Best MMO PvP
Well The old rose tinted glasses syndrome applies in all things but saying this i think gw2 spvp lacks , thats my opinion , Im an old pvp player from gw1 , and i have given this pvp a good chance , r 41 and double champion titles . I just find it un rewarding in time spent/rewards etc .. but i think everyone knows this so ill stop banging on about it ..
BUT for the current generation of games, I suppose it’ll do.
yes this is accurate, gw2 is the best of the current mmorpg pvp games, and that fact is very sad. luckily i don’t need this kind of pvp, i can play fps games and other single player games. lots of other choices. no reason to play if it’s just the “best of the worst”
@ milo
Welcome to modern economy.
Sad how the quality suffers nowadays. All due to profit. There is not much substantial artistic progression, but maybe us old gamers grew (to some extent) out of gaming too and we have seen the flaws. (I see the flaws in older systems but I think there is some mystique charm to it with the shortcomings it had)
@ OP
This game is good, but it isn’t great. Most competitive players came to this game out of nostalgia and/or having heard of its e-sports marketing. It hasn’t been fulfilled and the standard for competitive games had been set higher over the years. That is how the scene works.
I have seen passion coming from the developers (respect to that), but it doesn’t equal success. Effort and learning out of mistakes equals progression and ultimately success. This game is way more an expression of art than a competitive game.

Not not the best, its average at best. I would put a bet on it won’t survive the next big thing….which is probably going to be Elder Scrolls Online. Frankly its not that good.
I think a lot of people still suffer from the delusion that gw1 was esports.
Gw1 was esports like Jai alai is a mainstream sport.
Truth is there’s more nostalgia then merit, but most people who played gw1 will always say it’s pvp system was better.

well this is flamebait if i ever saw it
when people get nostalgic about gw1, it tends to be about the early campaigns, particularly prophecies. as expansions came out, the quality and community dwindled as i saw it.
so those who came late to gw1 and dont understand, thats why.
Big fan of the action and fluidity of GW2 PvP. I don’t think any MMO has felt better to PvP with. The dodging, the use of 10 – 13 keys rather than 32 like older, clunkier MMOs, etc. It just plays super smooth. It’s great.
Now, I prefer the super cutthroat nature of something like Asheron’s Call (Darktide Server) for the PvP setting, where it’s gank or be ganked and you’re always looking over your shoulder, and dying has consequences. Also, no single PvP map in GW2 has come close to the Hutball map from SWTOR (best single PvP map ever, too bad the PvP mechanics of the game were lacking. If they’d added more Hutball maps and made it a separate form of PvP, I’d probably still be in).
Anyway, no open world PvP makes me sad, but the way the actual PvP mechanics and the action happens in GW2 is simply superb, and I can’t overstate that. Thanks ANET team, for the super fluid gameplay. …now get to work on giving me Hutball.

I like it too, and also we don’t have to deal with the trinity BS.
Trinity is crap.
But it is easy to make a playable game with it.
Anet tossed that, which gives tons more potential for the game, but lo-and-behold they ended up being terrible at the process and created some monstrosity a few times worse than anything the trinity could sbit out.
Tragic, probly gonna shut up good progress in American MMOs for a bit too, since people now think ‘new is bad since GW2 tried new but its bad’…
They had such a fantastic shot at reinventing the genre… but they blew it…

Gw2 gameplay with gw1 skills would be nice

Gw1 PvP was superior in everyway. I don’t know if you ever played Gw1, but as an x GW1 top player I can tell you that Gw1 was the best PvP I’ve ever experienced in an MMO. I still know a lot of people that still play Gw1 just because of the PvP. I don’t think you ever played Gw1, because you wouldn’t be saying that.

I wouldn’t really call it nostalgia. MMO players are willing to give new games a fair shot, to the point that they just go from game to game.
I think what happens instead, is that players enjoy the game until they read the forums, and the forum negativity infects them. Like had they never touched the forums they’d still be enjoying themselves, but because they do they grow increasingly bitter.
And that’s not really a dev problem. Nothing the developers do, change, or add will fix that overwhelming negativity. It hit nearly every MMO to come out in the past ten years. It’s something we have to fix on an individual basis, I think. Mindsets need to change, and people have to ask themselves whether or not they’re enjoying the game before they let silly things like balance and lack of secondary esports features ruin that experience for them.
The good thing GW2 has going for it is because there’s no subscription, it’s easy to just come back later. There isn’t this overly dramatic “quitting the game” or “leaving the game” thing here. GW2’s like any non-MMO video game that you aren’t playing. You didn’t quit it or leave it, it’s just sitting on your shelf until you play it again. Maybe people need to take some time away, go mess with the next in a long line of games that’s being hyped to fix all the PvP problems, experience that disappointment and negativity yet again, and then come back to good ol’ GW2.
This game does more things right than wrong. Hate that you guys just refuse to see that.
Priorities, what to do?
Spend hours with dye
Everquest next coming soon. Maybe PvP will be better there !

Truth.
Hi all, I keep seeing this, and similar arguments crop up. I don’t really disagree with them but I have some thoughts I’d like to share.
1) GW2 launched with better support for pvp than most MMOs. This… is… true, Im pretty sure. But it also launched with a lot less than guild wars 1 did, and a lot less than it was hyped to contain. I guess it’s a glass half full or empty kinda thing.
This first sentence just isn’t true. I can think of at least 1 recent game that trumps GW2 in PvP support that I personally played and could be considered recent. The comparison would be embarrassing. The level of support at launch would have been more than adequate if patches were delivered quickly, and tested well prior to launch. They weren’t, so it wasn’t.
2) Best PvP of an MMO… I’m not sure about this but it wouldnt surprise me. It just hasnt got the best PvP of any mmo ever. GW1 had better tpvp before anet expanded it into bad, and DAoC had Realm vs Realm, which was a lot better than WvWvW. So again, half empty half full.
Best is a nebulous term, but GW2’s core is certainly strong. I think the only reason so many of us continue to care about the direction of PvP is because we can see how amazing this game could be if only all the peripheral kitten was handled well. The basic gameplay is fun to play, well designed, interesting, and unique. Unfortunately all the crap around the basic gameplay (Matchmaking, Leaderboards, rewards, balance, QoL functions, etc) has been less than adequate, poorly tested, and very slow to release.
pre-ordered HOT at this point,
save yourself the money and don’t bother.

i feel like everyone that like guild wars 1 PvP was someone a top player on this forum. And supposedly being a top player in a previous game is suppose to give some credence to their statement, which ultimately doesn’t.

silvermember, Did you played GW1? Because all you GW2 fan boys talk kitten about GW1 and you never really played it. So how the kitten can you really give an opinion without experiencing both games? You probably were 10 years old when Gw1 came out.

It gives more credit to someone who has played at a high caliber and who obviously would have given GW2 an equal shot as GW1 more credit than persay a random PvEr that has no clue about GW1 high-end mechanics/play but all of a sudden says GW2 is the best thing ever.

Wish I could have seen in sooner, but the game just gets worse and worse. My apologies for ever defending it Motoko—you were right back in the early threads when I used to defend this joke of a pvp blindly.

This pvp is a joke compared to WoW, but it’s still entertaining.

Actually, I did play guild wars 1, is just that I am not completely ignorant of its flaws or I choose not to ignore its flaws, like others seem to be. I just don’t let tinted glasses get in the way of my thinking. My experience with PvP wasn’t too positive as a result of the wall created by players which made new or casual pvpers, non existent, take that for whatever it means to you.
with that said, I am not particularly a guild wars 2 fan either, I play this game simply because there is nothing better atm (EQN I haven’t played, blade and soul CN stuck in CBT, Wildstar and ESO, I have played one of them and it makes me appreciative of gw2), so i m stuck here, but I digress.
The point is that except for elementalst current standing, I don’t blindly complain. I try to be rational and realistic, that might come across as fanboy to someone whose opinion’s differ from mine.
