To elaborate a bit..
If you volunteer for the autobalance, you’ll get the autowin. So whenever the balancing notification comes up, make sure you volunteer. If you don’t get chosen to be balanced, you’re still on the winning team. If you do get chosen to be balanced, because you volunteered you’ll get credited with a win even when you lose.
You only lose out when you don’t volunteer to autobalance, no one else does either, and the game picks you at random to move and balance. So always volunteer.
Actually, players in hot-join have been exploiting this mechanic for the past 9 months.
- Players join either team at the beginning of a match. 5 vs 5.
- As soon as one team has more points than the other, one player leaves that team and becomes a spectator. 4 vs 5.
- The losing team begins to lose more because it is outnumbered. Another player leaves that team becomes a spectator. 3 vs 5.
- Auto-balance is triggered. A player is switched from the winning team to the losing team, but has a guaranteed victory anyway because of the volunteer bonus. 4 vs 4.
- Immediately, spectators race to join the winning team only. 4 vs 5.
- The situation is hopeless. Another player leaves the losing team and becomes a spectator. 3 vs 5.
- Auto-balance is triggered. A player is switched, but has a guaranteed victory because of the volunteer bonus. 4 vs 4.
- Immediately, spectators race to join the winning team only. 4 vs 5.
- Repeat until everyone in the match is either on the winning team or has a guaranteed victory bonus from volunteering.
As long as ArenaNet continues to ignore this blatant issue, there is absolutely no point in joining a hot-join match other than to exploit auto-balance for free rewards.

I REEEEALLLY wish they’d fix this. Hotjoin could be a lot of fun if it wasn’t about spamming “join red” first and conquest second.
Sometimes I just want to hurrrdurr some PvP – trying out a new build or knowing I have to leave soon. It’s not fair to burden other people with that in unranked sometimes. It’s such a letdown when I do go into hotjoin and it’s a decent match. My team might even be losing, but we’re playing to win and it’s a lot of fun. Then the spectator hopping starts and any semblance of a “game” just falls apart.
Especially with all the new players – fixing hotjoin would be well worth it.

Fun’s been thrown out the window on April 15th, 2014. Ever since Reward Tracks were introduced (following the removal of all PvP-exclusive rewards), PvEers have been joining PvP matches (both hot-join and arena) for easy rewards. After all, we now get PvE rewards from PvP.
And we often hear about PvEers and their issues with players AFKing during large scale events to get large rewards from minimal effort. That’s also what’s been going on in PvP.
People used to PvP for fun. There was nothing else to gain from it, aside from new armor skins (that could only be used in PvP). Now, it’s all about the rewards. Most people I’ve played with will literally step off points and let the enemy capture game objectives just so the match ends faster, because trying to win “drags out the match” and “doesn’t maximize rewards”.
It’s absolutely ridiculous, insanely easy to fix, but — apparently — not marketable enough to draw ArenaNet’s attention.
