ANet, take a serious look at rangers please.
You have your things mixed up, the unbeatable ranger doesn’t run away in 1v1 and doesn’t heal up and come back like ele does. It stays put and out sustains you with evades and massive regen and perma prot while it’s pet takes huge chunks out of you. It’s a bunker BM spec and it is the strongest duelist/pointholder spec in the game atm.
After all that I must say, no they are not OP, they lack teamfight and mobility, no burst and they can’t carry fights in xvx as an engy can do. It’s a really strong spec, but nothing over the top imo and quite easily focused down with a team.

I’ve only dabbled with bunker ranger builds before, and they are indeed good duelists, but how can they possibly be the best point holder spec? Limited knockbacks, poor condition removal, terrible stun breaks for point holding (LR will send you right off, QZ means you can’t heal for 5 seconds, totally not what you want in a stunbreak).
Melee pets are easily kited. The bunker build doesn’t do too much damage either so the lack of kill speed is a huge disadvantage relative to say, ele’s, also great duelists.

Actually this is the truth. However I would say it could be nerfed slight a little bit in exchange to other viable builds. But you don’t need 3 man to kill this build . A mesmer + thief will kill this spec quite easily due to the boon removal.
Rangers are strong duellist. However for teamfights they only provide healing spring :/.
Sorry, I’ll be more specific. BM is the best homepoint holder, obviously they can’t take the pressure a guardian can take in midfights, but they can easily handle everything in a 1v1 or even 2v1 situation against some classes. Your job is to prepare enemies for your pets, basically they focus you = pet makes mincemeat out of them, they focus pets = you swap and still keep pressure on them with sustained damage.
I agree that since it doesn’t have burst, it can’t kill bunker eles, but at the same time, they definitely don’t want to stand too long next to that spec, because in the long term, it will outsustain them and it will kill them. As an ex-warr, I’m used to learning/countering every strong spec I encounter, best way is of course to get the experience how they work first hand. Since my playstyle/fav prof is rubbish atm, I’ve been playing various specs in tournas recently. This is what I use in my BM spec: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQRAnY8fjEVd2JWWWs2Bi2jMZeM9Uke17UMK/fxUlIB;TwAg2CposxYjwGrNObk2saY0w+j5HA (copy-paste the link, too lazy to tinylink it, soz).
Can someone give me a link to this magical ranger build that owns people easily 1v2, but kind of struggles to win tournaments by itself?
BM ranger is a strong build but Ele bunker is better and a guardian too. Ele has better mobility, best downed #2 in game, 2 cantrip safe stomp, good sustained damage (Aoe too), and he shares a lot of boons in teamfight, guardian is the best holder in the game (less damage but more chance to hold well a point and stomp/ress enemies). Probably BM ranger has the best mix between survivability and damage, for this reason is a great duelist.

A ranger can be difficult as hell to beat in 1on1, but not to kill in1on1. If I outplay em I can get the kill. though im a condi engy so maybe that helps.
Rangers are still quite strong, but have had a lot of recent nerfs, I think they are reasonably balanced atm. However, rangers are indeed 1 of the strongest 1on1 classes. That doesn’t necessarily make em op unless they had a lot of strong other things, and they don’t. They are ok, not great in team fights. They are not super mobile between points like ele. And I cant imagine why it would take 3 ppl to kill a ranger.
Not OP.

I’m still trying to figure out where this incredible regen is coming from (unless Spirit of Nature is up, but the preferred elite is still Entangle I thought).
Without the regen boon, a ranger is healing maybe 200-300 hp per second, and that doesn’t all tick at once (the grandmaster trait is 133 hp every 2 seconds). Yes that is strong, but isn’t like it is impossible to outdamage. There is also the use of poison to suppress healing.
On top of that, it isn’t like a ranger is going to kill everybody when running this spec.
Just because a class has one spec that makes it good at something, it doesn’t mean that it is OP. Every class in the game has some sort of apex predator issue going on with builds, but that doesn’t mean we should scream nerf those good builds.
It means that classes need to be looked at as a whole and given some other viable options, because it is possible that with a future update, more hardcounters could be added to the game to create more build versatility (like the boon punishment talk), and then the builds that exist as being strong in the meta now wouldn’t have necessarily deserved a nerf at all.

Agreed, forgot to mention that.
It still doesn’t change that in general, the metagame now after the quickness nerf just favors bunker playstyles.
If every class had a number of competitive builds (this includes traits and utility options), I would be all for nerfing anything that was still standing out above other options.
But we just aren’t at the point in this game yet where it would be healthy for the function of any class to start nerfing things left and right, because most classes don’t have another build that would perform on an equally viable level, and it would hurt the game more than help it.
At least that’s my perception of it.

on 1v1, BM bunker ranger is only good against war(sry war), even against engi guard(rangers are always even or in favor against guardians imo but to kill a guardian is another thing) necro, bad but doable against thief mesmer(too much options too keep pets away while have great damage dealing to ranger) and lol against ele(lol try to kill an ele with your pet lol). (all with most popular build for their class)
On the other hand it is still not a good Spvp build cuz it is not a team fight build, trap build is still better in team fight and point holding.
Underwater healing>1v1 bunker ranger.
Sorry, I just don’t care when other classes can do its job better in mist.
Cmon bro, take a good look, ranger had already been nerfed so much without any sort of compensation already…
Pet now do not have their CD recharged upon switching, meaning no more f2 spam and infinite CC on dogs, infinite Aoe from lizards.
Quickness nerf meaning VERY SLOW stomp, VERY SLOW res, VERY MINIMAL damage bonus damage gained from pet switch (I already switch out my trap ranger’s bm point into nature line since I find 10 points on nature got much better skill choice now)
Not to mention they still did not unnerf the “shortbow animation glitch lie” even after the quickness nerf…
Empathetic bond had been nerfed so much that now it couldn’t just cleansed the massive condition caused by eng, nec, and mesmer.
All of the above nerf are WITHOUT any compensation to fill up the nerf.
GS buff is just meh at best since apart from making us more mobile, GS is not a strong weapon to be used in combat, just moderate at best.
(I’ll still bring a S+D or S+T instead of a GS for tournament)
Evade? Cmon, sword 2 evade is very unrealiable and short(evade occurs WAY TOO LATE after activation), sword 3 is kinda meh. The only reliable evade is from dagger 4 only. Compare to Guardian’s blocks, cleanse, barrier, and trapping skills, ranger’s survivability is just decent at best. (A pro guradian you CANNOT bring him down alone, seriously, if he got bring down by you alone, it only means that he’s a BAD guardian.)
Passive skills from survival trait? Seriously, the ONLY reliable CC breaker that ranger usually got is that 90 sec passive CC break, and is freaking long 90 secs that you cannot choose WHEN to activate. A good player can just randomly use any CC to waste your 90 secs CC breaker, and then do their CC combo on you and you’re dead (ele, guardian and war is good at this)
Those are all my experience of playing as a ranger, and yes, ranger is my main and I mostly only use ranger to do the PVP, so I know what I’m talking about.
I run exactly a BM spec like this that i came up with a few weeks ago, and yes it is INCREDIBLY strong as “Far-Point Assaulter” since it can kill a bunker while easily defend the point or keep it neutalized for a long period of time even 2v1.
I has great mobility as well and therefore a pretty viable build.
However, it is not OP.
This is due to the fact that it does not benefit the team like a guardian w. staff or D/D ele would do, easily stacking 20+ might AoE.
The only thing we have that is not self-centered is our heal, and the only thing it does is give regen and remove 1 condition every 3 second.
It shines when fulfilling the role it is supposed to, but is lacks in other areas such as support, team fights and heavy burst (whereas D/D shines in all roles due to heavy AoE heal and might plus good burst from Fire Attunement, and yes i have an elementalist as well)
I think it is pretty amazing how people tend to start whining about rangers, when not a few weeks ago everyone would agree they sucked balls. Instead of whining, come up with a build yourself that is just as strong.

I think its decided then.Rangers in BM build are very good at 1v1,got nice defense and dmg but they lack in teamfights.
I will add that they have nice mobility too.I use Greatsword and Signet of the Hunt and i can move pretty fast through the map.
Ranger imo are in a good state right now in PvP.I find 2 major problems tho
1.They can be easily replaceble(Example:“Dude we need a Ranger for our tournament team”“ehh i cant find one”“its ok lets take some other class(we are hoping for an ele)”
2.Not many speccs viable(Spirits not so good,Raw Power Rangers not so good,no burst build)
Yeah it’s a bit ridiculous. People are to the point where they are even calling rangers in every other game OP, or telling me (when I’m on my ranger) that of course I’m doing well with my fotm ranger (when I’ve been playing ranger since beta and virtually the same build since launch, AND I only run BM maybe 10% of the time).
There hasn’t been a single change in this game since launch that has changed a single viable build for rangers (same builds since day 1). People are not used to the new quickness, and probably not used to people playing their class well, and that is going to be the biggest source of the “X class is overpowered” argument.

You are totally right.I have said this before, the traps are the same from day 1 and after a few months became op.Now im watching a very interesting thread in Rangers forum that describes the Chilly Ranger(Rangers got a lot of access in chill cond).Maybe in a few months we will see ppl at forums complaining about this op constant chill build that Rangers suddenly started using

If the ranger takes it, its brutal healing to beat threw.
why would you ever choose to run troll unguent instead of healing spring as a bm ranger in spvp?
healing spring is way stronger and it gives really good support in teamfights as well – aoe condition remove, 15 sec water field, aoe reg and aoe vigor, all in one skill – there is literally no reason to run TU on a bm ranger build. furthermore why are all people running LR instead of signet?
your pet can be in the midfight clearing all conditions on your allies, while you assault far point, defend homepoint or do some other objective – then you swap pet and all conditions are gone.
It is a scaling issue with bunker stats not a ranger specific one look at bunker guards/ele/mesmers/eng its all the same cheese that bad players use.

Well i personaly run Troll Urgent for 2 reasons
1.smaller cd
2.You can move more freely and i find it more steady. While the initial heal from Healing spring is good i dont think the regen coming after is a trusty healing source when you are in the middle of a teamfight. Some classes can remove-steal boons
The other thing you said with the signet i do it all the time and i find it awesome.Cleanse all cond and swap pet.Problem?
the regen combined with natural healing and signet passive will net you at ~400 hp/sec. there is nothing more potent than a water field.
for instance you get 1797 healing without life sigil stacks by leaping through it once.
and it covers most points completely – this is where you should fight.
furthermore it’s so much support for your team and just overall stronger than TU as the heal is really hard to interrupt due to it’s low casttime. it reapplies reg/vigor on every tick.
Personally i dont use either vigor trait, either the healing signet but i can understand that its more team supportive this selection.
Still with troll urgent is about ~1000 hp/sec(with natural healing) without the initial heal tho but with more secs.
The way i play in tournaments i find more usefull the troll urgent.I go far point and if its 1v1 i stay,if back up comes i go help closest point,i run a lot from nodes to nodes thats why i use Troll urgent. But all these in pug-soloq mode, maybe if i play with an organized team and im suppose to stay in one place all the time healing spring will be better

Can someone link me this ranger BM build? I wanna see traits etc and how they work

Personaly, i run both signet and LR, mostly due to not having anything else worth taking, aside maybe muddy terrain ( unless you want to pump up pet damage with sick em or bring a ress with Search and rescue).
With LR you can last for quite long even against double burst ( like mesmer-thief) on far point, and if you call back your pet you can even kill the thief.
What’s your build batto ?

pet choice now changes a lot for me. f.e. you could run double canine and run 10% pet ability recharge instead of rending attacks or go for the canine trait or compassion training.
runes also vary – sometimes i run mercy or dwayna.
They are pretty, pretty strong, i can say they are best 1v1 spec/class atm. However in a team fight they aint that overpowered so i guess its fine.
Not to mention they are also the best 1v1 both downed class as well, if you go downed against a ranged you lost.
Pretty sure a good thief wrecks any ranger especially the bunker one
Cloak and dagger off pet is op
Ranger is gd 1v1 but since quickness nerf and engi changes/new builds engi is number 1 duelist imho.
Of course a BM ranger pet is stronger than necro elite skill, it’s their class mechanic – that’s like a ranger saying deathshroud is OP it adds way more survivability than taking Spirit of nature and that’s an ELITE!
The majority of what makes them slippery is certainly not in traits, it’s in weapon skill evades.
Can i see these vids of you consistently 2v1 ing people as ranger please?
The OP appears to have misspelled Ele in his thread, he might want to fix that.

No way #1 man a shatter mesmer will smash anything atm with mes if they’re dps build there’re dead already if they are bunker they better hope there friends show up. As far as ranger goes you have to see your enemy first and if you don’t there is a good chance you will lose and even if you do see them first a mesmer and guard can negate the range factor. #1 downed class I totally agree with.

faced one of these rangers last night i believe. very sustained healing, graet point holding, defintiely bunker and just slowly chipped away at my life. i was playing Guard, though not a bunker. any tips on facing them next time?
