Hey there, I started PVP recently and thought I would try playing in the practice arena to get better without treading on toes. I know this happens a lot in many games, but I was pretty surprised that people in GW2 (who seem relatively nice otherwise!) do a lot of kitten-talking – not even to the other team, but towards their own. A lot of us are still new and learning, and so it can be pretty hard for us against people with years of experience and legendaries.

I’m wondering if maybe instead of talking kitten people could give more advice or suggestion on improvement? Or just not say anything unless it’s constructive? It’s just demoralizing for those of us trying to improve. Unless practice PVP is supposed to be only for hardcore players and I just missed the memo, I just don’t see the point of these responses (and many of them come from people who aren’t contributing that much themselves it seems, which is doubly weird).

Again, nothing new, but just got kind of tired and wanted to speak up. Thanks!

Don’t play practice arenas, especially if you’re new. The matches are terribly imbalanced with people leaving and joining as they please. You’ll do much better just playing unranked arenas with set 5v5 teams, learning rotations, what the meta is in terms of builds, when to engage and when to run etc.

Trust me, unranked arenas may seem intimidating, but they’re a godsend when compared to the cluster**** that is hotjoin.

I don’t really trust people (in a general sense) to give constructive. People don’t even agree on what constitutes “constructive”. I’ve come across too many people who sincerely think that straight up blunt is “constructive” even when it means you have absolutely nothing positive to say to cushion the blow.

I’ve learned more about PvP from my guild skirmishing in a guild arena. Commentary is given in full view of other members who would hold them accountable if someone was mean about it.

I go into practice arena all the time if im on a new class, or if i just want to mess around. Sure its no fun and when i was new i hated it because it was just zerging by whichever team had more players but sometimes it was even and that was alright. I gave constructive criticism wherever i could, but its also kind of difficult to give advice. Some people take it as you are telling them you are better than them, which i guess you kind of are, but i ususally just try to tell them i have a bit more experience than them on a certain class or i know a couple of tips they dont. For some reason in every game mode even practice tensions and prides are high.

Maybe they could add a hotjoin where people enter solely to get advice i.e. you can enter as a student or a mentor. That could be interesting although extremely difficult to figure out.

Best advice try to find a friendly pvp guild and ask for help there. Or ask friends who are better than you to 1v1 and learn from them.

OP, it’s called people being jerks. And it’s a lot easier for these people to be like that behind their little computer monitors, where they know they can spew their garbage without fear of someone having enough of their crap and decking them in the mouth like they often times deserve.
But, take solace in the fact that not everyone gets off on being insufferable jerkwads. There are good people around… Ignore the mental-midgets, because frankly, they are not worth anyone’s time or effort.

“If half as many people were half as brave in real life as they were online…
… The human race would never have to worry about be oppressed again.”
I think trolls should have their computers smashed. ’Its all part of the game. U mad bro?’

“For kittens sake. Kitten kitten and kitten the kitten what a kitten go kitten or else I kitten you, stupid kitten.”

This is basically the type of feedback you can expect in most PvP environments

Yeah, sadly you either have to just deal with it or hide your chat.

But take heart – you will run into players, whether allies or enemies who will make the game enjoyable for you.

Best advice would be to ask in HotM if anyone wants to group up for unranked and wouldn’t mind showing you some of the ropes.

You can also check out the sticky on this forum, qqmore.net, and watching top players on twitch.tv (and asking questions in chat).

Hotjoin is purely for messing around/build testing, and exists mostly for custom arenas to host private tourneys/dueling.
