his point is not that they are OP, his idea is to make it so that a team doesn’t need a mesmer just for a portal. Having it as an elite might make you think twice about bring a mesmer, but I still think most teams will use them unless they lost time warp and their huge shatter they have atm.
Im a mesmer and i wish they would just get rid of portal in spvp. It’s a mechanic that is too good not to use.

Disagree, not because of Portal but because of Mass Invisibility. Making MI a non-Elite would force me not to use it, and I much prefer it over our other Elites (personal preference).
Just completely remove the portal and it’s fine. It just gives too much of an advantage and you can’t really win without it (against equally skilled opponents).
Just remove it completely. This is coming from a longtime back point Mesmer. It makes Mesmers the de facto back point guard and pigeonholes the class. It restricts class and strategic diversity and cause problems on future maps. Perhaps change it into a shorter-range teleport similar to shadowstep or something.
as a mesmer i like this idea, or they should just remove portal from spvp or change it to a mesmer only mobility skill.
its overpowered in all types of pvp and it pigeonholes us into side point holder which i don’t think the class was designed for.

If portal is 3000 range away you would come out with 3 seconds daze.

Give Portal to all professions (in different designs of curse), and reduce the duration of Time Warp and Moa Morph to 6 seconds. Fixed.

Making portal PvE only sounds like a good idea. It won’t break mesmers but it will mean they aren’t necessary and thus open up for more playstyles.

As Jimmy said, the idea was not to nerf Mesmers per se (just fix the shatter bug and they’re fine) just make them less required in teams. When one profession is mandatory to succeed, you know there’s a problem.

I don’t really care how ANet handels Portal in PvE. If you/they think it’s fine as is, I don’t have a problem with it. Maybe the skills could be split between PvE and PvP.

Swapping Portal with MI was just a quick idea so Mesmers would still have the same amount of Utility and Elite skills as the other professions.

Actually not making the initial portal last forever would fix everything. Just make it be 15 sec or something. That woud fix both pvp gimmick tactics and pve jump puzzle portal abuse.

I’d like to second this. It’s too awesome to not have for dungeons, and far too necessary for a tournament match.

Wrong again. As his title says it’s about making mesmer’s less mandatory by removing the utility that allows them to be in 2 places at once. The sad thing is that people only have to force a mesmer to use their portal and they generally don’t unless it’s a higher level of skilled players. Force a portal to get the mesmer out of the team fights, or do what smart people do. Load up the portal exit with ground targeted wells/traps/mines and be prepared to blow up the mesmer upon exit. You can see where the portal exit is why not be smart about it?
Your suggestion is more about removing mesmer’s team viability which is ridiculous just in the nature of the suggestion. “Make X class poor for team fights and team support because I haven’t learned how to play against them and I feel they add too much to team fights”
If you are truly wanting people to pick mesmer for some reason OTHER than back point holder then I suggest buffing another aspect of mesmer that allows them to play another role successfully instead of destroying the role they are currently capable of filling.
@wise, literally no other class can play back point as effectively as a Mesmer. If you don’t have a backpoint mesmer you will either be down a person at mid or leave home base undefended. You say all one has to do is force the mesmers portal so they have to go back… You don’t have to do that with any other class.
Removing portal won’t break mesmers viability, timewarp will still be considered the most powerful elite in the game. Shatters are incredibly strong in a teamfight and mesmers would become the best 1v1 class because people could run mirror images or something instead of portal.

It’s not about nerfing Mesmers. It’s the fact that a team HAS to have a Mesmer to do well. They excel at everything. They’re amazing duelists, they provide great team support and utility, and are the best sidepoint holder in the game. They can’t roam as well as most classes, and that’s their only weakness.
I don’t want to nerf Mesmers (fixing shatter bugs is another matter). I’m all for buffing underplayed specs and worthless traits, yet the fact that teams are almost required to have a Mesmer is not good. This goes for any other profession as well.
If you have an idea to make Mesmers less mandatory without breaking the class, by all means, please share it.
Also, this skill is fine in PvE and doesn’t need to be changed. I’m only talking about PvP here.
I would support removing portal from tournaments. Mesmers would still probably be considered mandatory because of timewarp, not to mention they’re already one of the best dueling professions. But at least it would make tournaments more interesting. The (essentially) same composition and strategy for every single map, every single team, is a little…discouraging.
I also agree that making portal an elite would just cause even more teams to run two mesmers.
We know that the devs are capable of disabling certain abilities depending on the environment (underwater, for example). Disable portal in PvP; make portal a PvE-only skill. Done.

Anet wouldn’t remove a skill from pvp. They’d 25/90 it
I actually had a similar conversation with a friend just the other day about how they should make portal an elite (though I suggested removing time warp, since I feel haste shouldn’t be in the game).
We know that the devs are capable of disabling certain abilities depending on the environment (underwater, for example). Disable portal in PvP; make portal a PvE-only skill. Done.

On a side note: May I ask if you have a 12-year old on your team? :P
swap the portal with a signet that adds 25% movement speed and ill be happy to let go of the portal skill
but asking the class that doesn’t have any utility’s that increase movement speed out of combat, to just simply remove there way of fast transport or nerf it. …………….. ^^
how woud you nerf it btw ?
it already has a long recharge , and you need to visit both places to make the jump
( i even think you cant use the portal while enemy around you, or it doesn’t seem to work on mine)
