Q:

So it’s been several months since launch and I’ve seen comments on several problems (and fewer fixes) such as culling in WvW or “missed” projectiles from moving targets and one pretty big problem the game has is the obstruction bug that arrow projectiles will frequently and consistently face. Running a Hunter’s Shot followed by Rapid Fire spike is frequently a joke because half of your rapid fire will be mysteriously obstructed in an open field. Chasing down a fleeing target and trying to use a pivotal Crippling Shot is infuriating when it is obstructed by air. Seeing your clutch Concussion Shot (which you traited for increased stuns) that would have stopped an important stomp, interrupted a key channel skill or simply kept your target in range of something, become obstructed by air is another unacceptable level of poor programming.

I’ve never once heard or read a developer or ArenaNet comment on this (or even recognise it’s happening). Does anyone know if this is even on the radar? Is it a difficult programming thing they can’t yet deal with (like culling) or is it considered an unimportant issue to dedicate resources to?

Are you joking? It’s a feature that when there is nothing between my target and I, that my arrows will become obstructed? No trees, no rocks, no hills, no walls, just an open field between my bow and my target, the game was intentionally designed that without any visible reason for my arrows to miss, they will be obstructed randomly?

I’ve seen people make the argument that your targets are “Strafing” (moving left and right), and that it’s intended. They claim you should move closer, causing less arrow flight time, to counter the “Strafing”.

This is a very poor argument to me. This isn’t an FPS, where you can claim strafing is a skill, and counter it yourself via skillful play. “Moving closer” is not skillful play. There is no First person view mode in the game to allow manual targeting. There may be some notable exceptions where the weapons projectiles seem to move exceedingly slow by design (Guardian Scepter, Thief Shbow), but outside of those instances, ranged attacks made while in effective range should be unaffected by “Strafing”

If you’re a thief and haven’t
pre-ordered HOT at this point,
save yourself the money and don’t bother.

I was getting this on stationary objects in addition to stationary players. A pot of burning oil in WvW doesn’t move and there’s nothing that blocks things in front of it. I was standing still attacking it and about 40% of my arrows were obstructed. I don’t know why people insist it’s a feature, is it because they don’t play rangers and they enjoy that certain weapons are horribly hindered by this bug?

the obstruction of arrows is really toned down after the velocity increase in the case of ranger.Its practically impossibleto side strafe and avoid arrows in most cases in spvp at least.But it IS a feature.
If you fire an arrow and i teleport/dash out of the way you will miss and the message “obstructed” will appear if im still in rage for you or “out of range” if teleported further than your range.
And that should be the way it should work cause this is not wow!!
Anyway they should change the message to “dodge” or something so that you know why you missed.We already see many rangers spamming 1 why make this kind of gameplay more effective …
(ps: i like ranger but not for the bow gameplay :P)

If someone is strafing and you dont hit error message should be “miss” not “obstructed”.Obstructed means there is something between you and your target causing you to be unable to hit that target.Random “obstructed” messages are a bug ( a very frustrating and imo game breaking bug ) not a feature.

It’s a feature.
Sometimes, arrows can miss, like in real life.
If you miss or it says “obstructed” it’s your fault for not playing the game properly.

Anybody who has played a ranger extensively knows that is not true. I have had a plethora of instances of fighting NPCs/PCs and getting the message randomly without the target or I moving, or anything moving into the path of the projectile.

I never had such issues with my Ranger.

yeah the message is wrong.But im getting “obstructed” when my projectile miss with my warrior and my ele as well.Its not a bug ,its actually a “feature” of the combat system.You can voluntarily test proectile avoidance your sellf and you will see it will always say obstructed and never “miss” which shows up only for melee attacks.
But it does bug out many times due to lag probably.
