I was inspired by an interesting combat log entry that showed I was hit by a Thief skill called “Heartseeker”, for about 8900 damage. What I wanted to possibly discuss, was if there might be room for fine tuning here. Depending on my build as an Elementalist, I’m not entirely sure which kind of stat or -better- stat combination might be the best choice to encourage myself and fellow elementalists to look forward to future encounters involving thieves. Both your professional and amateurish opinions are very welcome. Also I am relatively curious, regarding general game mechanics and as a newbie to the game as many others, how far up damage can actually go. For example, could you get hit by an 11000 heartseeker attack too? Or maybe some other skill? How about a hidden elementalist skill of comparable damage, if it actually exist (it must have eluded me though, in such unlikely case).

If thief is so OP, QQ and other bullkitten- start play him! Srsly I more like to see thief spam, than mesmer/warrior/guardian spam. For me thief is most balanced class at moment. Weak ground skills, huge dmg but weaknest HP, mobility- no some OP healing (guardian), creazy mass push off (guardian), army of clones (mesmer) or 10 imobilize skills at 30s CD (warrior).

I’m assuming this was by a single attack, yes? Becuase the game adds up the damage from various damage sources once you die (aka. you took xyz damage from 3 Heartseekers).

Anyway, 8900 sound extremely high even for Heartseeker. The only possible way it could have reached that high is if:

1. You yourself play a glass-cannon build, ergo have very low Toughness levels.
2. You were under 25% health at the time (because heartseeker does more damage the less health you have). This would also mean that despite the big number you never really took that much damage as you wouldn’t have that much health.
3. The Thief was specced especially for Heartseeker spam or at least was running a heavy crit-build.
4. He combined it with the “150% damage on your next attack” singet.

I’d say you’d need at least 3 out of those 4 elements to come together in order to get such a number.

That said, you could get hit by and even bigger Backstab number. It’s not uncommon for Backstab (a Dagger attack from Stealth) to reach 5 digits against other glass-cannon builds when combined with the 150% damage on next attack singet.

Well, I’m actually not a glass cannon build, but had my gear completely made up of Valkyrie and Knight items, and usually I’m doing pretty fine survival-wise. So it’s definitely not 1.
I don’t think I was under 25% health either. However, I cannot really guarantee that, because I just went down in the blink of an eye (that was what actually made me look at the combat log in curiosity, to find out about the insta-kill source), and the combat log isn’t time stamped.

Edit:
Since it seems to me that Elementalists have lowest armor and hit points, so how about giving them an on par damage skill that is comparable to this? I mean why would the class having lowest armor, lowest hit points also have low (or hard to manage) damage output/combos..

Edit 2:
Lmao, I just found this %-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh5zjK7ITpQ
Now I actually don’t have any further questions I think. :-p
