Seems to be becoming a commonality for premades. Guardians with Spirit Weapons, Mesmers and Phantasms, Rangers + Pets, and all bringing Rockdogs as well. Only seeing premades do this.

This supposed to be PvP or PvP+AI?

You expect people NOT to stack extra targets/variables on the field to help clutter it up? They also serve the purpose in that many “aoe” melee attacks have a cap of a certain number of targets they will effect, so it’s very productive in limiting melee cleaving effectiveness as well.

I totally understand why they use it.

I’m curious as to why AI is playing such a prevalent role in PvP.

It doesn’t just clutter the field or absorb attacks. Guardian spirit weapons will chain disable and hit for solid dmg. We’re all aware that Mesmer phantasms do entirely too much dmg on top of providing copious boons when traited (and they all trait for it). Ranger pets track targets all the way to other side of the map and do more dmg than the Ranger himself. Add a rock dog to all of them and there’s no chance to even click on a target let alone take the time to tab through them all.

If I wanted to fight mobs I’d go do PvE

And guardian spirit weapons are invulnerable? some on perma-summon?

1v1, that hammer is about the closest thing I’ve found to a win button. Your not gonna turn the tide with 8 seconds of stability against a gs guardian, not when the hammer is available 2/3rds of the time, knocking you back every 3 swings and knocking you down for 3 seconds on command, at least twice every cycle (traited). They have too many pushes and pulls for you to even stay upright if played well. Forget about running any bread-and-butter combo. Throw in the tome of courage for full heals (really?) and you got an indestructible beast.

Of course everybody just gets focused and dies in conquest (albeit guardians less easily), but I’m talking 1v1 here. I know a spirit weapon guardian that is ridiculous. He only plays to win and got bored with that a long time ago. You have to bring a cheese condition build to beat these guys because it’s the only variable left weak enough to get at, and I just don’t put all my eggs in one basket like that. It feels too ‘paper/scissors/rock’.

This is one of my bigger issues with the game’s pvp at the moment – way too many pets resulting in way too much field clutter which gets even worse when dealing with abilities that intermittently drop target.

It’s pretty much a mess.
