Hello,

I know how these things go. I am “too new” to have anything of value to contribute. Well, you might be right as far as the nuts and bolts of the game but I do have a fresh perspective and some questions. I guess I should say a little something about the kind of player I am. I am a former multi-high-rating arena player in WoW. I know, very little translates over to this game but I only mention it because I tend to strive for the higher end gameplay. But I digress.

I have been doing a lot of sPvP and is it me or does everyone play Necro or Engineer? I was recruited to this game for it’s “balance” and “variety.” I guess what I am asking is, was I lied to? Lol. I also watched the PAX EU qualifiers and the teams that won matches pretty much had the same setup across the board resulting in the latter stages of the tournament being mirror matches. If they strayed from Necro, Thief, Engi, Elementalist, Warrior they seemed to get stomped pretty handily. Moreover, it seemed like they all took the same skills/weapons choices.

I understand I am not yet involved in the more organized PvP but after watching the PAX EU qualifier stream, I am not sure I really want to. Has the balance always been this lop-sided? Does states such as it is now stay for very long? How come there is very little communication by the dev’s? I mean, even WoW and SWTOR dev’s use twitter to inform it’s customers (perhaps they do but I cannot find it). I know, then why don’t I play WoW? I am sick of it and was hoping for a change of scenery. I remember when this game came out that they said if the game wasn’t e-sport viable, they would consider it a failure… or something to that effect. Well, the PAX gameplay was really kind of boring and teams running the same setup was really, well, lackluster.

Did I get my hopes up too high for the sPvP in this game? Am I better off just shelving this game or does Arena Net do the right thing more often than not? I understand I will get the usual trolls and that’s fine. I am really searching for a new game to get involved with and I want it to be this but as I said in the topic, I have concerns.

There is an illusion of balance because everyone has access to the same gear, and all the essential skill types (damage, heal, stun break, condition removal, resurrect). But no it isnt really that good.

Regarding what you have seen, people love to exploit the most powerful builds of the time. And the game really does not encourage variety. Since all professions can do essentially everything, it is simple to just take the most powerful profession at the moment. Some still provide specialty functions which make them desirable in a team, as you have likely seen, but the variety does not go far. (Gw1 in contrast offered endless possibilities to those who could think)

It is still a solid game to stick with, but I think your friends may have oversold it.

Thank you for the response. Ya perhaps they did oversell it. I understand that is the nature of MMO’s, the constant imbalance’s but there seems to be a lack of diversity in this game compared to other games. Or perhaps it just seems that ways due to my expectations going in.

Most players are necro’s at the moment because you can roll your face on the keyboard and win. Engineers…i don’t see that many to be honest.

you asked for balance and when op-states stay very long and i have to say yes.
Arenanet is very slow in balancing and they dont fix broken things even when they know its broken.

GW2pvp looks like they dont have alot devs and for spvp they do only things when they have freetime from livingstory. Sry when a spvp-dev reading this but for us the playerz it looks like you guyz are afk or something^^

If you wish to be successful in this game then you will be pigeon holed into a select few builds, which is why the top teams will run mirror lineups.

A year down the road and there is even less variability in team compositions, im not sure whether this is due to game type or the game balance.

On a positive note it is fun to play now and then, and the combat is extremely fluid, i dare say the best i’ve experienced.

Play a little longer and decide for yourself.
