Custom arenas: A mistake?
Custom arenas are superior to tournaments as they allow players to dictate the terms of the match.
I don’t know about you, but it was at the top of my list of features this game needs. Every e-sport has custom arenas.

Well, GW 2 pvp is not e-sport yet ( and it wont be for a long time or ever), so custom arenas as priority? i beg to differ. How about adding basic pvp features other MMORPGs have first?

If it wants to ever be one, it will need it.
You can’t just limit your focus to other MMOs. You need to look at competitive FPS/MOBA/RTS games as well. All of them release with custom arenas. It’s a necessity for allowing teams to practice.
Entire e-sport idea for GW 2 is bad imo.People who play MMORPGs dont play them for e-sport features.Played AoC, WoW ,WAR,SWTOR and i dont remember devs in those games trying to force this e-sport “find a team or dont pvp at all” nonsense on me or other players.I was doing pvp in those games because it was fun, and i could pvp when i wanted be it alone or in a group.
I couldn’t care less about custom arenas. there are so many other things that are needed to simply make the PvP aspect of the game enjoyable, and, by extension, grow the community. custom arenas in the current state is just renting out private rooms for some cheap champagne and a toothless hooker named peggy i.e. fun for a little while but nothing to write home about.

Um it’s the same as in E-sport games, you can PvP by yourself but you’re not going to have any sort of spotlight that way.
I’m iffy on the whole custom arenas atm because of the whole renting aspect, is that gonna be via gems? Gold? Glory? What?

A .. spotlight? I dont want a spotlight i wanna fun to play pvp, as most people who play pvp in MMORPGs do.

Well I personally love the PvP and I sure as hell don’t have a team anymore (RL is a kitten), so idk what you’re not enjoying from it.

And what prevents you from having fun in hotjoin or free tournaments?
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”
I think so. It will be good for dueling and things like that ofc, but it will split not so big pvp community even further and spvp and tournaments matcheswill become even more scarce than they already are. They would be better off just adding any time/any place dueling and more pvp mods as well as deserter debuff to make pvp more fun and interesting, along with fixing bugs, to create influx of new players interested in pvp.Furthermore i dont remember many people asking for this feature at all,yet devs talk like custom arenas are what players asked for and need most at this time, and are some kind of priority? Puzzled.
This feature is basically everything we’ve ever needed.
Anet has compared their PvP system to a shooter when it was in development, having server lists and changeable rules and such.
It’s what drives games like TF2 and CS:S. It will work wonders for GW2.
I’m puzzled as to how you can even consider calling this must-have “a mistake.”
I literally cannot understand what argument you’ve had in your head, that concluded that custom arenas are a mistake. Like, what? Tons of servers with rulechanges, amazing for practice and dawdling, good for fun competition. Once you’ve been practicing, you could hotjoin. Or you could do both.

How do any of those things:
- make PvP as a separate part of GW2 feel like a complete aspect of the game?
- entice new players to come to PvP?
- bring more teams to paid tourneys?
- attract any kind of attention whatsoever to players other than those who already spend the bulk of their time in PvP?
I’m not insinuating that custom arenas won’t be a nice “feature”, but they won’t be anything more than that at this stage of the game. PvP is simply not a complete facet of the game, and needs to be adjusted to to create growth from the bottom up, rather than catering to all these esport demands. ANet seems to have blinders on about this game becoming an e-sport and mostly to the detriment of the game as a whole. It won’t matter if there’s custom arenas, spectator mode, ladder rankings, etc., if there’s no one around to care by the time it’s implemented and flushed out – which is essentially the road they’ve put this game on.

So you’re saying that custom arenas will not encourage teams to play together, as well as potentially create new teams?
I fail to see what Anet can do to bring in more players. The players have to come by themselves. Having actual features will bring them in. A custom arena is a very crucial and essential feature.
Having a ladder and a spectating client will work wonders as well.
Having some sort of finished progression would be help keeping players around as well.
Currently, SPvP is just a huge unfinished mess. Having essentials like these above is.. Well, essential. What else would you rather have them spend their time on?
That’s pretty much the three things that comes to mind. Besides other gamemodes, but that’s sort of tied into Custom Arenas anyway.

You quote my post then ask me what argument i had? Its right there custom arenas will further fragment pvp players imho, separating spvp from paid and free tournaments is bad enough. You wanna practice go spvp, but first fix spvp so that it is fun to play for all PvP players with multiple fun game mods and mists duels and some kind of meaningful rank progression ( like for example you only win glory points if you win match otherwise you get small amount of xp) and ladder for ALL players.
Then, if you wanna make this game e-sport organize weekly, monthly and yearly tournaments where it is required to have team to enter ONLY without this tickets nonsense, have those teams do qualifying matches then best teams go into finals and have a chance to win meaningful prizes ( unique armor and weapon skins, unique pets and titles, ingame shop currency and items). Those events will attract even more players, sponsors etc.
That is how you build e-sport imo not with custom pay to rent arenas nonsense.

No, I definitely think custom arenas will encourage ‘some teams’ to play together. My fear is that the result will be that it will further detract from the paid que population, as well as further disrupt the already lacking progression in PvP.
Like you said though, “sPvP is just a huge unfinished mess”. That needs to be addressed if there’s ever going to be any attraction for new players to join and stay in the HotM. Currently all they get is a barren lobby (HotM), a free-for-all thinly disguised as a conquest game (hotjoins), pugs fighting premades and vice-versa (free tourneys), while paids are simply not an option given the ticket requirement and not even available for spectating.
That’s supposed to entice someone to play PvP with any kind of consistency? And where do custom arenas fit into that? Haphazardly, it would seem, since it offers no new level of skill or competitive progression except for those already dedicated to PvP (which is not a large number of people).
The features you list are important, no doubt, but I just don’t think they’ll make any difference to creating a buzz around the game so long as the core of the PvP game remains “an unfinished mess”.

Baby steps. They’d drop the entire thing on the floor if they aimed for all that in a setting.
Having custom arenas is a nice refreshing and (hopefully) not too demanding in terms of man-power to create.
It’ll definitely get me out of Lion’s Arch and into the Mists more often, and I’m sure others will feel the same way.
I might be the only one who expected a FPS-esque type of PVP management though.
Calling Custom Arenas a mistake however, I really can’t comprehend that.
I guess it’s something like this: The current state of SPvP is rather bad.
However, in my opinion, it is only bad because it was shipped without the necessary features. It feels incomplete.
They’re filling this hole in SPvP, thus making SPvP, in my opinion, go from rather bad to decent. And the more they add, the better and more complete it’ll be.
I see Custom Arenas as one of the steps they need to have before the “bad” label is taken off. The other steps being Ladder, spectating, all the other stuff.
A bad priority, maybe. A mistake, not so much. It’s gotta be there one way or the other.
And as far as I’m aware, they said they were going to improve the barrenland known as HotM in terms of ranks and such? Or I might be delusional.

I agree with hackks. I think the devs have their priorities backwards. They need to cater to casuals to build the base then add things for e-sports. Casuals care about dueling, better glory allocations, more rewards, ability to show off gear outside the mists, more maps other than conquest, etc.
After you put in the basics and grow the base, then concentrate on e-sport additions like custom arena. I also agree that custom arenas will fragment the already dimishing pvp population.
no, not at all. custom arenas will be a huge success, probably the only upcoming feature to revitalize spvp. custom rules, themed servers, easier to organize duels, etc. yes please.
matchmaking is coming out at the same time in addition to 1v1 team tourneys. i never felt the need for more maps. new game modes can wait. this isnt where variety is needed. we need build variety. the playground is next to irrelevant.
Entire e-sport idea for GW 2 is bad imo.People who play MMORPGs dont play them for e-sport features.Played AoC, WoW ,WAR,SWTOR and i dont remember devs in those games trying to force this e-sport
those games had the most atrocious pvp ive ever played in my life. and i played most online pvp games, MMO’s included. you cant even compare to GW2.
(edited by nerva.7940)
Why the heck do we need to go into a custom arena to duel. Why cant we just duel in the mist. The mist is for pvp. So rediculous.
I’d say stick to the gamemode, let custom arenas give some ‘shake things up’ settings. Prepare the people in hotjoin for casual tpvp (which is not happening atm).
Pull people in?
Moar rewards:
Why not have mini’s in the chests? (I know I wanted that ghostly hero from HoH in gw1)
Gief us tonics!
More titles.
More visible stuff: let us inspect players pvp stats. Give us more stats. Well implemented leaderboards (ingame pls)
Make those chests a bit more fun to open. Now I just hope for a dye, most of the armor/weapons I’ll be salvaging ’cus of doubles.
Motivate people to do tpvp.
Lesser glory gain, lesser rewards through hotjoin etc. Tpvp exclusive titles, etc.
Bring back: ‘Gamer’ title + MAT’s!
Throw out: Hotjoin!
well hotjoin needs to go alltogether. there are too few people playing, and the pop should be divided between only two modes: 1v1 team tourneys, and custom arenas. anything more at this point would be a mistake.

So in your opinion my options for pvp in GW 2 ought to be get a team then buy tickets for tourney or rent custom arena and duel or play with same people over and over again? Brilliant sarcasm off.
Let me tell you what i think this custom arena business is.People ask for duels and new game mods to break staleness of 5 months palying same game mod.A- net says “You want duels and new game mods? we will give it to you but not for free we will allow you to rent custom arenas for a certain price there you go knock yourself out dueling and playing with same people constantly”.
And, as hackks said, custom arenas will only serve as a short term distraction from a real problem which is that GW 2 pvp team tried to reinvent wheel and it did not work.
I think some people here don’t understand very well how custom arenas work, or maybe it is me how has skipped something important devs have said about it.
Isn’t only one person needed to pay and rent a single server? That means that, as a casual player, if you go to the hot join menu and pick a 8v8 server, or if you go to the custom server menu and pick a password-free 8v8 player-rented server, it’s the exact same thing. So that shouldn’t cause player fragmentation. You won’t need to pay to enter a rented server, you only pay if you want to rent a server for others to join in.
So this should be a complete improvement over the hot-join system we have. Custom Servers give more money to devs from players renting them, allows pvp teams and guilds to have their own password-protected training room, and allows random players to rent open servers where everyone can “hot-join”, but with the extra that the matches will be able to be customised, to the point that some of those servers can exist for the purpose of duels.
Of course, maybe the implementation is different, and I’m the one wrong here.
I know several who are looking forward to it.
No need for deserter anything unless it’s paid/frees.
The whole idea of hot-join is come and go as you please, casual.
This isn’t RA, if someone leaves other people are capable of coming. You aren’t pre-destined to be screwed for the rest of the match.
[The]real problem which is that GW 2 pvp team tried to reinvent wheel and it did not work.
I don’t feel that’s entirely true. They’ve developed a PvP combat system that is 2nd to none. Where they’ve failed so far was developing a complete game around it. Hence, why people get bored and leave.
As far as Custom Arenas go, let’s be honest. The only motivation for ANet to add this feature is $$$$. No “if’s”, “ands”, or “buts” about it. The only players whose needs this addresses are the current players. Not new players. Not old players who’ve left. It’s simply a means of making more money off of who’s playing ‘right now’.
Could this lead to more investment in PvP? Possibly. Very slowly. Far more slowly than if the finished the initial product, creating something that actually attracts players rather than repels them. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see whether or not it pays off for the players. Confucious say: time answers all questions.
I’ve stayed at this party entirely too long
I don’t like conspiracy theories, so I’ll skip the “anet is a bunch of one-dimensional money-hungry folks” part.
The devs have stated that custom arenas will be customisable. Although we don’t know what options we’ll have yet to pick from, or turn on/ off, one of the most obvious possibilities should be the team size. That means custom arenas should allow you to play in 1v1 maps for duels, and who knows what other options it might offer.
Depending on those options, it should attract new or old players. Even the devs have defended their priority on developing custom arenas exactly because this system has a lot to offer.
EDIT:
Let’s think of more possible options this system might have:
- Defining the maps that rotate and the ones that are excluded (allows more competition when excluding casual maps like unicorn’s);
- Restricting which players can join based on rank (for more balanced or competitive maps for pvp veterans, and an easier introduction to newbies who only want to fight against other newbies);
- Anything else? This in addition to password-protected maps for competitive or personal environments, and with setting team sizes for 1v1 duels, 5v5 organized, 8v8 zerging, or anything inbetween.

I dont have problem with combat system or removal of holy trinity but there is only so many conquest games you can play before it gets boring .I have a problem with pvp system they have, represented by the fact that there is an entry fee for a certain segment of pvp.I find something like that in a game insulting, cheap and shameful especially considering that there are f2p games out there who dont even consider charging an entry fee for a pvp and actually have ingame events and competitions where you can enter free of charge and actually win something. I absolutely do not care what paid for custom servers offer, you should be able to duel people anywhere not just on a rented server and there should have been 2 or 3 different pvp modes introduced by now, not conquest and rented custom server conquest with some adjustable parameters.

Custom arenas are a casual feature, not an e-sport one…
They’re the only reason that millions of casuals play games like Counter-Strike and StarCraft.

Custom arenas will attract new players, especially casuals.
There is no question about it that Custom Arenas are needed.
I mean; ESL has already stated that they are interested in an amateur-league for GW2 months ago, but they couldn’t get it off the ground, because you can’t Make two specific Teams fight against each other. Do you think it shouldn’t be possible for the community to create Tournaments? How the hell should GW2 ever become an e-Sport then?
Besides, the implementation of Temple as a 1 Team VS 1 Team Tournament-Map, will allow Players to get Paids much more often and I think it will bring back a lot of Players, just because it will be possible to get Paid-Matches during times of the day, where you couldn’t play paids before (1 opposing Team is quite easy to find, 7 – not so much).
“Custom arenas are needed, they will attract new players” Go ahead and keep telling yourself that, maybe if you repeat it few hundred times it will become truth.Because, after all, if the devs say so its gotta be true. Right? And the fact that custom arenas will create income for them cough yet another way to milk pvp players cough is pure coincidence. Right? Yeah, right priority my …!
