I went for a descriptive title to facilitate forum searching etc but other considerations were: “they’re always after me lucky charms!” and “I’m sorry Jimmy, grandma took that brownie recipe to her grave”

Ok so basically, in-game and sometimes in the forums people will ask you for your build (especially if you beat them lol), personally I don’t like giving my exact build, here’s why:
It’s my baby! I spent a lot of time fine-tuning it and I feel I’ve earned it. Whether it’s actually any good is beside the point. As far as I’m concerned there’s 2 reasons you duel/pvp etc – 1. To see whose game-awareness/twitch skills are better 2. To see who has created a better build. (of course it never actually decides these things because of class imbalances, luck etc etc but that’s also besides the point)

In short, if you’re giving away your build, then it seriously dilutes the point of playing pvp for me.

Like a build, twitch and general play/game-awareness skills are something that are worked on over time, that you earn through practice if there was some magic mechanism by which you could give all this skill to another player, would you do it? I wouldn’t. Anyone feel the same?

I don’t think it’s right or wrong to want to hide your own build. It’s a personal choice. No one should be angry if someone else wants to release or hide their build. There are reasons for both whether they be making things a mystery, keeping your competitive edge, or bringing up the skill level of the community.

I like to give out my builds in an attempt to help the community. I feel like good builds are hard to come by and so everyone kinda falls into a standard routine. It’s one of the main reasons I hardly play this game anymore.

By sharing your build, you create variety. Which helps make this game tolerable for people like me

I always share my builds freely, just like in DAoC. I have no problem fighting people whose characters are as good as mine. That’s why we’re here, isn’t it?

I had a GREAT fight against a D/D on my Ele, was very close to killing him before others had to get involved and ruined what was a great fight. Afterwards we had a chat and as i have a D/D ele as well i gave him a few tips. Mostly about his “rotation” was a bit strange and was predictable, gave him a few tips for combos and such – RTL into Updraft then Into Shocking Aura (Fury buff) and go to town.

I dont see a problem if they are nice about it, we chatted and he/she seemed like a nice person wasnt abusive or anything like some people i have beaten have been when i have beaten them.

hmmm, thanks for all the responses, i will share from now on – i shouldn’t take myself too seriously. If i can make playing more fun for someone i should – I got beaten consistently yesterday by another ranger in duels, and i didn’t ask for his build so as not to be a hypocrite but i definitely felt the curiosity for the first time, and it sucked realising my build was not optimal, despite all my theorycrafting – at the same time it makes me feel a bit better about not telling people my build in the past XD

Anyway, thanks for the wise words.
