It has gotten steadily worse and worse, and for some reason the Devs are not addressing the core problems in the game. I’ve already pretty much packed my bags and left this game. I’m playing Forge and Dota2 while I wait for Wild Star.

No I am not, the lack of modes is what bores me. I have started playing gw2 with my 5 friends, and they all left months ago, since playing the same thing over and over and over again was not considered fun for them. Can’t blame them, barely log in, usually just check the forum. But now went back to counter – strike, also played a bit of PoE (that is still in beta but has more development than gw2 during all the time is was available for major public), even think of selling this game to get my money back, a thing I have only done with the worst purchase in my life D3…

I have stopped doing sPvP and, to some extent, WvW about 2~3 months ago because the PvP in this game is RIDICULOUSLY boring and stale.

This also means that I haven’t even bothered to try play in the new maps. This is because of my experience that I’ve had so far.

As I mentioned in another thread, the lack of diversity in builds is BORING. When everyone and their mother plays a tank, fights are BORING. When melee is clearly overshadowed by ranged in so many levels, it’s pathetic.

I was playing gw1 pvp earlier last week, and oh my gawd was the nostalgia overwhelming.

Imho, gw2 has failed to epic proportions when it comes to pvp so far.

i have many reservations against SPvP (build diversity, reward system, invisible rating, poor leaderboards, etc), but i found it quite funny at all, especially when playing in group with my friends

I’m about done with my thief, which I played a lot of it while getting through 40+ ranks. I can play other classes, it’s just I prefer my thief so much more and with the constant nerfs, it’s kinda hard to keep playing it. Yeah sPvP is getting pretty boring. Once you play enough of it, you can see the conspicuous trend in class builds. Rarely will you ever see something different, for example, for the first time I saw a scepter/focus elementalist in sPvP yesterday.

  • Warriors most likely roll gs with something else or go burst hammer or full tank.
  • Guardians are often greatsword built with stacking might or going full burst.
  • Engineers are starting to become more common and a lot of them using condition builds, not a lot of 100 nades anymore.
  • Elementalists are typically d/d burst or semi-burst with a little more survivability or s/d burst along with the bunkers.
  • Necromancers are most often condition built although there has been a lot of zerkers not so recently.
  • Mesmers are usually burst, rolling gs/staff + s/x(usually focus or pistol). Sometimes you’ll see confusion stacking builds.
  • Thieves – backstab ofc. d/d or d/p
  • Rangers – well there’s really not too many good rangers in hot joins. A lot of trap built rangers along with a few survivability built rangers. Seldom do you see rangers that are extremely good.

I like the combat and the mechanics of the game but I feel that almost a year of the same pvp with very few maps and very few distinctions between the maps leads to a stale pvp.

I still love pvp, but we’re at the point where X, Y and Z builds are optimal while if you are trying to use A, B or C then you are at a severe disadvantage build-wise.

Balance issues were pivotal in the narrowing of viable builds and perhaps we will see this change now that they have officially stated that they want to further balance pvp skills from pve ones.

While I understand that they want to focus on the conquest version of pvp I feel that it also pigeon-holes viable builds. They wanted to avoid the holy trinity by getting rid of monks but they just created a new one: Bunker, Roamer, Support. All top teams are using those exact roles and any team without one isn’t in the top 50.

There is only so many kiting classes that MMO can take and in this one in particular, they all do the same. Until a pure melee and dangerous Build is possible and we get a true healer spec/weapon, spvp will remain dead. Its not been a year yet and you can see several permanently empty pvp servers. For a pvp oriented game, thats saying a lot.

The term Exploit means nothing in GW2 –

True – PoE is purely pve game made like diablo 2, but even PURE pve dungeon grind game has more things for PVP then gw2: poe has more maps, more modes (1×1 and 3×3), different level tiers (1-28, unlimited), more viable builds per character, not to mention different modes all together like the cut throat mode, that combines pve leveling with pvp. So what does that say about the “AAA pvp game”, “First e-sport mmorpg” gw2?

and now comes the part where you mention they have made close to 0 progress to the pvp part of the game. having a 1v1 game mode or 3v3 means nothing to me. anet could easily make a 3v3 and 1v1 map on short time, dump it on us and then do nothing to improve it for months, what would be the point? also those level tiers are crap, i mean, level 20 vs 28? i’m not even gonna talk about balance and how melee cant do anything in that game.

edit:i’m not saying the game cant be fun for people who like the genre, but you can’t compare what that game needs to succeed with what gw2 needs.

Well last post about poe, since I only mentioned it because that was the game I went to and did not want to compare it to gw2, just a fun game to pvp 1×1 or with few friends and you were the one that started comparing it to gw2, but nvm.

So to fix your errors: melee is actually stronger than ranged in most cases at pvp since things like flicker-strike and stun per hit makes it very hard to kite (and getting frozen through range is very easily countered). Also poe devs added the same thing as gw2 devs added to pvp: few more maps. So minus the leaderboard it is pretty much the same, and we all see how “good” leaderboard is.

Now I can tell what in my opinion is the main thing gw2 needs to succeed:

- More pvp modes (generic ones can be copied from other games: TDM, duels, 2×2, 3×3, CTF, etc.). This would not only increase the amount of players in pvp community, but would also create a vast amount of new builds for characters, since if you do not need to stand in a point to win maybe more people would try new things with professions. Also modes for fewer people would make it a better experience to play if you do not have 4 friends.

After that, if the pvp community gets more and more people it would create a better environment for arena net to get $ from pvp – it may even be a form of a gemstore that sells cosmetics or it may be a paid bracket of previously mentioned modes with prizes for winners. If that takes off anet could turn the attention to the main competitive mode: conquest (why did they choose only this is still a bit mind boggling). From revenues generated via pvp they could launch tournaments with real prizes now, that would attract more attention not only from the increased community of pvp players but maybe even from sponsors. And the scenario (lets call it optimistic) could go further even reaching e-sport, but from the things developed in these 7 months I can say that it is very unlikely this game will get up from this hole any time soon…

Considering it has been almost 8 months since release and there has been little development with the competitive side of PvP, I’m quite upset. They’re still trying to fix/strengthen the core game still, as well as deliver on features promised such as built-in streaming and custom PvP servers. By now, I’d thought we’d be a lot further along with all of this.

Also, the way leaderboards and rating have been set up, I cannot play on alts without potentially tanking my rank because it’s an account-wide rating. They’re trying to make this game like League of Legends as far as rating goes, and I don’t think it’ll work well. I want to feel guilt-free when trying to improve myself in a competitive scene on a different character other than my main and not feel like I’m committing “rank-suicide”. While the PvP side of the game has commonalities with MOBA’s, I think the mentality and connection to characters are much different than what we see in LoL and DOTA. We should feel progression with characters as an individual climb and not as a collective struggle across all characters.

I feel like GW2 does not have a healthy infrastructure to foster a competitive PvP environment. There are no tools to help and encourage casual players to form teams. There is no system to track improvement and growth in skill level (visible ELO rating system must be implemented). Consequently, there is no incentive to PvP. There’s no reason to PvP. That’s the biggest issue.

In League of Legends (largest e-sports game, surpassing SC2), rating is everything. Rating is why you want to keep playing. Rating is why you want to improve and be competitive. Players strive to enter the challenger tier rank in order to be recognized by the community and possibly be recruited into an e-sports team. There is so much incentive to play. Visible rating, separated solo/duo queue with premade team queue. These are all extremely important to the health and future of PvP.

You cannot tailor the PvP infrastructure to the amount of players in the game. “Oh we can’t separate solo queue from premade queue due to lack of players.” That’s not PvP’s problem! That is a marketing/sales problem! As PvP devs, you need to provide the tools necessary to facilitate a competitive e-sports environment. Population is a marketing issue that can be taken care of in their own department.

My guildmates and I, all ranks 40-47 left the game a month ago, due to slow changes and clear lack of vision on developers part.
It feels like this game is coasting on it’s initial hype and enormous success of it’s predecessor however it’s pvp nothing like even a fraction of gw1’s.
I welcome all of you to visit gw1 site, and check out posts from it’s golden age: interviews with guilds, discussions of wining strategies, there was even guild of the week interview, a real ladder with rankings, serious competitive drive, all this even not mentioning public observer, multiple game modes, vast variety of builds and real skill required to master your role in a team..
And what now? they think that minipets and cute quaggans or legendary skins will bring them success and enthusiastic player-base? – this is delusional.
Turns out – “we make games we wanna play ourselves” is a double edged concept, we (the consumer) might not wanna play what you like to play…
Peace,
Volted.

Reason I dont stay is that sPvP needs some more features, I would sign up immediatly for arenas 2v2, 3v3, but will probably never happen.

I just feel like there are better games out there, Im glad GW2 kept me for 6 months but thats the limit, I tried logging on yesterday but I just standed there in the city doing nothing, same which I had with WoW after 4 years, only logging on because of the friends you made.

I’m a casual player. Rolled out from WOW 6 monthes ago. And for me GW2 sPvP is generally ok. Yes I agree 1vs1 duelling mode lacking is not good. But free 5vs5 tournaments are ok for me. The most important for me that the game allowing me to leave for a month or two and then get back and see all my spvp gear is here. GW2 is very friendly to casual people like me not forcing them like wow to earn the gear in weekly arenas and rating battlegrounds 10vs10. I’m not playing for top position in the leaderboard, I just playing spvp for fun when I want it and leave the game for large period of times when I do not what to play. This is very huge + of the GW2.

To me the main thing spvp needs really has nothing to do with class balance.

They just need to add more variety in the maps. They actually have a reasonable amount of maps, it’s just that the main difference between them is just the color of the stairs or ramps you walk up in order to go stand in a circle.

Having one with a treb, another with buffs, another with an orb…that’s not enough.
