Absolute most basic starter class for pvp
Fear not inexperienced scrub Turret Engineer is just the right thing for you! Just kidding, don’t do that -.-…
I’d suggest something tanky that can stay alive even if you don’t do much in a team fight, also something mostly stationary aka a Bunker who does not have to rotate much (as you need map knowledge and good fight-assessment skills for that) would be down the beginner lane. Since you already play Guardian in PvE why not start with a Bunker Guardian?
Here are some good builds to start off with:
Healing-Support Bunker Guardian
Also watch the videos contained in those guides.
If you want some general (even though slightly outdated) guidelines for sPvP I recomend the PvP for Dummies/Teach me PvP Series done by WoodenPotatoes and MattVisual (they are basically the same videos just from different perspectives). They teach you the very basics of sPvP as well as what Builds do for you and how to create your own (once you know what you are doing in the arena of course), stuff about PvP items and crafting (obviously heavily outdated by now) and even about more advanced stuff like tPvP compositions and strategies. I have collected the important MattVisual videos from that series in this playlist: here.
Have Fun!
+1 for being the most honest person to ever stumble into these forums. From the sounds of it, you don’t have you head completely wrapped around your characters abilities at lvl 80; so starting a new class is honestly probably out the the question. You would probably do the best just sticking with your Guard going in (Tanky spec as stated above). I would do hotjoins for a while (Practice mode) and then once you get a LOT of games in MAYBE move to Unranked. Ranked is highly competitive/ you would get steamrolled/ kitten your team off. Practice mode is for beginners and will have other beginners (and bored non beginners) in it. For the love of god, please do not go into Ranked lol.
Also, honestly PvP in this game is a lot more complex than it looks watching twitch. Since you had issues in other MMO’s it may not work out for you; but give it a go. If you HAVE TO try a new class just go with a Warrior. That would be the easiest to play newb mode on besides the class you already “know”.
P.S. The tureteer club is waiting for you! JK….but seriously they probably are.

Probably warrior. It doesn’t have a lot of buttons, but has solid survivability, mobility, and damage. It’s got room to learn to play very well, like any class, but it’s one of the easiest to learn without having a serious drawback.
Just make sure you look up a pvp-viable build like hambow or shoutbow: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_Hambow http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_Shoutbow
Both of these are pretty straightforward to get started. The first things you should learn:
1) Weapon swapping regularly
2) Clearing condi with cleansing ire and/or shouts
3) What skills do the most damage, and practice landing them.
4) How to play the downstate game with stuns, fears, stability, and banner (depending on spec).
Almost all of those lessons will apply to other classes, should you choose to branch out.
Bunker guard or engineer(turret) are also options because you won’t die easy, but you won’t kill much either. Well maybe you will with turret engineer, depending on your opponents…

Warriors are the most basic of the basic. Their skills were designed to be both effective and simple, so you don’t need to worry about resource management[Mesmer, Thief] extra skills[Elementalist, Engineer, Necromancer], AI[Ranger]. The next most basic would probably be the Guardian, as you don’t necessarily need to know everything about your class mechanic[Virtues] to get use out of them. Both heavy-armored classes have relatively straight-forward utility and weapon skills.
I think the most forgiving build is the standard hambow warr 0/0/6/2/6 build on Brigg’s link.
You can use celestial or soldier amulet with strength or hoelbrak runes.
Since you have a guardian, I think it would be a good idea for you to stick with it so you can have at least a small understanding of what’s going on. It’s hard enough to figure out what to do in a new area of the game, let alone trying to learn a new profession altogether at the same time. Try going to metabattle.com for some decent builds to try on your guardian for pvp.
Next, since pvp is a conquest game, there are various ways to maneuver the map given your team composition, and if you want to learn the rotations and such then I’m sure you could find some basic guides on youtube, which would be especially good for you because you can actually see what’s going on while someone describes what they’re doing and why. Youtube could also be used to find yourself a guardian build and watch it in action, too. Just try to filter videos by date so that you find builds that are relevant, and not from a long time ago.
Pvp is all about playing to your strengths, though. As a basic rule of thumb, if you’re playing a ‘bunker’ character with a lot of survivability and low damage, you want to be on points that your team has already capped, or wherever your teammates are, to help keep a point contested or belonging to your team. You don’t want to push to the farthest point away from your spawn if it belongs to the enemy and there’s a player defending it, because you won’t be able to kill him quickly to capture it, but if you play a very high dps bursty character that can take out other players quickly, then that’s exactly what you want to do – keep moving to points that don’t belong to your team and decap them, or join in on large fights and take someone out quickly then move on.
DPS characters are all about having high burst and high mobility so they can move quickly between points, decapping and killing enemies as fast as possible, while bunker characters are all about trying to maintain the points that they already have or prevent the enemy from capping a point by just staying alive for as long as possible on the point.
The great thing about being a guardian is that you can try out both and see which one you like best, because you could either go for a DPS meditation build or a bunker build if you like.
When I leveled my guardian I pretty much used a greatsword and didn’t fully understand traits and ignored them mostly. I didn’t really use any other weapons except a staff so I don’t understand what all they do at all. I tried an elementalist, but when I leveled that to 30 so far, I stayed in fire and didn’t really ever go into any other element.
I’m a very big casual player, and pvp has a tendency to move faster then my brain can keep up with. So I know I’ll never be good. My only goal is to not be a team liability. I’ll try a bunker build, but I don’t really understand team synergy really.
Even in the pve side, I don’t really understand how synergy quite works in this game. I know I can apply regen to people, which I guess is like a heal but kinda crappy. I’ve never really experimented really in classes. This game being so drastically different then any other mmo I’ve played it’s kinda daunting to get used to.
Also is that you He4rTL3sS?!
Also is that you He4rTL3sS?!
No, I really don’t like adding numbers into names. It looks stupid to me.

AHAHAHAHAHA +1 for non 1337 six year old names. When he posted that I thought it may have been you and audibly laughed. Glad it isn’t
Only numba’s in mah name are after the period. Working as intended.

I am a little confused now, did you get whom I was referencing or are you just genuinely amused about someone being able to pick a name that consists out of 1337 letters?
It looks stupid to me.
This ^^ is why I am amused. I share the same feelings

Ok, would have been awesome if he turned out to be the real He4rTL3sS xD…
I’d suggest you start PvPing on the class you’ve played the most (Guardian). I’d also suggest practicing moving while fighting on golems in the Heart of the Mists or on NPCs in PvE. Learn how be moving in any direction while pressing your skills and have dodge bound to something you can hit very quickly. An easy set of keybinds for utilities would be Q,E,R and C for your heal and X for your Elite skill. (It would be much better to start with learning these keybinds than clicking your skills.)
One build that you could start with is: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Meditation_DPS_Variant
This build had a lot of healing and decent condition removals. You can use greatsword, which you already know more about what it does than the other weapons and then scepter/focus doesn’t take long to learn.
Look up Soldier amulet hammer+longbow warrior builds. look for ones with defensive traits (such as 0/0/6/X/X) and uses stances and healing signet.
in my opinion this is the lowest possible skill floor because of it’s very strong passive defenses, allowing you to focus almost purely on playing offensively and strategically.
when you’re running for your life all the time it’s very hard to learn anything about the game. as you learn you will be able to play builds with less passive defense, allowing you to expand your offensive and strategic build options to suit your preferred playstyle.
Ranger, warrior, and guardian are the most basic and easiest to learn.
I used to run the Academy Gaming tournaments for GW2.
If you want to learn a new class, pick Warrior.
If not (I’d say not), stick with Guardian.
Guardian is an extremely strong class but like any competitive game there is strategy involved. You just need to learn it. Don’t feel intimidated or anything by the game as everyone starts somewhere – simply play around with your skills, and if you get wrecked by a really good Guard some day who runs a build you like the look of, why not give him/her a /whisper and ask whether they can give you a bit of advice.
Have fun playing sPvP it’s really a great game mode in an awesome game but make sure not to take it too seriously!
Drunken Alliance [DKAL]
Piken Square [EU]
If Warrior is so easy then people would be hitting their most important stuff at least 70% of the time. Most people who play Warrior right now miss important stuff 24/7 it’s not even funny.
I guess I’d say play Warrior if you wanna learn good habits though.
You do not need to seek another class to get better, just practice on your guardian and it will do you good.
Do some hotjoin, i heard there are bunch of bloodthirsthy mouthbreathing savages lurking in Anets official hotjoin Room 001, hop in and tell them i send you there to seek wisdom. go play wit them, be alert because they will slaughter you continuesly until your brain and muscle function, you will die endlessly but learn from your mistake aswell as your victories. until then you will learn more things about the game mode and your class.
Nahh, just ask them nicely they will heed and give you some superior advice and
they will do you no harm, you have my word.
Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.
Warrior or Guard would be my two recommendations.
If you are going to play PvP i’d just do some simple research on rotations as well as a build. When it comes to the conquest game mode, as long as you are in the right spot at the right time you will be much less of a burden to your team. I can’t recall who made videos on rotations but I think it may have been backpack? If someone could link the video that’d be great.
i would not suggest ranger , it may be easy to pick up at the start but has a very high learning curve when it comes to its extreame flexibility and can become confusing fast with all the combinations they can use, all you’ll end up doing is using some LB build someone posted most likely saying go full zerk gear , playing a ranger requires movement and placement knowledge that you do lack for the pvp setting.
your much more suited to start with a guardain, you already have somewhat an understanding of what does what, just lack the knowledge of when to and how to use skills timely well in pvp.
i agree with the above.
use the bunker build posted above.
Turret Engineer
So basic, people tell you not to play because it is most basic of the most basic.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
Cele engi and Cele Ele are pretty easy to pick up right now..
As is Terrormancer Necro….
If your new to pvp don’t use the terrormancer, it’s slow you get focused and if your not used to watching boons on your opponents you will end up wasting fear on people with stab.
