Thieves aren’ t OP though, not sure what they added in the recent patch which made them stronger though, care to share?
i think he is talking about the buff to pistol/pistol that nobody uses, or the trait that makes people move faster in stealth which again almost noone uses because the other traits are still more useful.

The stealth trait they “improved” doesn’t even work right, you still move at 33%, not 50%. And I would agree with the pistol traits, they seemed interesting at first, but I would rather stick to playing with P/D and condition damage with venom share.
I’m talking about the 1-second insta-kills before I even realize there is anyone around me. And the ability to solo a Lord + 4 guards via abusing aggro mechanics. And the ability to abuse the culling issue.
The only thieves I can respect and enjoy playing with are ones who aren’t built around stealth most of the time. But since I can’t divine which players these are, I’ll be fine with not playing with any thieves.

They aren’t 1 second insta kills and even if they are, If you have a reaction time slower than one second (we can round it to 600ms assuming you have high ping of about 200ms multiplied by 2 to account for sending the data and receiving it).
Stun breakers are mandatory in this game, not just against thief, if you don’t take at least one and know when to use it and when to save it, you will die to burst in this game.
As far as the lord goes, there is a notification when your base is under attack, so it is quite simple to send someone to counter the thief from killing the lord before they even start attacking him, ignoring it is not the right decision.
I have 2 stun breakers, but I’m not waiting on an attack to press the button, I’m running to get somewhere. There is time between deciding where to go next, noticing you are immobilized, rushing to hit the panic button and if the thief hits their 2 buttons before that, I am dead. And no, you shouldn’t need to be an expert with his finger always over 7 in case a thief is around you at all moments in PvP, that’s crazy. No other class requires that.
Also, stun breakers have 40-45s cooldowns. If yours aren’t available, it’s instant helpless death.
For the Lord: I did run to the base, catching the thief while the door was still up. and doing a bit of damage, but of course stealth + 33% speed means they have no fear of dying, and they raced up to the lord, bypassing guards (as only thieves can) and got to work. I had used immobilize and 2 knockdowns + aoes, and only a couple hit because they were dodged or blocked. I managed to get his health down to a sliver (with practically no help from the NPCs), but he vanished, healed, and resumed until Lord died.
There’s no reasoning that makes this is a sensible behaviour. Until it is made sensible, I’ll choose away from Thief.

You can check Clark for more or less a thousand topics about thieves, and how to go against them. Its pretty much have your stunbreaker always ready, dont go a glass cannon build.
Even game and balance developers said “learn to play”. And its like that because its really not op. Sorry to tell you like that, but its like that.
Who says the devs know what perfectly balanced is? If they did, it would have been balanced from the start. They’re just guessing at numbers and figures, taking feedback from us.
You might ask me what kind of build I use instead of assume I use glass cannon.
The devs also might say I should learn to play the Clock Tower jumping puzzle, which is a multi-hour bad time for me. Instead I learned to choose a better time by not taking part.
You may also want to send an email to the Keep Lords about how to fight thieves, since they seem to be very bad at fighting them.

He’s not complaining guys, just clever use of in game mechanics to balance the game. This thread on the other hand is a good example of a typical Thief QQ thread where it’s a L2Play issue. Good find btw, think I’m gonna use this strat, hope Anet doesn’t nerf it!
I don’t play anymore that way I don’t see any more balance issues ! it’s super effective
I think good thieves are performing “quite ok”. The only issue is, that there are so few of them. Therefore it becomes so hard to see, what their real potential is.
@OP: If you want help, ask for it … this way of asking is not constructive. Plenty of people can/will help you with choosing class/spec so that you can easily kill 99% of the thieves out there.
I’ve resolved to check who is involved in a match as soon as I get in for now on. If there are thieves, I’m just going to go out and try again until I find one without them. I’ll do this until something is done about stealth and their recent OPness is reverted.
It’ll make my gaming experience more fair, enjoyable, and give people an actual drawback to choosing a cheesy playstyle: fewer people willing to play with them.

I don’t blame you mate, I don’t have a problem with thieves, but it is damn frustrating seeing 6+ in every game, no way anyone has enough stun breakers in the world for that. Nowadays it’s more like 6-8 thieves 4 running backstab and the rest stealthing every 3 seconds with p/d and death blossom spam. I just wish so many people didn’t play the class, it’s really forgiving and an easy class to play, so I understand why they do. Well anyways good luck to you mate.
And to everyone one else, it’s not fun playing against 6+ of the same class in one game, and I’m not saying its an only thieves thing, I’ve seen games with multiple classes of other professions than the thief, it’s just he thief ones turn up waay more.
To me hot noon is a time to relax and have fun in between tourneys.

It’s guys like you that got the event jump puzzle nerfed.
The halloween one was SO FUN it took me like half an hour to finish it and like 2 hours to perfect it.
Even when I had the run down 99%, there were the chests to loot on your way up which added a whole new degree of difficulty.
So much fun…
But this disgrace of a Christmas puzzle… I finished it on 2nd try… /no/ sort of enhanced difficulty level for those who have completed it… Nothing. I spent 15 minutes there and I’m done.
Know how many hours I spent on the Halloween Puzzle? Every second while waiting in paid queue.
Ah well… At least there’s the Bell-Hero minigame to kinda make up for it.

All you need is one well-timed CC to kill a thief on Lord. That or just clear the conditions on the Lord as any Necro/Mesmer/Ele easily can.

So you’re saying elementalists can solo a Lord without killing the guards because of the new smoke field. In fact, the smoke field is an underwater ability and won’t work. Even if they did have a smoke field on land, it would have a 10s cooldown at least and 5 NPCs on 1 ele = 5 NPCs on 1 dead ele. Can’t comment about engineers. Mesmers aren’t able to make guards turn around and relax repeatedly in combat with their stealth.
There’s nothing that has made me want to play with thieves in this thread, rather the opposite. It has been a positive change.

If I do what you say I will never get into a tournament – Rangers against Thieves? Instant death.
It’s not always about players NOT knowing “how” to play.

Thief = same base HP as ele but with medium armor. If something is deadly for thief, it’s deadly for ele.
Also, the only reason a stealth thief can bypass the guards is because of rapid stealth, causing them to run to him and return to their positions when he’s cloaked. If they intelligently attacked the location around the lord, it would be balanced.
Edit: I just found an abandoned Foefire map and tried attacking the Lord without touching the guards. I got him to about 90% health.

What is your current class and what sort of build are you using?
I’m not looking for help in beating thieves.
My best achievement was beating 2 thieves at once with no help despite their cheap tactics. Granted they weren’t the best I’ve faced! But it was pretty awesome.
The point is, I don’t enjoy the match when I have to play with invisible people. It’s the same reason I never could get into WvW. The culling was just not a good time. In sPvP, it’s a different source of invisible enemies but also not a good time.

Edit: How Thiefs handles spvp zergzeft then and we see an increase of numbers instead of decrease ? :P
