Will try to summarize it.

1) go for sPvP classes. These are right now: Guardian / Mesmer / Ele / Thief / Engi / Necro. Skip ranger and Warrior – they can be played and they are sometimes devastating but well.. only few people and teams can handle them.

2) Never ever go to hot-join maps. They are only zergfest and they miss any form of tactic. You will only get bad experience there and probably figure out soon that there is nothing to do except to farm glory. If you anyway have to go there, scroll down the browser and find out 5v5 servers. At least less zerging, but mentality of players is same.

3) Get a team. Without team you will get roflstomped badly in most cases. There is no matchmaking at this moment. So its true that you can join it solo and you will face premades, also you can face opponents that spend some serious time in sPvP and they will probably kill you easily as you just start. Unfortunatelly so far there is no training or slow progression.
The only way how to get better is to do it in TEAM. So you need to find one for you.

4) GW2 has great combat and mechanics. dont let anyone to say something else. There are issues of course but speaking about combat, its great. There is also many different levels of gameplay. You will probably not see it now but later you will recognize tactics and strategies that are trully great.

Pick the class you enjoy playing the most, not the class you think is strongest. Try rolling a bunch of different classes and testing them out. My main is a warrior, and i play about 60% of my sPvP on it, but i also rolled mesmer, ele, thief and necro alts to play sPvP as a change of pace.

Once you find what class you like playing, then just look in that class’s forums for builds, its not that difficult to find.

Call me when this game gets fixed…. if it ever does….

A note on hotjoins:
They can be a zergfest, but they can also be a pleasant surprise. You never know. If you can’t find a team hotjoins are imho better than nothing, but don’t let it fool you to think, that they reflect how the game works on smaller scale. It is basically like night and day.

The combat-system does take some time getting used to. Don’t let that discourage you. Have an open mindset and be ready to learn and listen … above all: Explore.

I would most likely also avoid warriors. Not sure about rangers though … maybe I am just dreaming of them being fixed, but … well. I am not sure I would recommend engineer for a new player though. Guardians and to some extend mesmers are what springs to mind to recommend a new player.

for pvp, make sure to check the weapon/armor/item vendors in the mists. the weapon and armor ones sell sigils and runes for armor respectively, that allow you to upgrade/customize further. then the other one sells amulets, which have a couple of stats on it. the amulet u wear is key to your build (ie, berzerkers is a dps amulet, shaman a tanky amulet, etc). soldiers amulet will prolly be your friend early on, as well as a stun break and possibly invulnerability skill to start out.

if you do try out tournies, actively try to take new objectives or hold old ones, versus simply standing with a teammate on a node where there is no fighting happening and hes guarding it

Find a pvp oriented guild or at last a stable group to go tpvp (So you can test a role and improve it, imo it’s better to spec on one class and being good with that than play three without knowing what to do, find a stable place in teams and l2p better and better)…you can also go hotjoin while waiting but it’s all bout zerg there…

i would say my best advice would be to play what you like the most all classes are viable, don’t let any one tell you differently. (some builds however are not) i would start in hot joins and learn the basics of your class. When you feel comfortable do some random hotjoin tpvp to get the feel for 5v5. then when you have done a bunch of those try to team up with some people maybe find a guild and then you can really start to kick kitten and win free tournies. then after that when you are rolling most other free tourny group try some paids for a serious challenge. oh and for where to get builds, look for whoever has some orrian gear in your eart of the mists and ask them they will most likely be able to help you. or add me as a friend and if you aare a thief i can help you with a build

If you don’t know already which profession to play, that would be step 1. Once you have decided, get a feel for the class around the mists. Use all the different weapon sets and just test stuff out.

Next, I would go to your respective profession’s sub-forum and get some advice from people there. Not everyone PvPs there, but many do and some are even well known for being extremely good. They can give you more in-depth tips and advice, as well as a build which is really what you’ll need.

I play Elementalist on Tarnished Coast. If you’re thinking about learning Ele, I can probably help you out at least with getting started and some of the basics. Add me as a friend if you’re interested.

My best advice is analyze everything. If anything kills you, no matter how unfair it seems, don’t conclude that it’s overpowered. If you rule that out, your other option is to study it and see how it works, its strengths and weaknesses. Remember that, environment, positioning, and thought process are all factors. Your effectiveness largely tied to to your understanding of strengths and weaknesses.
Another biggy in tPvP is communication. Communication is critical in team play.
My last biggy for you is awareness, the more alert you are, the better you’re off.

These are all wonderfully constructed opinions and I reinforce every one. Yes, you should play whatever class/build you most enjoy, but keep in mind that the top tPvP teams have a stringent class and build loadout that are seen as viable these days. Practice is necessary if you want to see any sort of progression and the best practice comes with a team. If you’d like to join a PvP guild that runs tournies often and enjoy playing together, PM me your in-game name and I’ll shoot you an invite. Good luck, and have fun

If you want to become a good pvp player…..for god’s sake, stay AWAY from wvsw…tpvp is the only way, hot join just to spend time or learn basics..
