Hello!
I’m a longtime GW1&2 veteran and semi-competitive tournament player. I’ve been reading the forums and have noticed more anet-hate now than I have in quite some time. I have really worried about the deterioration of PvP in GW2 since they removed the ability to queue outside of Heart of the Mists, and today I believe that PvP is at an all-time low, despite many new features added with the expansion. Essentially, if the “popularity of Structured Player vs. Player has grown at an explosive rate” then why does every patch seem to diminish the quality of “the fastest-growing area of Guild Wars 2”? This sentiment is evidenced by the growth of “let’s talk about how the game used to be fun” posts on the forum.
This forum post will be as long and detailed as possible, and I hope to create a comprehensive list for ArenaNet that includes specific examples of what players hate, what we would have liked, and suggestions for how that can get done. Please post links to other forum posts below so I can add your input.
Part 1: What Players Hate
Structured Player vs. Player is inherently boring.
The #1 problem with PvP in GW2 is that it if you spend an hour doing it, maybe only 30-45 minutes of it are fun. The other 15-30 minutes are spent sitting in a queue waiting to have fun. Unfortunately, ArenaNet removed the ability to queue outside of Heart of the Mists, supposedly because of some conflict with queues popping while players were in loading screens. This drastically reduced the fun of PvP, and hundreds of thousands of players’ hours have now been wasted sitting in Heart of the Mists doing practically nothing. Not only are queue times very boring, but they can often be very long, especially at diamond and legendary divisions. This issue is even worse for streamers, because all their viewers are forced to watch them do nothing while they queue. ArenaNet must take action to address this concern, as it is the single worst thing about PvP.
For a more detailed conversation of this issue, see here.
Structured Player vs. Player is inherently unfair.
The second biggest problem within Structured PvP is that it is inherently unfair. The fact that I could queue up alone, and be matched with teammates who are also alone, and face an entire premade team communicating on teamspeak, is unbelievable. Yes, I understand that I may not be penalized for playing this team, and can get an even greater reward if I beat them, but this inherently unfair match happens so often and is not fun for either parties. The solo team will be upset they have such an unfair game, and in many cases, it’s a boring blowout match for the premade team. There are probably fewer hairs on my head than the amount of times the PvP community has asked ArenaNet to reimplement a solo queue, but this request has been unmet and undiscussed, which is perhaps their largest blunder
The League System is perceived by many to be a failure.
It is a general consensus among top players that the league system is a failure. This is for multiple reasons, but largely because leagues are really more about how much you play than how good you are, which was the same exact problem with the last leaderboard test season. The current league system also exacerbates the previously mentioned problems, further ruining player morale and disincentivizing players from PvPing.
The game is balanced upon a faulty foundation.
Many players have complained about a number of game-breaking bugs that have been ignored for far too long. It is much more important to fix a previous implementation that was done poorly, than to implement something else on top of it, because this may also be done poorly and add to an ever-growing list of functionality problems. It is imperative that ArenaNet address these bugs because they diminish the quality of gameplay, and in tournaments can completely ruin matches.
- Being immobilized mid-air prevents you from doing anything.
- Sometimes, players can dodge while immobilized and therefore negate the entire duration of a very costly CC.
- Quickness and Slow can ruin stomps.
- Guardian traps may not visualize and cause players to be knocked down endlessly
- Transferred conditions still cause rallies
- Ranger pets reappear after ranger dies.
The list goes on…
Current balance is literally the worst we’ve ever had.
Just watch this vod of the last Pro League match. This is without a doubt the most boring thing I’ve ever seen.
