For a change I got on my old Minion Mancer and did some Unranked matches.

Interestingly, a lot of people did not seem to know how to deal with it. I guess they never see a MM any more.

I had a player “/laugh” at me. But I was 1v2ing a lot and holding my own extremely well.

And I enjoyed playing it. Played properly, I think it can fulfill a role very well. It’ll never be a Cele Ellie, but it can 1v1 well against a non-AOE class.

problem is you just have to sit home all day and leave your team 4v5. youre way too slow to try run decaps, and youre useless in a team fight due to all the aoe spam.

so it can work well yes, but the higher level of play you reach the less and less and less it work.

Lol, just play what you enjoy and ignore the haters. If you get good at it, people will eventually be saying stuff like “Wow, you’re pretty good for a minion master.” It’s not like you’ll play something you don’t enjoy to its full potential, anyways, right?

If you play something you don’t enjoy, you won’t be motivated to stick with it and get good at it, so don’t bother with it. Also, if minion masters were really as terrible as everyone makes them out to be, you wouldn’t enjoy playing it because you’d just be getting endlessly crushed without being able to benefit your team at all.

Sure, it might not be the best, most optimized build for conquest with every team matchup in the game, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good for anything, and if you’re having fun then that’s all that matters because that’s what you paid for. :P

Yes, there is no denying that I died very little and held points against more than one for several minutes at a time, making it 4×3 in my team’s favor on other parts of the map.

im just saying at a high level of play its a bit too easily countered.

just 5v4 on 2 points until the MM is forced to join the fight, then AoE will render him mostly useless

if enemies are fighting you for several minutes on your own node, then they are bad.

i am not at all saying you can’t be really good AT being a minion necro, sure you can, but for conquest game mode it just has some major inherent flaws. its a point holder build that sux in team fights, but there are other point holder builds that hold points equally as well but do much better in team fights.

if you’re not trying to be super competitive then there is no harm in just playing what you like as long as its not something really stupid like zerker rifle warrior

^ This. I’m pretty sure you’re aware it’s not going to work at a high level of play, but few even play at that level. If it’s fun for you and you play it well for what it is, who cares about the “meta?”

I had a minionmancer on my team in unranked yesterday, and they played very well. Might have even been you, I rarely check account names.

I was playing Alien Commander the MM yesterday. My pure condi necro is The Alien.

They are always green or grey Sylvaris with space alien looks.

My own backstory explanation is that they are not using dark magic, but rather an advanced form of weapon from outer space that people mistake for magic.

I run a condi-minion hybridmancer in PvP, and it actually works very well. The combination of minion attacks plus conditions is usually more than a lot of builds can deal with. Especially if I have a full DS bar to help soak up enemy attacks too.

However, I still would not rank it as a good build due to two major bugs afflicting MM builds right now:

1. If you engage in combat while the minions are still moving, melee minions will bug out and not attack, resulting in a huge loss to DPS and healing (if you use Vampiric Master). This means that most MM’s are restricted to playing point defense and are not very mobile.

2. If you use the Flesh of the Master trait, there is still a lingering bug where if you are downed, all of your minions will die as well. This is extremely unfair considering that other pet builds (illusions, turrets etc.) do not die when their owners go down.

Zaxares.5419,

Yes, I discovered hybrid condi/minion power and it can be devastating.

Thanks for the tips about the bugs. I found I can sometimes prompt the elite minion to attack if I use one of the other minion’s active buttons.

i have a PURE Power minion necro

and its an unkillable killing machine in small fights feels like godmode MAX 3v3

but in bigger fights ? it feels reeeeeealy useless.

But for soloing in WvW
or small fights in SPvP its Daaaamn good.

ALSO the BUGS maaan the BUGS When your Elite skill Flesh golem standing next to you AFK while you fight and EVEN if you tell him to charge after the charge he runs back to you and stay afk IS CRAP !!!

Ive always been one to say use the build that fits your playstyle. Anyone can roll a terror necro. Anyone can use a tripple kit engi. Anyone can play a mediguard or bunker guard. Its all up to practice that decides your effectiveness. (barring external circumstances)

But what decides your enjoyment of the game is..ultimately…going to be how much fun you as an individual enjoy it.

If playing an MM necro is what you enjoy. Do it. kitten anyone else that says otherwise. If the build happens to be weak youl find a position for yourself in the leaderboard where it fits. In that range your skill will decide where you place. As long as you accept that then your golden.

Too many people forget this is a game. And that enjoyment of the moment is what its about. I cant tell you how many people I see playing builds they hate because there worried about being “meta”.

Sure there highly placed. But they log onto there character less and less and focus on leveling up alts because doing that is more fun than playing there main. Because they pigeonholed themselves into meta builds that in no way match there playstyle just for the sake of “effectiveness”

Edit: The trick is using the build that matches your playstyle in a way that allows you to fight against stronger builds more effectively. MM is actually pretty good with that due to the number of combos and debilitations a necro has access to. Learning how to use them against something like a cele ely however takes time and patience.

Another point: if you go heavy conditions, you can still be quite powerful, and useful in team fights after your minions die. And you can use one slot for a boons-to-conditions ability instead of one of the minions. Remember, minions still hit just as hard regardless of your power or crit rating.
