To be honest I have no problem with Matchmaking this season. Season 1 was so bad that you get people in Ruby who have no idea what they are doing.

So to all those people complaining, (Almost 4 years of pvp and I have never seen you guys once in game)

Could you kindly post a screenie of how many matches you have?

I am not using the number of matches as an algorithm or coefficient for MMR values, the key is if you have 5k+ Matches, I am gonna assume that you are very experienced in pvp, and as such, you will most likely get teamed up with those level of experience.

UNLESS, there is no sufficient pvp population pool playing at that time.

This will be the key in finding out if MMR is really flawed or just an “get good” issue.

5k+ matches eh? That’d be less than 1% if they are still around. I mean how much more elitism should be displayed in this forum before some of you get your butt soaked in reality that many of us do not play this game as a job?

Getting new people in the game is good; it’s not bad. And that’s exactly every single online game wants and needs. That said, for leagues, ANET probably should have created a barrier of entry – Rank 80 would have sufficed.

Sure if it helps… I tried different classes where I thought I was decent with. But same result no matter what. Stuck in emerald. As someone who was legendary last season, got 2k+ tpvp wins and all class champion titles except revenant.

Hmm… I am guessing maybe the pvp population at those times might be really low so they match you with baddies just to fill your roster. I mean that could be 1 thing.

What were your experiences, are your teammates really bad or the opposing team is really good?

I mean no offense, I am generally curious coz If Anet said MMR works by placing you on the same skill as your teammates, 5k worth of games is a lot meaning, you are already an experienced pvper so your teammates should be prolly the same If that’s what the Matchmaking intended to do.

If this isn’t the case, I do not even think there is proper Matchmaking

Had both experiences. Either opposing team really good or own team playing brainless and wasting an easy win. I play many hours a day currently and my experience is roughly the same during primetime and off primetime (tried 4h in the morning, too)

1.5K games, but then I’ve only really been playing PvP properly of the last 6 months. Before that I had played about 30 games. Currently in T2 Emerald, and that was really hard work. I would not say I’m a bad player but I’d like to think I’m better than average as I don’t normally lose game all that much till the last 3 day of league play. Was on a lose 3 win 2 merry go round. Finally broke that. Lets hope it continues and many I’ll make it into sapphire this time around, as I didn’t have much time to play last time around.

It does actually, MMR was not reset thats why bad players were only facing bad players. Now that MMR is set, everyone is fighting via divisions

Being experienced at PvP does not mean being good at PvP, nor does being inexperienced mean you are bad. A player who started at the beginning of season 1 can be just as good as a pro-ranked player, if they came in with good skills and learned the unique elements of GW2 PvP. A player who started at launch and PvPs constantly could still be awful if they lack the tactical mindset and manual dexterity to perform at a high level. Number of games played proves nothing.

The problem is they have deliberately, it would seem, designed matchmaking to be uneven. Not one game I have played has had a losing score over 400. So the outcomes already decided before the match starts. Whoever concocted this system epitomises the notion of insanity. Or has never even played the game.

LOL so true. With no matchmaking, and completely random selection of players, you’d at least get an occasional fair and challenging game. ANET your efforts are a bigger fail than if you hadn’t interfered with the team decision making at all.

Absolute NONSENSE.

When playing a game or doing an activity for long periods of time, you unconsciously absorb the skill and knowledge of said activity. At a high level(or any level!), you can be good individually but you will always fail if you won’t have a good team behind you.

I mean no offense either. However, I am kittened and, probably, you are not. My first match this season was a win. It was a semi-decent match. I queued in pretty much as soon as ranked arena became available to queue in. It was a semi decent match considering how bad the score spread between teams have been. I played my engi. screen below. kitten match had 3 druids and 4 engis. So, next match I switched to my necro. We got matched to Wakkey’s duo. kitten went downhill from then and after two days it was unrecoverable for me and was totally unfun.

Now, that I have totally stopped queuing into ranked, I am having much better matches in unranked with people who actually understand how to rotate. I played 6 unranked today and I was paired with pretty decent folks in my team or in opponent teams. If the sewer moves kitten to a place where I don’t tread, I have no complaints.

When playing a game or doing an activity for long periods of time, you unconsciously absorb the skill and knowledge of said activity.

Wrong. You CAN absorb those skills, playing for longer makes you more LIKELY to be a better player, but it is not a 1:1 relationship. A new player that has higher natural abilities, especially if he comes in with skills from other, similar games, can be superior to a veteran player who just lacks that natural talent.

There is some correlation between “matches played” and “player skill,” bhut it is by no means an exact science.

At a high level(or any level!), you can be good individually but you will always fail if you won’t have a good team behind you.

True, which is why those impacted by poor match-making feel that they are fighting an uphill battle, while those blessed with an enhanced matchmaking pool feel that there is no problem here.

Trust me, I have over 2000 games. I KNOW what I’m doing.

But I can’t trust you, because you seem to believe that having played 2000 games means that you know what you’re doing. You may know what you’re doing, you probably do, but playing 2000 games by no means guarantees it.

Agreed. Ohoni what you are saying is absolute nonesense. It requires time to know how to counter classes, depending on the meta too. People cried and cried over mesmers because everyone said they are hard to fight, Quickest way to counter them is to play them which again REQUIRES TIME.

5k games is a lot of games dude, I have no idea if someone still sucks so bad after playing these number of games.

What good is having the natural TALENT to shoot 3-pointers, when you don’t have the SKILL to read the ball game and get open for a shot?

Talent is MEANINGLESS if you don’t have the knowledge/experience to utilize it.

Nope. I mean, there’s a little truth to what you say, but where you go wrong is in painting it in such absolute terms. Time does HELP you to learn these things, but some people can play for months straight and not fully grasp them, while others might only play a few games and pick up what they need to know, particularly if the latter players have prior experience in other games, watches tactics videos, checks tactics posts, etc. If a really talented player comes in with the learned experience of previous players, he can potentially metabolize that information way faster than a less talented player could take to process it himself.

5k games is a lot of games dude, I have no idea if someone still sucks so bad after playing these number of games.

I’m betting there are at least a few 5K match players out there that are no better than some 1K match players. Hell, I would put gold down on a bet that there are at least some players with under 100 matches that can perform better than players who have 2K matches.

What good is having the natural TALENT to shoot 3-pointers, when you don’t have the SKILL to read the ball game and get open for a shot?

Nothing, but it’s easier to acquire the skill when you have the talent then it is to fake the talent on learned skill alone.

Talent is MEANINGLESS if you don’t have the knowledge/experience to utilize it.

And nobody is saying that it does, just that total matches played do not indicate the presence of either.

I have atm played 589 matches.

I didn’t play much PvP before Season 1, and then it was only in groups of 3+ people because frankly playing solo holds no appeal for me. I like playing with my guildies, and that was also what I did when the Season came around last year.

I don’t know how much I was carried in Season 1 as mostly we were playing as two weaker guys and a pretty good friend. He won us some matches, but I guess even he wouldn’t have been able to carry two total noobs. So honestly I can’t say anything for that.

I got to the last tier of ruby last season. That’s pretty average I guess. The people I played with were a mix of ruby and diamond. When the new season started, we finished Amber in a few hours in the first night. The second night we made the first 2 tiers of Emerald. Everything was ok, lost some, won some, had some short wining streaks.

Then on Thursday/Friday night we started getting randoms that were … difficult. They ususally didn’t play with the team and started flaming as soon as things didn’t look good. We lost more than we won, and then the randoms started getting really nasty and it went downhill from there.

Finally I just wanted another win, but then managed to get one more tier in Emerald last night. By solo-queueing, and suddenly also with competent team mates. I don’t know what is the difference between team-queue and solo, but it was so refreshing to actually have people that talk strategy before the match, who defend points and try to rez you when you are downed.

It didn’t stay that way unfortunately, but at least every second match in solo-queue you lose because the other team is better, and not because your team is bad

I’m certainly not the best pvp player there is. I make mistakes. Sometimes I could have used my skills better, sometimes I should have rotated/anticipated better. Sometimes I attacked the wrong player, ran away where I should have fought or fought where I should have run. I try to get better with every game.

I know I could be better, but what do I do…

…if my teammates ignore downed enemies instead of killing them?
…two people cap close bc they can?
…one goes creep on Niflhel and leaves the team 3 vs 4 in mid at the start of the match?
…four people cap mid and I’m the only one rotating back to close to hold the cap?
…3 guys each run into mid alone to feed the 4 enemies who camp there?

At least I’m Emerald now. I know a guy who was easy Diamond last season and is still stuck in Amber because he started this season a few days late.

What I want to say: no matter how experienced you are, once you are paired with the kind of people that flame constantly, give up before the match is lost, or/and don’t know the basics of pvp gameplay you have a serious problem trying to get back into the good graces of the match-making. Then it’s not about your skill anymore, but about the lucky draw.
