Funny enough that you are posting about this. I was actually wondering about this prior to this past week(end), where I registered and participated in the last one, after Olrun posted in these forums soliciting ideas and suggestions about Disconnect Rules. It was quite a lot of fun, but only 11 teams participated leaving five byes for a 16 team tournament. Minimum team limit according to the rules suggests 8; so I am not actually sure if 11 is considered high or low for PugQuest.
Either way though, I endorse the idea of bringing more attention to these tournaments, as well as increased participation.

Never heard of it in my life. Maybe if they did some kind of announcements on said forums people would know about it and MAYBE just maybe take part in it
Never heard of it! thank you for share! i’ll partecipate surely in the pugquest EU this satuarday!

The couple times I’ve participated it was lots of fun. I hope to be able to join again for another weekend or two sometime in the future.
I see following reasons:
- (probably biggest reason) forums are visited only by small portion of the playerbase, the posts about tourneys disappear pretty fast, the tourneys just lack advertisment in game.
- the nature of pugquest can be quite frustrating: the participants range from totally new player to esl winners (last tend to farm this tourney…ahhheeeeeemmmm)…
While organizers try to make balanced teams they obviously don’t really have much info on player skill untill matches started so like in soloq it leads sometimes to quite unbalanced matchmaking which can be discouraging.
For me personally the reason why i rather not participate unless i am absolutely bored is (inb4 Will cameo):
- i can’t use vamp runes which means chances that i get instagibbed by oh so skillful mes burst w/o any tell are pretty high… and i do not enjoy that. Period.

I was recruiting for pug quest this last weekend. While I enjoy the format and the competition, I believe there is a lot of room to improve it.
At this point, we have to start thinking of a legitimate algorithm to garner player skill.
First, there are several players in pugquest that are esl, AG level, and there are many that are not there. This can make for some crazy imbalance skill level teams.
Second, team formation is done by players…players of this game. While I would love to believe there is no bias, I think there needs to be some publication of the team formation methodology to lower the chances of players crying foul.
Third, map choices are huge. If you are having a “entry level” conquest tournament, why is the deathmatch board even a part of the rotation?? You want people to hopefully transition to bigger stages and you are playing maps that do not contribute to that progress.
Fourth, There should just be more publicity about the event overall closer to Friday and Saturday. I spent maybe 30 minutes in the mist talking to folks and got about 5-8 people to sign up for the tournament in that time frame. Most people just didn’t know what it was or it was happening.
Fifth, like AG, I think there needs to be some sort of winners removal from the tournament for a week. While the same teams are obviously not performing together each week, the point is for fun competition. This is a debatable point I believe because 1 person should in theory not carry the conquest team, but I have seen sometimes that it is possible.

I own the Aspect domain and org and do management when they need me to although I try not to get too involved in pugquest, I can probably answer a couple of your questions.
4) The event is run by just a few volunteers and this game doesnt have the audience behind it to justify putting monetary or manpower assets into advertising a 3rd party pvp event. If the volunteers want to advertise it they can but I wont force them to do anything while they’re working for free.
2) Tournament is mainly aimed at fun, not high tier competition. I can assure you there would be very little reason to load teams so friends of friends or w/e could win as the aim of the tournament is not the prize but giving solo players an opportunity to potentially build teams/learn how to play as a team as MM is horrible at doing this.
1) see above
5) Unfortunately I dont agree with doing this. Excluding anyone from a “fun” event makes you the fun police, and they arent very fun.

I’ve been tempted to try it before many times, but I don’t want to kitten people off with my crazy off-meta builds.
Maybe after the expansion hits I’ll give it a go.

Oh hi lasthit! Didn’t know you were active on the official forums!
Good to see your getting it some exposure! Been trying to do the same in the guild.

That’s not it. It really is just because these tourneys have so little exposure. I myself didn’t even know about pugquest until that “disconnect” thread popped up, and even then it didn’t even give a link to the tourney itself. It made no mention of people still being able to join or participate. Complete oversight.

Don’t be afraid! I was playing a home brew mesmer build this past weekend (can be found at: http://intothemists.com/guides/6201-cant_catch_me_gingerbread_mesmer replace decoy with blink), and our team managed to take second place. Last map was courtyard and I think if I remembered to swap leeching sigils for doom sigils, we would have had a good chance at winning it (sooooo many missed stomps because of easy rezzes).
As long as you coordinate with your pug group about what you plan to do and what makes your build work, and if your group is receptive, you should be able to make something work out and have a good time!

And that’s why there were over 100 teams who played in ToL3 in each region right?
