What do you think? I always play with no teamies, and just go into random sPVP games.

I originally was a mesmer, but tried necro( d/d power) warrior(bursty) and ele (d/d burst).

I basically copied QT’s builds for each with great success.

Best scoring games were on ele and mesmer.

I do not like guardians simply because they aren’t that good at burst, and I don’t want to play super defense.

Don’t say thief…I hate them.

Of course, THE best profession for “scoring high” in hotjoin is the one you hate, which is one reason why there’s so many of them. Apart from that:

—A mobile ele build will get you a lot of points because you’ll tag a lot of people and be in every fight
—A mesmer will get you a lot of points because it’s hard for players below rank ~10 to fight against them

Those are probably the second and third best “scoring” professions. Although, if I might give my own personal opinion, playing tournaments might be much more enjoyable for you. You don’t have to have a team, just submit your roster and you’ll be put in a pick-up group.

Thief is also good.

High mobility: Thieves have tons of teleports/speed buffs meaning you can get from point to point quickly (your objective in hotjoin is to neutralize/cap as many points as possible and not worry about holding)

High damage: Thieves have the highest burst in the game. They can kill most targets in 2-3 seconds which saves time (it can take other professions over 30 seconds to kill someone in a 1v1). It’s extremely important not to get bogged down in fights in hotjoin

High survivability: Stealth/teleports means that thieves can disengage from fights with ease. They are extremely difficult to kill, especially if you don’t have much CC

You know, the thief build. In fairness, the OP did say he didn’t want to play a thief, so this thread is basically about the other good builds for “scoring.”

If for best class you mean those that are better at getting points the answer is the ones with good mobility. Guardian can do good dps while having also good mobility. Necromancer is good, when I used to do hotjoins with my necro I was ending top score and by far but for this purpose I think Scepter/dagger is better than DD and I would change one of the utilities to Spectral walk to move fast between bases since capping bases is what will give you most of the points in many cases. It’s not fun at all but if the purpose is to farm glory, running from base to base + aoe damage is the best.
So pick a class that does good aoe damage and has good access to swiftness and/or other abilities to move fast.

PS: This is ofc for hotjoins. If you go for free tournaments please don’t do that.

Well if you want scoring I’d stick to necro (condition) – aoe attacks give you more points when enemies die, since you “tagged” all of them in point fight. I get ~300-400 points a match, but only play 5×5 you can probably reach more if you can bare 8×8.

Why hate thieves? They are probably my favorite enemies, especially ones that read in the forum how OP that class is and in reality have no idea what they are doing, just start pressing hs and do no dmg – free frags : )

I usually judge what class is best by the points I get at the end of each game.

Eles were nice because of mobility, allowing me to get really high points. Mesmer was because I just nuked people. I do see thieves scoring #1 alot. I may try the condition necro out…

I guess I should ask what character do you think is the best to handle 1v1s while having mobility overall.

I like the idea of the necro, might change him to condition and tag people up. After tasting d/d ele mobility..makes other classes feel slow lol

I main a guardian and average around 250 score per game assuming teams are even, but for hot-join I would say thief is the best. I can get 350-400 points every game just running around insta-gibbing people and capping points. Stealth and movement speed prevent you from being killed and the insane dps means even if another player is already downed you can just tag them a few times and reach the damage req to get a kill +skirmisher/defender etc. Trap rangers are also really good and should allow you to get a score around 250-300 average with little effort. Haven’t tried d/d ele yet so I can’t comment on that.

Try a trap Ranger. I was with a guy in a few hotjoins yesterday who was trying out the Ranger for the first time in PvP and he could NOT stop posting in /team about how much fun he was having and how amazing the class/spec was. In a 2v2 bout I just sat out the way and watched him own the zone. He was giddy.

Well generally you want something that offers dashes and/or swiftness to help you move around for a high scoring type of build. AoE attacks are also pretty useful since they allow you to tag everything and can sway team fights in your favor as well so you can even get those points.

Most of the above options are certainly good, but I’d totally suggest an Engineer with Bombs and Grenades in a Power/Condition hybrid. Most people in hot-join don’t understand the concept of staying out of the Bomb explosions and it makes the fights really easy. It offers AoE damage at 1500 range and has a fair chunk of Swiftness – not the most mobile though compared to most Engineer builds.

Beats most of the flavor of the month builds as long as you see them coming. Confusion and Blind gives you the kit to outplay opponents. It does lack a stun break though, so it has less reactionary options then you may like.

If you are just in for glory farmming, then you should try the glass cannon rifle warrior build (mobile and solo). Although not recommended for tPvP, this thing hits like a truck in sPvP. And since you are traiting for bullet penetration, you don’t need to worry about doing AoE damage (+Fire Sigil, gg tango down).

Now playing it, never,EVER go in the front line or fight 1×1 (unless against other glasscannons)! Your job is to take people down as fast as possible and then move to another position.If possible, capp one undefended point for +glory. And if things get a little warmed up to your side, just switch to S/H and run for your life.

For maps: every map has at least, 1 particularly good spot for sniping (your best being Khylo)

Khylo: just stay upon the clock tower, killing any kitten who dares to come closer.
Foefire: Not really good for sniping. Your best spot there are those two pillars in the graveyard. If getting focused, just jump on the hill beside it and stay out of sight.
Niff: Keep, nuff said.
Capricorn: Dock and beach on the upper grounds.
Temple of Storm: Now this one is pretty decent, you have acess to the high grounds in all three points.

i have played pretty much everything in hot join except guardian, and mesmer is by far the best imo if your sole goal is farming honor. Running a phantasm build (google taugrim legion build – although i dont use that exact build) you can hang around the back lines and just throw your phantasms out for damage. If you see someone downed you can just throw a GS phantasm at them and let them hack away while you focus elsewhere and still get kill credit. you can also escape any zerg fight if youre team starts losing with decoy and blink and go cap a node or wait for reinforcements. also with sword 2 you can survive some heavy focus.

imo thief is too squishy, same with GS warrior. warrior also lacks condi removal and escapability. ranger i just find boring and i dont like following the d/d ele crowed, theres like 6+ d/d eles in every hot join match now. engi’s not bad but nade aoe is small radius and you still lack escapability compared to a mesmer.

I dont like thief’s either on principle but… they are good for hotjoin.
especially for noobs.
very simple to use and very hard to mess up the build.
That said when all the players are good they come out about the same as anything else.
its just… Its easier to use and so feels like less work… so its more fun. IMHO.

Mesmer requires more skill and more knowledge of the class.
thief was effective for me just using heartseeker and stealth. Not even knowing what the other buttons do.

Ele requires skills and muscle memory.
a lot of its abilities are tied together and missing a button will screw up failure sensitive chains.

Most of the classes are like that.

Plus playing a thief will hone anti-thief skills. its well worth it even if deleted after 50 games.
But the end result is that for me… thief is less frustrating to play.

Keep in mind that an elementalist, in addition to high mobility, has plenty of aoe. That means that if you join any zerg, chances are,you’ll get credit for all/ most of the kills. Eles also have excellent defensive builds which allows them to survive in groups, buying time for your party members to finish off your opponents.

I sometimes use a staff elementalist to farm glory in spvp. Basically, you apply swiftness to yourself to move between points quickly, have strong defense to survive duels (staff is not very good at killing in duels), and go where the zergs are, spamming meteor showers and other fields. You’ll make your party stronger with combo fields, crowd control up to 2-3 opposing players at the same time, and get kill credits for all foes that were hit by your fields, even if it’s a backstab thief or someone else who kills them/ deals the most damage to them.

They’re most likely referring to the standard Backstab burst build. Here’s a general template for the setup (copy/paste):

Equipment, traits and utilities will of course vary with preference, but the general idea is always the same – pump out the highest numbers you can in teamfights with SB, gank unsuspecting solo targets or those fighting your allies with the infamous Steal+CnD+BS combo, and clean up anything that’s left with HS.

In reply to the topic, I’d agree with everyone else that anything with good AoE damage and high mobility is what you’re looking for for glory farming. Trap Rangers, Well Necros, BS Thieves, and most styles of Mesmer/Ele are going to be safe bets for you. Warriors have good mobility but generally lack in the AoE department, since most of their skills that can hit multiple targets have a relatively small radius. You can achieve good results with them, but you’ll have to work harder than you would with other classes. For Engi, things like the Bomb kit can be your friend for AoE damage, though surprisingly, I’ve found that the Engi’s tank builds are also decent for getting high scores (250+), since you have high mobility (Speedy Kits) and can tie up a lot of players until your allies can help, meaning you end up getting consistent kill credit. For Guardian, a GS build would be your best bet, since it has the most consistent AoE damage and mobility. You could try to leech kill credit with a Staff, but you’re unlikely to be killing anything on your own with most Staff builds. Hammer is the Guardian’s other primary AoE weapon, but it doesn’t offer any mobility and has a slower killing speed, so it’ll be harder to compete with other high-scoring classes.

the thief build i was using initially was just out of the box. no changes other than to use dagger mainhand which i think was default.

generally i find i get good points just roaming from point to point and avoiding hotspot points or style crampers like “the ruins”, “the graveyard”, “the gate” and “the keep”

I think the ele is better in WvW then hotjoin. Its abilities seem to mesh there better. I think the lack of HP makes the ele a bit dangerous to use in hotjoin where one good burst landing will do them in. In wvw that does not seem to matter as much as being able to mistform into keeps and such.

burst damage on the ele is low in comparison to thief or 100b.

mesmer is a good hotjoin class too as the sheer number of targets and target loss will confuse the living kitten out of noobs and frustrate moderate players.

Both power and condition necros are extremely awesome, and in my opinion, fun builds. Between wells (power) and epidemic (condi) you can through out sick damage and make a huge difference in team fights. You won’t have the best mobility in the game but for hotjoin I find both builds viable and even successful in 1v1, 2v1, and 3v1. All is based on the skill of the necro and who he is fighting, but with deathshround and plague form I find myself outlasting other players far less often than getting group spiked like i do with so many other professions.

Sorry but I just find this funny. I have less issues with thief on my Scepter/Dagger + staff necro than any other profession in the game. With enlarged marks you have to have dead reflexes to NOT catch stealthed thieves and have so much aoe that whether or not im power or condi I end up finding a downed thief when his stealth timer is up. Not to say that good thieves can’t be the bane of a necro, but i think it is a travesty to say thieves were made to gank us. Between Deathshroud, marks, plague form, and mobility/kiting (yes necros have great strategic mobility) you should be able to handle the skills of 90% of hotjoin thieves
