Does Unranked actually make use of MMR?

I’ve seen differing answers on this from people. The match quality I’m used to getting in Unranked seems to suggest the game makes little/no effort to pair based on anything other than getting the quickest queue possible. Can someone confirm this? I’m a consistent Legend ranked player (not that that implicitly means anything), but it feels like I’m playing with a bunch of Ambers/Emeralds when I compare match quality to what I’m used to in Ranked.

Thanks!

Unraked or Ranked pvp player base population is low.Cause that MM system no matter what setting cannot and is not working. It pairs you up with next aviable players that are online in quene.

I was feeling a bit screw-loose so I…checked myself in.

I am normaly a conmon ruby soilder (except this season because time problems) and when i go in unranced it is nearly all the time a guatanted win – and it isn’t uncommon that i have to remind my team to fight on point.

I hope mmr doesn’t count or i would have a horribly low one!

MMR is separate between the two game modes, but it is used in both. If you don’t play one for a long period of time, your rating may decay, resulting in poor matchmaking when you enter it again. Seasons tend to cause this.

That’s an incorrect conception that people keep using. There’s absolutely no evidence to back up that low population reflects poor matchmaking, or poor mmr, or poor anything. In fact, there’s more evidence that suggests an increased population makes queue times slower due to server lag, bad matchmaking algorithms in a bigger pool, etc.

@OP
Everyone and their grandmothers reached Legendary status because they grinded their 300+ games to do so. It got to the point that Legend status means zilch. You’re literally playing with Sapphire/Ruby level players.

MMR used to play a key role in matchmaking. W/L ratio used to directly reflect what your MMR was but the current system does so poorly at governing MMR, that mmr has gotten incredibly inaccurate. To answer your question, matchmaking still uses it to govern who plays with who – but there’s a lot of other factors involved also so, it doesn’t mean it’s picking players anywhere near your level at all.

That’s not how any of this works. Matchmaking algorithms don’t “lag” or somehow become worse just because the list of players increased.

Matchmakers work better with bigger populations because they have more players to work with.
The matchmaker is trying to find 10 players with similar skill rating to put together. The less people in queue the less likely the MM is to find 10 similar players and as such the matchmaker has to expand it’s tolerance until it can fill the match.

Bad matchups occur when the MM has to increase it’s tolerance so far as to create teams that are no longer within similar skill levels.

Note that not all blowouts are caused by the matchmaker, as many other factors can cause those, such as team comp, player synergy, and the state of the player in that particular match.

That’s exactly why MMR is so inaccurate. The items you just listed has such a huge influence on matches that it obliterates the algorithms you posted. There’s zilch measurement in personal skill for MMR to work efficiently. The matches are not static enough for Glicko to work.
(not that mmr is a direct factor to Matchmaking, it’s just one of many factors; I’m just making a point :p)

I withdraw my statement that higher pop would lower queue times. It was something seen during the Stronghold beta weekend but that was likely a server issue.

There’s otherwise no evidence that shows higher player populations reflects lower queue times in GW2 history. Only when Anet deliberately reduced queue times did we see a consistent 10s queue. It caused unhealthy games/matchmaking, so they reverted it. Even at HoT launch queue times have been relatively the same.

Unranked is generally a steam roll between leagues…

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.
