are there any restriction playing pvp without the addon? no new classes? specialisations?

You can’t play the new elites, you can’t get the new heroes for stronghold, and you can’t play revenant (new class). That’s about it.

Core specs aren’t competitive at all.
Balance isn’t that bad, just Thieves and Warriors are out of the meta.

If we wanted to go into game balance, I’d have to take like 30 minutes to write all the stuff out.

I’d say you’ll be fine, they weren’t exactly weak before HoT.

Engi and Ele are perhaps the least touched after HoT. You can still have very good specs for those classes. The issue you will have is understanding how the new elites and Revenant play.

Also, look at the new amulets. Don’t buy them all but there are a couple you will want to purchase. Also the new runes. Only a few of the new runes are really good.

I would focus on learning how to counter DH (LB trap ranger) and Revenant

Yup I agree. Soldier rifle and Cele DD still are serviceable. So you can definately get your feet wet again just fine.

If you played d/d ele you can still compete and to a certain extent burn guardian. Some builds still work if ignored like Pew Pew ranger and PU mesmer. The old warrior builds are better then the new Zerker spec but that doesnt help much.

There are options so good luck and have fun

I’d say burn guard and mantra-interrupt Mesmer would be the best base class builds to use since they don’t gain anything of value to their builds purpose from their elite spec (even having to lose out on meditations or heals or stuns from mantras to make it work) and these builds, especially burn guard, can be effective against the new powerful kitten.

For any other class is advise against running a base class build. Even for ele, tempest is just better than using arcane since you get more sustain and support and pointholding, and fire dd can’t 1v1 DH/rev and win assuming equal skill, whole earth dd just ends up with better pointholding power if it takes tempest instead of arcane.
