Q:
Dodge Jumping
The only thing that dodge jumping accomplishes is ensuring you get the full travel distance out of a jump, while also evading. Basically, if you don’t need to jump, then there is no need to dodge jump. How often do you really need to jump in PvP, except wanting to look “cool”? Not that often. Also, the punishment for failing to dodge during your jump is potentially huge (you fail to dodge that big burst coming at you, and cannot attempt to dodge again until your jump is over). So basically, the upside is typically small to non-existent, and the downside is potentially dying, so yeah.
Another point is, you are often watching many things at once while PvPing, and don’t always get a moment to glance down at your endurance bar to see if you have enough endurance for a dodge. If you dodge jump and you have no endurance left, you’re going to only jump, and you can’t do most skills while jumping. Whereas, if you attempt to only regular dodge and you don’t have the endurance, you are still free to control your character afterwards. It’s just another risk vs. reward thing, and most top players don’t bother with the risk unless they need the jump effect of the dodge jump.

The risk of failure, and just jumping instead is almost non-existant after you do it for awhile.
It makes it much easier to move around during combat.
Maybe the benefit isn’t large enough for some people to bother, but it is still a benefit with little risk of failure if you are experienced at dodge jumping.
Whenever I fail at it, I usually don’t jump, but just do a normal dodge instead so the risk isn’t there for me for some reason. Maybe it’s the order in which I press the buttons?
There is no downside to it for me. Only an upside.
Right, I also have never jumped but just regular dodged if messing up. It is the order in which we press the keys but essentially you just hit them both at the same time.
If you dodge-jump while going up on a slope you actually cover LESS distance.
However I can’t stop doing this everytime.
The downside is that with sudden lagspikes it could mess you dodges and you end up jumping :/
What exactly is the point of dodgejumping? Do you even move further? I do it all the time when I’m screwing around, but I would never try to dodge in tPvP with a dodgejump, lol…
all is vain

Well dodging is basically like running while out of combat w/swiftness.
So in combat, you can’t jump as far because of your slower move speed (you can see this if you get in combat during a jumping puzzle, huge PITA), jump dodging lets you jump at the optimal distance.
Jump dodging even ensures the maximum jump distance potential even while out of combat, so during a jumping puzzle jump dodge can help cover distances that are harder to reach with just normal jumping. Although you can reach the same distances with normal jumping as a jump dodge, but you have to learn how far you can run off an edge before needing to jump which can be equally trick to learn.
Short Version : Jump Dodging lets you jump the furthest possible while in combat than you could otherwise.
Can’t imagine there are any spots in Spvp where it’s really THAT rewarding to do so to justify the risk in a tournament, even if you do have a 95%+ success rate.
Alright, that does make sense, thanks for the explanation.
Still, I agree with your last point. I don’t know where that would be useful in any situation, and using a jump-dodge to assist a disengage is just wasting valuable endurance.

people really just do it out of habit. Plus i’m unsure if it still functions in the same way but you used to be able to jump dodge mid immobilize (after immobilize condition had hit, before it had triggered the ‘immobilize’) and you’d still move/jump dodge.

If you ever watch someone play LoL or DotA and see them constantly pacing back n forth, it’s kind of the same thing.

This. Some people just get in the habit of dodge jumping for one reason or another and when you have 100% success with it (you will if its that habitual), then there is no reason to break the habit.
Dodge jumping has two downsides:
1. Some skills won’t activate during the dodge, because you will count as being mid-air. You can test this with many signets, which simply won’t activate while dodge jumping and only activate after your dodge is over, whereas they will activate instantly if you dodge normally during the dodge animation
2. Sometimes you can get hit right after the jump and right before the dodge (there’s a very slight delay between the jump and the dodge when dodge jumping).

The delay is pretty much the same as in between the two taps of the movement key you press in order to dodge.
