And do you really that will do any good? The answer is obviously No. You will be likely kittened back, blocked and/or even reported for insults if you really offended someone, and being reported again just to double check. Of course, nothing will change for you and the other player.

You can’t say that it won’t do any good, when criticism is a great motivational tool for improvement.

That’s only true for constructive criticism.
Allow me to tell you that saying things like “OMG! Noob team! Please kill our lord!”, “Go back to PvE”, “Our mesmer is a noob” followed by some rants of your choice is far away from being constructive.
I hope you were not thinking about theses as “motivational tools” since they look pretty much insults to me.

But you ‘can’ use that as a motivation to get better unless it’s just a straight troll saying those things. The internet is filled with a ton of good videos, guides, builds, and strategies to help players get better at PvP ( and anything else for that matter ). And guess how simple it is? Head to Google.

There’s very few reasons people should be just God-awful, and practically know nothing in sPvP other than being willfully ignorant because “It’s a game, and I’ll play how I want! kitten the other people!”. While you call people who verbally abuse players “toxic”, I call those that simply don’t care enough to do some research and, get a couple of games under their belt before they head to Ranked Arena, toxic. Why? Because that ONE person ruins the experience of the other FOUR players who may know how to play or, not be as horrible to where they’re contributing something other than a free kill and a decap.

This is why I usually just stick to Hotjoin. You run into toxic types much less there. (Also, if you do get those AFK-types on your team, you can just leave the match instead of wasting your time.)

I’m not usually bothered by them though. If it gets bad enough, I just block and report the player in question. I always aim to play respectfully and politely; it IS just a game after all.

I like the idea of blocking and giving nicknames. :-) Society is full of people who would run down a child in a wheelchair, get outta their car, then yell at the kid as he crawls back to his broken wheelchair—for scratching his Lexus’ bumper. The greatest deception in life is that most people are decent.

If you don’t play well and im doing ranked i’d of course blame it on them. If I see a guardian push far at the start of a match and leave a lb ranger to defend home of course id question why he was doing ranked matches.

That happens in most games…people just need to lower their expectations to avoid raging.

Hi there! Today I drop here to talk about a concern I am recently having about the insane amount of Toxic Players on PvP ranked match.

By Toxic Player I mean people that behave in way that it hurts the game and even other player’s feelings. Some examples would be:

  • Players who AFK because they just give up and think it’s not worth playing. (yeah, they still do that knowing that the Dishonor it’s actually turned off or doesn’t work properly). Some of them even do give advice to the contrary team!
  • Players that harass, makes fun of and insults other players because they apparently come from PvE/they don’t play well enough/don’t follow their orders.
  • Players who just insult and blame their teamates after/during a lost game. Very common on sore loser who think they were awesome but their teamates failed.
  • Rage leavers (theses are actually punished on their leaderboard score anyway)

Personally, I both block and report those players (and even sometimes I send them a last message warning them about their rudeness).
I know that sometimes people just have bad days and cant hold their tongues. No one enjoys the taste of defeat, and I also sometimes rage too at home when I lose a match after another, but that’s not reason to behave that way or being rude. If you have nothing good to say, simply you shouldn’t say anything at all…

I am seeing that behaviour over and over is way disturbing, and I feel somehow fighting for a lost cause , and it will be always be like this until there is some action from above.
It’s not pleasant at all reading chat messages from a experienced player telling other ones to uninstall the game or to go back to PvE.

Above that, and also more disturbing to my understanding, I also noticed that some of theses toxic players are on the first page of the PvP Leaderboards (Sorry, not going to give names or hints about what region I am talking about), and well, it’s pretty troublesome that theses player are not only not being punished in any way for that kind of behaviour, but they are also going to be rewarded with juicy stuff!!

What do you think about this?

juicy stuff? You mean that lama that everyone already has or that armor that looks like crap? lol

but Zaxares, hotjoin is plagued by team stacking, 2v1 3v2 4v3 5v4 and auto balance wars as well. hard to find decent match in hotjoin nowadays.

in the end, i resorted to ranked arena instead. queuing together with some friends help.

I dont play ranked without a premade team. No point in that. I play unranked if I dont have a team and just want to play random games. I’m not the best player, not the worst either be it combat skill, knowledge of classes/builds or tactical “eye”.

I too think that ppl should at least check out the metabuilds for the class they play, know the maps and general idea of the gamemode and try their best in the game. And ofc take advice and remarks whatever mistakes they made and make effort to improve. Not be indifferent and “play the way they want to” cause there’s 4 other ppl.

But as far the so called “toxic” ppl go. I always take say, mapchat and whisperchat off when playing and often also the teamchat because in unranked ppl rarely bother using it anyway and if they do its not for constructive purposes.

This way i spare myself the trouble and energy of even blockin ppl or even more futile arguing or reasoning with some person flaming behind the keyboard. I guess certain type of verbal trolling and trashtalking is fine, kind of “psychological warfare” Muhammed Ali style.

But ppl being mean and getting really personal is not cool. Cowardly action behind a keyboard when you know you will not be accountable of the things you say.

I’ve read each post since my last, but well, i will trying to do an overall reply.

For those who say “Get a thicker skin”, “Deal with it”,“Rudeness is part of the game”,“They deserve it for doing ranked” or defend in any way toxic behaviour against certain players, you should know the following:

According to Guild Wars 2 Rules of Conducts (click here to take a look) and refering to the text on point 1:

The rules of conduct

1. While playing Guild Wars 2, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the Game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, embarrass or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. This includes posting insulting, offensive, or abusive comments about players, repeatedly sending unwanted messages, reporting players maliciously, attacking a player based on race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. Hate speech is not tolerated

The point is that you are defending and excusing something that goes against the RoC.

Also let me say that this is not really the harsh language , but about the will to harass and hurt from others, and that may extend not only to insults and harassing, but also to AFK and losing on purpose.

So… if their behaviour is against the RoC.. why should I turn off my chat? No, the problem is on their side, and their should hold their tongues if they know what’s convenient for them because each time you insult a player, you are a step closer to the ban hammer.

My enjoyment of the game has totally been ruined by toxic players that send insults after insults at me over the interwebs over a vidya game. Anet should totally ban all these immature toxic players, so that I can continue playing GW2 in a family friendly setting, so that all my matches are full of nice carebears.

Too much whining. “Rudeness” cannot be policed or enforced without completely removing chat from the game, is that what you want? They don’t like the way you play, and you don’t like they way they talk. Too bad. If you want to teach people manners go volunteer to work with orphans or something.

I hear Hello Kitty Island Adventures is on sale.

Don’t get it wrong: Being respectful to others has nothing to do with Hello Kitty, ponys or fluffy bears.

That’s an extreme case of harrasing. If I had been harassed that way, I would not only reported in game and blocked the guy, but also raised a ticket just to make sure it is reviewed. That sort of players are extremely toxic regardless the game you play.

I’d suggest to edit that pic to censor the names since the forums are not a place to point at specific players

Let’s them continue that kind of behavior if the report system fail to do anything about it (as they have a PvPers will be PvPers kind of stance on it) then watch how they cry for Play PvP without buying to shore up the ranks in a mode that will need them desperately if all those who only dabble in it suddenly stay out to give the ‘True PvPer’ what they want.

I turn the chat off myself because its the pragmatical solution to a problem that isn´t going to be solved by reporting, flaming back, arguing back, reasoning etc. Only way it´s gonna stop is some type enforcing from the part of service provider Anet in this case. Its not the case what is righteous and just.

I usually just wait in base if one or more team mates are doing stupid things despite of warnings and advices. Of course only if this behaviour guarantee us loss and the match is already lost. I don’t really enjoy playing a match with my own team mates helping enemy.

How would you act if you see that player in your team, who keeps rushing far point with turret engi there and die 5x in a row in few seconds. These people are worse than plague for your team, giving free points to enemy and should not be tolerated in ranked games.

You are bad and want to play? Sure, go and play, but not in ranked arena. I don’t mind telling what I think, or blocking people who deny to use brain. If they block me back because I am “rude idiot” – I couldn’t care less.

I have found that when I do encounter toxic players it is usually when I solo q’d. And it seems plenty of them are always solo q-ing, which makes sense because why would anybody want to be on a premade with a rage-a-holic.

The best way to avoid them is to play in premade teams…you don’t even necessarily need to be in a team of five, which is the ideal situation, but even having just one of your guildies in your team seems to keep the rage bears in check.

Well, sabotaging the game of your own team intentionally like that classic far point rush and dying there repeatedly or leaving points when they need to be deffed or attacking to a point with three ppl when its covered or capping empty point with 2-3 ppl is clearly a sign of not knowing what to do or being intentionally ignorant. In this case i agree no ranked maybe.

But ppl rage even in unranked full randoms in a fashion that maybe could be more constructive than just calling ppl kittens, naabs, noobs, scrubs whatever. Unless ppl are intentionally ignorant or stupid they listen when you just say couple of things and then if they dont listen fall into category of not caring. Not saying that its the “elite” players responsibily to give advice or lead but certainly just kittenting on ppl wont help. Some ppl will “go back to pve” or “go to hotjoin” but many others will not if they want to play spvp. Cause in the end you can just disable the chat and do whatever.

It’s true that if they were pretty strict on their rules, game would be half-empty, but I’ve witnessed some cases that are way too offensive to be tolerated in any way, and that must be stopped.
As you say, I could just ignore it, but that’s not good enough in some cases since leaving troll players prancing around the game only hurts the game itself. It’s not only limited to PvP. Do you think it would be ok to leave gold sellers spam as they want just because you can ignore them too? Of course not.

When I see toxic players I usually tell them that if they were talented players they could carry almost any game so they should rather focus on their own skills rather than sb else’s. That silences many flamers.

I also think that Anet should perhaps take more responsibility for the toxic behavior in the PvP. It’s not only a matter of having a pleasant evening, it’s also an educational issue. There are many young people playing the game too and some people might learn that if they are allowed to blurt out anything to a stranger in the game without any consequence they are allowed to do it in irl as well.

OP Something to think on:

Your success if you soloque is 1/5th on you and 4/5th on your team. People that have been around for quite sometime usually are able to see right off the bat if someone is likely to throw a match for them. Just saying.

You can try and pick up that slack of the player that is clearly throwing a match by running into a 1v3 or pushing the mobs right at the start, or trying event o go to the lord at the start.

So yeah I can understand players being peeved about that.

GW2 is nothing special in terms of toxic pvp-players. I just do what I’ve always done: Insta block and report and focus on the nice players and add them to the FL.

it’s like that at almost everything in the internet: 90% is bad, just focus on the 10% that’s good and ignore/report the rest.

There are many kids and teenagers that could view those behaviours as “acceptable” or personnal and feel hurt…

If someone is bad or stupid enough on your team you are easily worth less then 1/5th of the outcome for your team even if you do everything right. There is plenty of blame to go around but the number one problem is people doing rated that have no right being there. It all stems from that. An experienced player can only watch people go to the wrong point so many times in a match where they are getting there clock cleaned before some of them are going to explode rightly or wrongly from a proper etiquette standpoint.

Anet should just take report of Verbal Abuse seriously and ban them for a week per complaint or so. That’ll make them realise.

For me the annoying ones are the arena hijackers in hotjoin.

When they are alone, they take turns killing each other fast to farm rank and wins. When one player joins, they tell them to leave because they are “1vs1”, and if the player doesn’t leave, they join the opposite team and harass that one player until they leave.

If they are told to go to one of the many 1vs1 custom arena already set and not full, or to get their own custom arena, they refuse. Obviously, because they are not really ‘1vs1’. They are hijacking standard public arenas for their own private use.

As for verbal abuse and toxicity, at least the opposite teams should not be able to speak with each other. There will be still toxicity between team members, but for that there’s at least the possibility of getting a team made with other people.

I think kitten talking, and playing the blame game is one of the things you’re never going to change in a PvP setting.

False ego and pride ftw.

I talk a ton of trash when I’m on and drinking beers. It’s hilarious. I love calling out the PVE scrubs in RANKED doing dailies…those are my favorite people to troll.

I also love it when people rage Whisp me after matches, but it typically gets defused very fast because I don’t take myself serious and tend to joke with them after shreking noobs.

Racism, homophobia, threats, that’s not cool. That’s not my style, but I will be the first one to dance on your corpse calling you a noob. =)

The problem is with Arenanet and the matchmaking system. You have total beginners being put into matches with experienced players in ranked play. The experienced players know what they are doing, and want to win. The beginners don’t have a clue and don’t even realize that they are singlehandedly causing the rest of their teammates to lose a match. Many of them think that they are playing well. Mind you, matches don’t immediately pop, so one total noob que’ing for a rated match can essentially steal 15-20 minutes of the time from his four teammates.

What do you expect the experienced players to do? Of course they are going to flame the person who is in a venue they really aren’t skilled enough to be in. That is their only way of dealing with the situation other than running in a full premade for every game. Unlike some other games, their is no mechanism to provide feedback or downvote players who clearly shouldn’t be in rated, who afk, etcetera.

Until A-net fixes matchmaking this will continue to be a problem, driving both new and experienced players away from PVP because of this clash of skill levels.

That’s exactly why i tend to play hot joins lately. After thousands of ranked matches played, i really don’t want to watch the next 3 people rush the animal or camp home. At least i don’t expect anything in hot joins and can just leave without any further problems.

The big matchmaking fix patch last year ruined matchmaking completely.

Interesting thread: i agree with you Jade Arkadian: Toxic Pvp Players should be taken very serious include their toxic behaviors. Toxic behaviors push players away from pvp and go somewhere else that do not tolerate it.

More examples of toxic

1. Taking everything too personally. – “People are toxic to be around when they believe that everything happening around them is a direct assault on them or is in some way all about them”

2. Lack of emotional self-control- “An inability to manage your emotions is toxic to everyone around you”.

3. Making superficial judgments about others. – “Don’t always judge a person by what they show you. Remember, what you’ve seen is oftentimes only what that person has chosen to show you, or what they were driven to show based on their inner stress and pain. Alas, when another person tries to make you suffer in some small way, it is usually because they suffer deep within themselves. Their suffering is simply spilling over. They do not need punishment or ridicule, they need help. If you can’t help them, let them be”.

4. “Cruelty (or lacking empathy and compassion). – One of the most toxic behaviors – cruelty – stems from a total lack of empathy, concern or compassion for others (name calling: stupid, kitten, idiot)”

5. "They tear people down online in a cowardly way, using their anonymity as a shield. Cruelty, backstabbing, and hurting others for any reason is toxic, and it hurts you as well. If you find yourself backstabbing and tearing someone else down, stop in your tracks. Dig deep and find compassion in your heart, and realize that we’re all in this together (teamwork) ".

6. Perfectionist/Grandiosity- “They shatter your self esteem. They beat you down mentally and keep you feeling small enough (”L2P, Noob") so that there is no reason to challenge their perceived authority".

When you find those that are toxic, swiftly block and report them. It’s just as simple as that. Don’t forget to report them though. Just had a raging loon in a match. These folks are simply not worth your, mine, or anyone’s time.
