Increased population should = better matchmaking.
But nope, this latest beta just highlighted again why matchmaking sucks.
Getting match with people brand new to PvP?
Getting match vs enemies of such varying skill in the same match? Where 1 guy does not even do more than auto attack and constant dodge until he cant anymore and then dies, while another guy is far better than me or any one person in my team?
Most of them I are not even premade, just getting matched with new players, period.
Seriously something being done wrong with it and its pushing me from this game.
EDIT : Suggestion : if the new players had their own “buffer” MMR before being introduced into the existing player pool, this would be alleviated many issues.

Actually increased population would initially mean WORSE matchmaking, due to the new players not having any indications of how good or bad they are, and are thus just put into matches totally blind.

However a good matchmaking system will compensate for that by gradually “adding” them to the existing pool of players. This obviously is not the case though.
Stronghold may have attracted a bunch of WvW players, which have varying skill levels across a wide range. Some being incredibly good, while others being standard zerg fodder. The matchmaker will have no way to determine the difference off the bat. This should settle down later on. And, does Stronghold have its own MMR, separate from conquest? I would be surprised if it does not…

Wrong. Hearthstone, the whole game revolving around a matchmaking mechanism does the same kitten like Gw2’s matchmake system. My first few games were excruciating. I had just the base deck of cards (didn’t even bother to make a custom deck because i didn’t know it is an option) and I was being matched with wallet warriors for over 10 games. (full of legendary cards)
Matchmaking systems that make everyone happy are impossible. There is NO example of a working matchmaking that makes everyone happy. None!
… unless the matchmaking also implements leagues/tiers (E.g. League of Legends). This way, the better you get, the better opponents you get. Once you reach your top level based on player skill, you’ll only play with people in a similar league/tier. Regardless of how poor the matchmake is, playing with people from only your league is going to make the matches fun.
However, I don’t see how could this be implemented in Gw2 unless it goes completely F2P and advertises heavily on PvP.
Maybe some basic implementation is possible with 3-4 tiers but you kinda need a critical mass of people.
And on top of all this – people get annoyed when facing the same opponent over and over and over again. Sadly, if they implement leagues/tiers, the high end players will pretty much play almost exclusively with each other all the time.
Another thing is queue time. With leagues/tiers the queue times for the better PvPers will skyrocket because there aren’t that many good players.
Which might bring the abusive lowering of personal skill level (e.g. losing games on purpose) just so these people could fight and skip the queue time on higher tier…which would certainly kitten off people like the OP.
So you see, regardless of how much it frustrates you, there aren’t that many options to begin with. Also instead of just complaining, try offering a solution. Who knows, maybe the devs will turn it into CDI if it sounds legit.

LoL does matchmaking better than any game I have ever played even if you don’t consider the difficult to implement League system(because it requires a large player base), new players will always be in the same “MMR bracket” although that is not quite the way it works.
Veteran moba players or smurfs will very quickly promote out of this invisible tier and legimate new players will stay there for quite some time.
This sort of implementation is relatively simple to implement in comparison and is a must for a growing PvP community.

Let’s not have LoL’s MMR’s system…
1 ) Encourages win streaks to promote your self out of the bottom 90%
1 A ) The promotion of rage quitting since there is no punishment system atm
1 B ) Toxicity levels within the community will nearly triple for new players who make even the tiniest of mistakes.
2 ) LoLs system is done on a team ranking not a solo ranking. This would work in a Team Queue situation of say 5v5 premades; however, this will not work very well in a solo queue situation since your team mates are constantly changing and their MMR will vary. LoLs #1 flaw in their formula is the time spent in queue. The way LoL is set up, the formula would rather get you into a game quickly then finish putting you in an ideal match up that “favors a 50/50 chance of winning”.
I would even go as far as to state that LoL has more threads complaining about their system then GW2’s by 2-3 folds.
GW2’s system does need to be refined a lot more, but LoLs system is not one to emulate…. especially with GW2 mechanics and rewards in mind.
OP made valid points.
on a positive note for stronghold, I didn’t mind:
conquest had longer queues and familiar names
I’m pretty sure they’ve lowered the criteria for this beta weekend in order to get decent q pops.
I’ve had 2 unranked q-pops for stronghold (<1 min). Twice full team against full solo.

There is nothing wrong with LoL’s or GW2’s matchmaking systems.
The problem with LoL is that 90% of the community thinks they’re better than they actually are or deserve to be higher, when in reality they are exactly where they should be. ‘Elo Hell’ is a copout for being bad.
I’m platinum is league and I rarely EVER get placed with someone that doesn’t belong on my level, strictly solo/duo queuing.
Also, complaining about GW2’s matchmaking is dumb, there is nothing to base matchmaking off of. If you want a guaranteed good team, create a premade with good players. It would be like solo queuing for a BG in WoW and complaining your team sucks and the other team is good… it’s always going to be completely random unless you premade, nothing new here. Why do scrubs bring this kitten up all the godkitten time.

1 A). You are confusing the League system for ranked play vs the MMR based matchmaking of normal unranked games.
1. No punishment? Don’t know when last you played but its quite strict and punishing for both leavers and toxicity in the last ~year.
1 C). To some extent, but if the new players had their own “buffer” MMR before being introduced into the existing player pool, this would be alleviated. This is already done in LoL for some time, but the toxicity is perpetuated to badly now, so a good punishment system was required and is now implemented for a few months.
2. Not true for team ranking, you can check individual MMR while you are in match via LoLNexus and the MMR rating rarely differ largely.
2-3 fold more complaints but a community 1000 times as large. Do I need to say more?
I am not saying it needs to be emulated, even considering your knowledge of it is limited, I just said it was the best example of a working system.

“Also, complaining about GW2’s matchmaking is dumb, there is nothing to base matchmaking off of.”
Yes and its part of the PROBLEM that CAN and should be fixed.
“If you want a guaranteed good team, create a premade with good players.”
Not a solution for some. Nor should it be justification.
“it’s always going to be completely random unless you premade, nothing new here.”
Its not, and it should not be.
“Why do scrubs bring this kitten up all the godkitten time.”
How nice. Thanks for confirming that I can ignore you.
My complaint about GW2 matchmaking is that it takes 7+ minutes to come up with a poor match. If the matches are going to suck anyway, it could at least start the games faster.
