Best class for when put on losing team ?
For TPvP…
Offensive ele or thief.
Ele’s, well played eles, (typically s/d cantrips) can win 1v2s against mediocre players pretty easily.
Thieves can run into a losing fight and just burst down enemy after enemy without much trouble (short of fighting good players).
Both setups are extremely survivable, mobile and can dish out allot of harm in combat.
SPvP…
Fighting a zerg, winning against a zerg with a single class is painfully tough…
Warriors are decent at it with endure pain and the stability on being CC’d trait giving them next to free reighn on enemies for 6~ seconds.
Mesmers are solid just because the average pug is bad at telling the difference between the mes and clones, condition dmg mesmers are utter pains to kill and deal decent dmg all the while.

I think it’s obvious by the class population in hotjoin, but thieves excel at stealthing past zergs, capping unmanned points, and bursting unskilled stragglers.

I would say condition thief. I run a P/D and shortbow with caltrops and can cap points insanely fast. Almost never die nowdays, had a 4 hour sPVP session last week with like 1 death. It’s SOOO much better than buirst builds.

I wonder what your average point score was in that session.
I finds that when I am placed on a weak team where the other side is zerging and getting scores like 290, 280,250. . .
…that by running around capping I get only about 7 caps or so before it’s over, for about 100 points.
I hope that when they revise the scoring for sPvP (as they said they are going to do) that they make the scoring less for zerg-related activity and more for defending and taking points, and killing trebuches.

You have to play sneakily. Flank the zerg and burst 1 down before the rest notice. Then move onto capping the node.
I almost always top the highest even on the losing (non-zerging) side.

I think the best option is going with a semi bunker guard running soldier amulet, shouts w/ convert condi to boon trait and offensive weapons like 2hd sword/scepter focus. This type of spec decimates the glass cannon builds that run around in hotjoins. Since you can handle 2v1/3v1 for a decent period of time you can last long enough against unfavorable odds for your allies to hopefully come to assist you.
Thieves. You can go camp their spawn and still get points. Or run around the map taking unguarded points.
Anet lied (where’s the Manifesto now?)
I don’t understand why people are saying Thieves when he mentions “skillful play.” Backstab Thief is the best class to pub stomp in sPvP yeah, but that’s because of the low skill-cap of the Thief class (D/D burst in particular).
In 8v8 hotjoin it is hard to say. If your team is scattered you’ll likely only get an engagement when you inadverently run into the zerg. Kind of want to say Necromancer, due to how good their AOE damage is. Their movement is incredibly slow though, so you’ll likely die whenever you are outnumbered, even if your build is bulky.
Otherwise Thief/Elementalist due to their ability to roam around the map easily. Thief moreso since it escaping from engagements/roaming is incredibly easy with stealth and Infiltrator arrow.
Many people mentioned thieves being extremely good in SPVP.
But frankly in SPVP, as a trap bunker ranger, I rarely lose to a thief in 1 on 1 scenario , especially in a position of defending a cap point.
They can only stand a chance when their spinning elite is ready, but still, I have a high chance of defeating thief in 1 vs 1 scenario
It’s like most melee classes post minor threat to ranger in SPVP. (Only hammer guardian can be troublesome sometimes)
That being said, mesmer is the class that post biggest threat to me in SPVP.
The never ending conditions and never ending illusions summoning (waste my traps) really causes me major trouble when I try to take down them.
Sometimes if they’re skillful enough, I almost always lose to them in 1 v 1 when he’s fighting in defend position. (standing at a point guarding that point alone)
Guess one class beats another…
