This is the part of the reasoning behind locking profession. The other is to avoid Build Wars 2 and lower the amount secret knowledge that only experienced players know.
Build wars 2. I get the stigma behind this. There have been periods where builds have shut entire classes out of the meta. Hard counters are bad, however soft counters can limit class abuse, although high level balance, and the community, has never reached that level of sophistication.
The truth is this however. The meta has been ‘the strongest 1v1 class with incremental sustain mechanics’ since launch. The attitude of restricting counter builds/comps only further entrenches the meta here, because the above approach to team comp requires very specific builds to ‘counter’ what it deems ‘best’ 1v1 bunker. These builds run a much, much higher risk of being countered themselves…
My question is this; why are you punishing multiclass players; people with the capability and desire to run outlying, higher-risk comps.
If class countering is unintended (and punishable by hard loss), why do class counters exist? I could put together 10 changes inside 15 minutes that would fix it if it really isn’t intentional……. but I always assumed it was…..

hmmm i thought the point of gw2 pvp was that you could make any type of character you want and if done right it could be viable in pvp. The best part of guild wars pvp to me was suppose to be i could come up with a unique build and it could be a little different and still compete at the highest levels. A little sad to hear that ……
question? Why is the game meant for people to walk in and say i can compete with someone whos been playing for 2 years whos tried making there traits and build perfect for there play style?
if u try and balance the game around 1v1’s, you will get build wars. case and point: celestial meta, and all the other stupid metas before that. in the cele meta, no one has a clear role. every cele specced prof does everything. same thing happened with d/d eles on release, hambows after than, petting zoo (now replaced by turret spam), etc.
..the alternative presented to us is to only run ‘safe’ meta builds currently though(cele engi, Ele, thief however this one is still subject to comp in solo q); anything situational will risk you being ‘locked in’ to a bad matchup….

That’s the problem. Derestricting profession swapping alone wont solve this, however it will at least allow players to queue solo with builds that run the risk of being counter comped by safer choices, and allow teams to adapt to the very specific requirements of countering ‘the’ meta comp; without risking getting rolled by other things……
I think they want to lower the hurdle for new players to get into pvp .
But their way of doing this is just wrong .
Before the last Pvp-update you could easily figure out if ppl in your team to have knowledge of their profession, just because the good ones swapped weapons for buffing in the beginning – which is not possible anymore .
And for the inital statement about buildwars2, I was also to “rage” about that statement without further explaination from Justin.
This ( and the current mechanics behind the leaderboard + stuff that come with it ) just leaves us with the impression that PvP designers of GW2 don’t understand the issues.
There are many many posts in the PvP forum, also posts with great suggestions on how it should be done but they are ignored .
This is an important point which should be replied to by anet staff
It isn’t class countering; its build countering. Meta builds show up when an already known build is altered slightly, but does not have the hard counters of the traditional build. Hard counters do come from class mechanics limiting what a class can do. For example, thieves having limited condi cleanse or necro lacking stability. If no one had a hard counter it would probably be like watching two 5-man dd eles fighting each other.
If every build had at worse a 40/60% chance against every other build 1v1 while playing optimally at top end of play. I think it would be balanced enough for the 5v5 the game type, builds would be less of a factor, and we’d achieve true balance and even open the door for 1v1s, 2v2s, 3v3s to be part of the official format. =D
To bad A-net has no desire to strive for such… These fluctuating metas are fine for games like Dota and LoL, however it’s clear we are not a moba.
But ppl forget chess the properly balanced 1v1 game has been around for a LONG time without any patches, and is officially considered a sport by the “International Olympic Committee” <- direction GW2 needs to go.

….just to continue this forum tantrum…
I don’t want to play mesmer versus a good thief
I don’t want to play guard versus double Ele comps
I don’t want to play warrior versus a mes/teef comp
i don’t want to play double thief
Etc etc…
So now if the circumstance arises we have to just take the spanking. Never mind the fact people may have learnt whole different classes precisely so they won’t get caught out like this….
I think that’s the point though.. no matter how unfair people think rerolling to counter comp is, it’s much much worse when you’re the one being countered, and are unable to reroll to solve the issue; even if you’re more than capable of doing so!

I actually think that its a good idea to lock professions.
But I then dont think it is a good idea at all because it punishes pugs/solo more than premades. Which sucks.
When you queue solo and there are 4 thieves you should not be punished for rerollin something not thief
