Damaging evades hurt pvp
It all comes down to how good an evade thief is. If he makes a mistake, it’s over for him, if he does well, he will beat his opponent sooner or later. A bad evade thief will pop all evades and then get shrekt to pieces while the enemy cleanses the first burst. A good one will bait out the condi clenases and then go with a weaker burst but with a higher chance of winning a fight.
Those who think DH can counter thieves really didn’t fought good thieves. A good one will bait traps, bait shield of courage and go for steal on passive fragments of faith. At that point the DH is forced to pop renewed focus. Repeat with tactical stealth, bait again and it’s over. DH is a sitting chicken on point with traps, it is relatively easy to bait them and just pew/pew from distance. But why is that? The more people play meta, the easier it gets to learn the patterns everyone follows by well... playing meta. For example I am always sure that after passive invulnerabilty a scrapper will pop healing turret. I time my stun/interrupt right to get him just as he gets out of invul to smack him. That is because I’ve seen too many of such situations and I won’t let my enemy to heal. The same goes for thieves both ways. If you watch how they fight, you will see those little dead spots in which you can strike. However if your weapons/utilities have direct effects and not aoe, it takes smooth ping and framerate to get a thief between evade frames.
Overall I think it is cheesy to deal significant damage during evade which is superior to counter damage. Why is that? A good thief won’t go for a condi bomb, he will go for baiting and slowly taking down the enemy if it comes to 1v1, disengaging when his target pops cooldowns. This is how it is meant to be played. Based on my fights I’ve figured out that when thief disengages, this is the moment when he is the most vulnerable. Chase them for a short range to force their initiative and evades for escaping. Then you will have a few seconds of rest due to lack or too little evades and initiative. It all comes down to outwitting your opponent and a smooth framerate/good ping to time everything perfectly.

I stopped complaining. And joined the OP AF staff evade thief crowd. That spec don’t require much of a brain. Staff evade thief 1v1 IMO is one of the less counterable builds in small scale WvW.
Now image 3 or more roaming together. Any ways you guys should just stop complaining. And join the rest of us on the Staff Evade Daredevil overlords of small scale WvW. It’s fun to not only have 6 or more evades more then anyone else in the game, but to also have one of the highest burst in the game in a defensive mechanic.
Lulz complaining about Thieves from WvW in a PvP thread in the PvP subforum.
Completely different balance.
And it’s hilarious the tone of this thread OP states no counters to Evades, a player posts a fraction of the counters to Evades, the OP says those don’t count……..
And by the Logic of OP then no one should be able to do any damage while they are invuln, pseudo invuln or Blocking.

Please don’t strawman me. Understand I’m a reasonable person who is just making what I feel is a reasonable suggestion about balance. I’ve been playing this game since launch for over 8000 games. I genuinely want pvp to be balanced and fun. The sentiment I’m voicing is shared by the vast majority of high mmr pvpers I know.
I could go into great detail about what changes the community would appreciate, but I know it would fall on deaf ears. The vitriol in this thread proves that. Its actually pretty depressing.
Honestly what I would love more than anything would be if Arenanet decided to read and consider a community designed balance suggestion document. I know my guild zlt would leap towards the challenge.

How many of those counters actually work though, as an engi, calling slick shoes an option is bs, since the nerfs they have not seen a use in a real scenario.

Should i give up the Runes of Lyssa (transfroms 5 conditions in boons) or Runes of Forge (get 175 toughness + Protection at 50% HP) and Hammer’s Enginners superior weapons for some troll build ?
What else to hampered/cripple myself ?

Hum….so how do you consider blocks + retaliation ? or shield of arcane from ele ? or the focus shield from guard.
It’s pretty much the same….
Actually the whole theme of thief is that it can’t defend while being offensive. Other classes can tank WHILE getting in your face and attacking and not really have to worry about it. Evading puts a pause on a thief’s offense, which is why we have to be bursty thematically to balance it out. The only skills that technically deal damage WHILE evading are pistol whip, death blossom, and impaling lotus. Everything else is punishable (yes, even bound).
But since we’re talking about evade skills, thieves literally need skills like these due to their conceptual nature; otherwise there wouldn’t be any damage output. Watch a thief try to run up to you and deal damage without evading, then proceed to kill them.

Unrelenteing Asssult got nerfed like 5 times because of the dodge damage mechenic.
Reckless Dodge damage is not comparable, plus warrior has less leisure to spam dodge like thief does.
Blurred Frenzy locks you in place with small radius so it doesn’t matter. (It doesn’t track people like Unrelanting Assault)
Burning Speed has quite abit of CD, so after people see the attack, they won’t be seeing it for some seconds so you can outplay it by just standing out of that small trial.
Thief is the only one that can spam dodge attack without cd concern.
How to fix it? Just add ICD on dodge attack.

I’ve never played thief in PvP, but all I know is that once you catch them without a dodge they die instantly. The class relies on them. I’d say thief is one of best designed classes in the game, because fighting them is so different.
That’s not true in WvW. A dire thief can eat at least 2 gravediggers from a full glass reaper and is still standing to just shadowstep or SB5 away spamming /wave emotes. It’s ridiculous. Evade spam and multiple disengage skills on 20k health and 3k armor while doing constant armor ignoring condi damage is the definition of broken.
sPvP is a different story because no dire/trailblazer. Here all thief builds are squishy and die on a regular basis when locked down for one or two seconds. I guess that’s the reason why ANet did not nerf D/D condi yet.

3. IF i can fend off another burst thief with 11k life (Thats two hits ) you shouldn’t be having a problem with any profession. do you need a hint? IT’s all in the sound ques.
