Are leaderboards really just a grind?
That’s not exactly how it works in terms of points, you can get anywhere from -3 to +3 depending on your predicted chance of winning a given match and how many points your team ended up scoring, but yes, it’s just a grind. As long as you don’t lose the vast majority of your matches badly, your leaderboard position is much more a function of how often you play than how skilled you are. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not skilled, either, but there’s no way to tell. Win % has a lot to do with whether you’re playing on a consistent, organized team or not. I know many in the top 100 with win % between 45 and 55%, including myself, and we are all mainly solo queuers, as I have had matches with and against them on a regular basis. On the other hand, there are also many with 66% or better wins-losses, and I have seen very few of those people in my matches, so I assume they’re either in a much higher MMR tier or queueing with a team the majority of the time, possibly both.
ladderboard is for funsies atm, dont tryhard cuz you wont get rewards
justin will have changes coming in for us soon™ to make it tryhard
head here to discuss wvw without fear of infractions
Not really all grind.
You have to win games in order to get points.
Just because you played a thousand games and won only 100 of them, doesn’t mean your going to be top of the leaderboard when a bunch of other people played 300 games and won 175 of them.
Also, determined base on how good the match is set up.
If your having difficult games or close games (mmr wise) you get more points for winning.
If you play at odd hours and have crazy amounts of wins, you only get +1 because your playing at odd hours and avoiding all the competition just to make your win ratio appear good.
No lol.
The leaderboards are awesome. Those at the top are clearly the best players

The leaderboard is ordered by total points awarded based on the outcome of the game relative to its expected outcome. The amount of points you win or lose depends on your chances of winning and the final score. If you were expected to lose but won the match, you get more points than if you were expect to win the match and won. If you were expected to lose and lost, you lose less points. For more details, check the wiki. So basically you can still have a high number of points with less than 50% win rate because you lost matches you should have lost but won matches you should have won – you just played more matches you were expected to lose.
The problem with this leaderboard system is that you have the same point potential regardless of whether you’re one of the best players or one of the worst. As a result, it boils down to who plays the most, not who plays the best.
Win ratio means nothing. Because if you only play with premades its obviously gonna be higher. I remembmer back in yolo Q days, some people barely had 50% W/L. and now they have 70%.
Or some other people its opposite, they had a stupidly high solo Q win rate like 65%( it used to be high back then )and now they barely have 55%.
How can someone with almost a 35% win ratio be in the top 50? It is a grind fest, losing games should never give you points period.

I probably ask why the guy have 35% win ratio. The poor guy keep losing but Anet continue putting him in bad teams against hard opponent.
For solo queuing, I don’t see how there is anyway to determine who should be on top, especially with match manipulation. The only fair way to do it is just put players in to bracket and let them fight to the top. But dont’ look like it’s happening without making queue time longer.
and i only pvp for the reward track, so if they change the system, I’ll be kittened because I dont’ care about ladder but my win ratio.

That’s all the problem actually, it looks like players with 100 wins and 500 loses would be at the same rank spot( if not higher) as someone with 95 wins and 10 loses. If you check leaderboards, you will see than, in average, number of points = number of wins.
You know, i saw several times #1 with 1 win and 4 loses, ending up with no negative points. From this simple exemple, you see there’s a problem somewhere…
I still think it would be helpful having the statistics when the match begins/ends, to understand better…

Right, but I think the leaderboard is the way it is because there is just no way to determine who should deserve it.
Also win/rate doesn’t matter. If anyone solo queuing have an absurdly high/loss rate, it just means match making isn’t doing a good job. Since ideally everyone solo queuing should have 50% win rate. Since that’s what the match making system is suppose to do.
I understand many pvp team are upset they aren’t able to be at top of the ladders. I hope the expansion and new game mode will solve their problem.

But if matchmaking was always spot-on, we would still have an issue with the leaderboards. Picture this scenario:
Top team gets matched against other top teams and win 50% of their matches.
Noob team gets matched against other noob teams and win 50% of their matches.
If both teams have played the same number of matches, they would both be at the same position on the leaderboard with the same number of points.
Wait… what? Isn’t a leaderboard supposed to show where a player stands in terms of skill level in relation to other players?

Yes but it’s complicated to make a 5v5 leaderboard based on solo entry, from this point of view, there will always be something to complain about…
The only problems are that :
- loses aren’t hurting at all : right now #1 has 3 wins 2 loses, ends up with +3 points
- all my wins, whoever the opponent is, are giving me +1 point, but i’m " only" #700…
Except if i am told that i’m only facing beginners, to me, this is only grinding…
