A way to differentiate teams without red/blue armor?
The red and blue gear is probably because of Anet’s “esport” bid. It would be hard for spectators to watch a game and know which player is on which team. I guess unless the nameplates were exclusive to your team (not enemy is always red, teammates always blue).
I wish we weren’t relegated to enjoying our PvP gear only for those short unimportant minutes in the Mists.. I can’t even enjoy my character’s armor on the loading screen, or in towns. And in a PvP match, it looks like somebody dumped a red or blue bucket of paint on me (sometimes it looks really silly when there are default colors in the armor that don’t match at all with those two colors).
The PvP and PvE community are so much more separated in this game than any other I’ve ever seen. You never need to interact or see each other, except for the PvP-er to buy some dye they didn’t get from chests, or the PvE-er traveling to the mists for a free portal to LA. If the PvP player wants to hang out with their friend outside of the mists, they are level 2, and in starter gear, and visa versa.
edit: maybe Anet can let us have our personal color schemed-gear when they implement a spectator mode. In the spectator mode, the teams can be easily just painted whatever color the interface wants.

Should make it a personal preference if you want the colors activated on your end, I would love to see my bright pink char smacking people with hundred blades. It wouldn’t be that challenging to fight people with a red name.

I agree OP, this is GW2, not crips and bloods online, so tired of the red and blue. Please change it asap, this is a bigger issue than any of the qq l2p balance issues.
It really needs to be an option (or the current system changed), i mean this game has an armor closet and a big aim in Spvp is collecting “cool” looking gear – yet that cool dyed up armor i just managed to get changes from cool to a bright red/blue blob as soon as i get in a match so what’s the point in bothering with the pvp armor collecting?.
Either have 2 options, the way it is now by default and a toggle to have only red/blue names (i had no issue at all in Rift with this), or keep it as 1 setup but simply make it so for enemies there is a red/blue smaller circle under them (this should be fine as everyone is currently a big painted target) and then when targeted a white circle goes around that one and their name gets bolded/underlined/highlighted somehow over their head (so you have a clear indication who is targeted).
I’d prefer the 2nd option if i’m honest, (like so).
I run into battle and infront of me would be 3 of my team and 4 of the enemy team, my team would have blue circles under them and the enemies would have red circles under them, i would then target someone and an extra white circle would go around the red circle under them along with their name changing from normal to on fire (highlighted) so i can clearly see who i am aiming at.
Simples, i get to see all the cool armor and i can still tell who is on my team and who is an enemy and who i have targeted.

To be honest, I think that the spectator mode should have the option of having a red and blue masking of the dyes. Beyond that, I really wish we could show off our dyes.

This really is like the first game that at at least I’ve played where this has been considered a problem. Red/blue is just another step towards making everyone feel like a nameless drone.
Red/Blue capes in Guild Wars 1 worked well enough, why not here?
A dev just posted about this 2 days ago. They aren’t going to change it.
its an easy fix, just let you keep your dye colors on if you want on your end but no matter what on another players screen in the match you will be entirely the color of the enemy team

Which begs the question of why they bothed with the whole PVP armor earning, i mean it’s one of the big aspects of sPVP (earning that great looking armor – that’s the rewards!) and yet when you go into a match it all looks blue or red. This is one of the things i love in GW2 (collecting the armor, dying it to how i like etc) and yet in sPVP i don’t even bother now as it all looks terrible due to the red/blue system.
To Anet, Is it really that hard to tell people apart with just red/blues names?, i mean do people really need to have the entire player red/blue just to be able to tell who they are attacking?.

Couldn’t there just be a colored aura of some sort, those with it are your enemies? Something to add a simple effect that isn’t hard to see and doesn’t cancel the whole armor color scheme- my idea would be a simple ICON where the name/hp bar appears above their head.

+1
HOLY CRAP I like that idea.
spectator and replay mode would be good enough for me to show off my sweet rainbow scheme armor.

I was thinking that exactly lol. as much as i hated them in gw1, i now miss them in gw2 XD
I don’t even get why we need colored teams. Other esports do just fine without plastering two colors over the members.
