Arcane Crystals?
I tend to get a lot of arcane crystals from copper chests believe it or not. The better ones are called arcane slivers and they only drop from gold chests.

I’ve salvaged a lot of pvp items and I have never seen ore or any other crafting materials used in pve. Are you sure you got mithril ore from salvaging a pvp item and that it wasn’t just in your inventory?
Winning tournies also gives a good chance of giving you a rare item you can get slivers from.
you also sometimes get pve items from salvaging, its most likely a bug.

This is not true, I got a lot of highest quality items (which can give slivers) in silver chests. I didn’t salvage all, but from the ones I did, I got 3 slivers.

You’re right. I was actually just going off of what the wiki said. I just checked the arcane crystal page (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Arcane_Crystal) and found that it said the following:
“They have chance to be salvaged when using a PvP Salvage Kit on uncommon PvP weapons and armor found in silver reward chests.”
I’m certain I’ve received arcane crystals from copper chests. I’m not sure why the wiki page states that they are found in specific chests, rather than all chests. I suppose I’ll start buying silver chests instead of gold when searching for arcane slivers moving forward.
Well, I don’t know what the deal is, but I could have sworn I’d gotten them more often from salvaging items from chests. Finally did get some slivers from salvaging items I made in the forge though. Still no crystals. I think I give up for now =P
And yes, I’m certain those items were from a salvaged item. I don’t know which item, but a guildy suggested it was probably a hammer [I’m assuming they’ve seen this happen themselves].
There seems to be fairly vague information on what the difference between copper, silver, and gold chests is. The wiki seems to indicate a higher chance to get rarer items in more expensive chests. If this is true, then I can only hope it’s over 5 times greater a chance in gold chests, otherwise I don’t see much point in buying gold over copper. I really wish basic stuff like this was explained in-game.
Also, are crystals/slivers only obtainable from the uncommon/rare (respectively) gear, or can you obtain them from the most common gear?
I defiantly get more orbs then anything else, no matter what chest, this needs to be changed.

Rank 22, almost 23, spent like 70k glory on golden chests … had tons of 1st and 2nd tournaments chests … only ONE sliver so far.
This system is totaly crap. I don’t even bother anymore. I just play for fun with a halfkittenlooking set now
I just bought my first silver chest and got an arcane sliver from it. I wish I tried this before just assuming they only dropped from gold chests, per the wiki page. Oh how much glory I could still have. Oh well. Is there any reason to actually buy gold chests?
Just a quick note on the wiki info, remember it is written by players, not devs. Wiki pages are not “official” and can definitely be inaccurate. I wrote the initial entries on all the PvP crafting materials (including the paragraphs quoted above), based on knowledge of the systems at the time. From my experience and research, silver and gold chests have a higher chance to give items that will salvage into Crystals and Slivers.
Having said that, it is definitely possible (though I’m not sure if intended) that you can salvage those materials from any chest. The problem is, that without a massive amount of data, we don’t actually know what the percentages are like at each tier of chest. My personal experience is that golds gave more rare materials than coppers, however other players have told me that they’ve had good luck with copper chests.
I question whether it’s intended, simply because there are a lot of peculiarities to the PvP salvage system, including:
- Being able to salvage PvE mats from certain items (I’ve had mithril ore, and a few other high-end crafting mats)
- Getting tournament tokens from non-tournament chest gear.
- Getting rank tokens far above your level (tiger tokens from dolyak chest gear)
So right now, it’s hard to say with certainty exactly where the salvage mats are “meant” to come from, we can only go on tested results. However, approaching it logically, you can buy 5 copper chests for the price of 1 gold chest, there needs to be a strong incentive to buy those chests, and if it turns out that copper chests are the most efficient way of farming materials, ANet will most likely change the drop rates, to encourage different spending patterns.
PS. I’ve updated the wiki so that future readers will be aware that silver and gold chests are not the only way to acquire Crystals and Slivers.

rank 22, almost 23, i have only 2slivers
Wow, okay. Those of you in the 20 ranks who have gotten little to no slivers make me feel like I’m actually having amazing luck. I’ve probably had 10-15 so far at rank 12. I seem to have the best luck getting those from salvaging things I crafted in the forge, but I’m still lost as to what happened to the crystals.

And this… So much this. It seems they all give the same kind of items, and the same amount, so I don’t know why anyone would buy the gold ones regularly. It’s not like it tells you if the items are rank #X, so it at least feels like you’re just getting the same stuff. Whether that’s true or not, I think they’d be better off putting less items in copper, more in gold.
