game to play it correctly.

I will gladly accept tips and critiques, in fact I often as for it when I see someone do something that impresses.

What I do not like seeing is the unprovoked raging, flaming, racism, etc, towards others and myself.

I personally accept that it will happen and I keep going about my day. What bothers me about it though, is that I know that there are a large percentage of players who want to try pvp, but get discouraged and decide to leave the mists for good. What bothers me even more, is that this has become the standard of behavior that we as a community have grown to accept and expect.

Toxicity comes from being nice trying to introduce players to PvP, laying out some basic ground rules for them. As in things that help your team win and things that hurt your team.

I mean BASIC BASIC things like, don’t get the mobs unless absolutely necessary, don’t mob so far into the enemy lines that you can’t get ressed, and most of all don’t try to 1v1 a bunker on a point you don’t own.

Then have these people that you are trying to help, and have been pretty nice to in trying to show them how to play the maps, and then have everything completely ignored and then they get mad when you lose a team fight because of their ignoring your advice.

Here to second OP, been struggling with Mesmer on and off for two years now and the trash talk just made me quit. I can turn off chat and go offline, I can still see the “say bubbles” and seem to get hate mails. Whats worse, 90% of all the trash talkers are running cheese specs. So Its difficult to win 1v1.

I’ve seen some bad communities, Mobas are famous for being toxic, but even they don’t seem to be so bad as constantly telling people to kill themselves and sending people rope (leather strings) in mails. People come to this game to play and get away from the stress of real life. I don’t need anyone else then my doctor telling me I have autism, thank you very much.

Taking the higher moral ground since 1993.

Report them, it’s what I do.

I do and so do my friends. However, I see the same players doing the same thing every day.
Where is the accountability?

They tend to allow a lot for/as “passion” about the mode. That and I would guess that the mode can’t really afford the population loss that a purge of the toxicity would inflict on it.

Honestly though, any pvp environment generally has a fair amount of toxic players. It just comes with the game type.
