Does a Skill Work If you Press it Just Once?
You know, i’ve noticed that too but thought it was just me, or one of my new skill I was trying to use in combination with another.
Rank: Top 250 since Season 2

I have the same issue on thief, I prefer to press buttons once in certain situations so as not to risk extra inputs being queued. However often times my inputs aren’t executed.
This usually happens to me when I am attempting to use a skill when the animation of another is ending.
It’s very frustrating when I know I pushed a button and notice it doesn’t activate a half second after it should have. I end up losing so much time and missing opportunities due to some kind of input issue.
I wish I could say it’s hardware, but I never have this problem in other games I play with my same mouse and keyboard.
Norn Guardian – Aurora Lustyr (Lv 80)
Mia A Shadows Glow – Human Thief (Lv 80)
I have been having this same problem recently as well.
Was also thinking the issue was at my side but it happens quite alot and it sucks :/
Same issue here, has been the cause of countless deaths
Long Live [ASAP] Zerg: The greatest guild that ever was or will be.
I’ve been having issues most notably with using Doom directly after Death Shroud, it lags like crazy; have to spam Doom to get it to go off; and often times it’s too late.
Warlord Sikari (80 Scrapper)
I love when I hit a stun break and nothing happens… So I start mashing it until it responds. For extra frustration, when shadowstep finally responds, it sends me back to the original location.
Its what’s known in the trade as …. dazed.
Having the same issue, very frustrating.
Yup same issue but I have began double, triple, and quadruple clicking to make skills work.
Is there a way to stop a skill being “queued” in the case that it lags? I have noticed that there’s a bit more of a delay than usual, and it’s ultra frustrating when my character decides to use a certain skill after the opportunity for its use has passed.

Same here. I basically have to spam the skill for it to work even once.
On my necro, I’m finding that I need to press a skill several times rapidly to ensure that it activates. If I press it once, it’s not queued up…this has often been my downfall since before the patch I was used to a “press it and have faith it will work” approach.
Does this happen to you as well?
Edit: Only for skills with cast times.
Actions have a queue system, where if multiple skills are pressed in succession, some skills have priorities over others and will cancel the others. Heal, for example, will usually cancel out any other abilities in queue.
So yes you do have to spam the skill if you want to 100% ensure it will work right then and there. Otherwise if you rotate through a bunch of skills pressing them just once each, the skills will make your character think and change priority left and right, and you’ll just be sitting there casting and doing nothing.
It works with other classes though. Thief skills have a teeny tiny bit of casting lag, but they are all pretty equal in priority. So, if you press thief skills once and “have faith”, they usually happen in the exact sequence that you pushed the skills in.

This.
On my ranger, LR have been very unresponsive lately.

But obviously something has changed after the patch. I’ve been playing for 3 years since beta and I know what it felt like before. Before, I could press a skill button while an existing one was casting, and immediately after, the skill whose button was pressed would activate.
I’m not talking about pressing 1,2,3,4 buttons successively. I’m talking about pressing just one button once. And something has definitely changed after the patch. I noticed it within 5 minutes of logging on that day.
There has been a lot more lag since the patch hit…I would think the delay is due to that
It works if you click just once but because the game’s combat is so multi layered you often get ‘intervened’ by other actions like dodging, channelling, moving, skills canceling casting of one another’s etc. so sometimes you have to press a few times to make sure. And there is the usual latency problem.

Ye, that’s really annoying and got me killed alot..
If you’re not lagging then it should for most skills that don’t require a target.
This is not lagg , because i have this problem just with the second greatsword skill in guardian .
Then its definitely lag.
I am with the others. This has occurred with Signet of Stone, LR and Hunter’s shot most noticeably.
I press the ability and nothing happens. I am not lagging, I have normal ping etc. The ability just fails to respond to the input. If I press a button immediately after it’ll work fine.
I would argue that this is a bug or potential server side lag, but client side UI responds properly by indenting the button when pressed (the actual ability just doesn’t respond) so be interesting to see what it is.
Necro skills are turtle pace and it sucks. Most have probably never noticed, but listen to the background to ANY Necro streamer. Their skill clicks sound like a snaredrum roll b/c they have already ‘adapted’ to this tragic fact.
i play from NZ and normally have 200+ ping with 70-100fps. this not an issue I’ve been encountering on any of the four classes I play, warrior, engineer, guardian, and ranger. I never click skills and only use hot keys.
currently a Boyfriend main :P

You need to get used to cast times, if you cast all four marks too quickly for example some may not be queued. It’s been a while since I played necro so I know my explanation is a little crappy but basically if you want to practice it I’d advise using the fast cast aoe option. You’ll notice if you press all four marks immediately after each other one or two may not get queued but if you line up your rhythm so it fits with the after cast you only need to press the button once.
I’ve noticed some players on YouTube spam the mark button until it appears but that’s slower than what you’re capable of. It’s possible to queue multiple marks so that they go down in the fastest time possible.
Edit: just saw your reply to another post lol I guess this isn’t what you were talking about

Skill queuing has been borked since the spec updated, and there are several threads on the bugs forum about it, like this one.
I know what’s being refered to here. I’ve experienced it too at certain points in the past. For whatever reason there’s a failure of the server to recognize the reaction of skill activations on the clients end. You can even capture video of it where you clearly see the “press” on the icon with no follow through.
Other causes can be skill activation while in the air or traveling over uneven terrain
Just report it. It’s a current issue. It’s not lag, it’s not something that has always been in the game, it’s not user error.
I have same issue, but having it for longer time already, not jsut from this patch.
Yes, this annoying thing pre patch. who ever fix this you have my sincere gratitude.
Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.
I though it was a problem on my end as well, i can see now it is not…
This has been happening for a looooooooong time.
Basicly, you push a skill and absolutely nothing happens. You see the actual button “press” as if the skill is about to be activated, but it doesnt do anything, dont go on cooldown and dont trigger. Sometimes you have to press multiple times for it to finally work. It can happen when there is no lag otherwise.
And yes, the Necro actually seems to be particularly afflicted with this, long activation times on pretty much all skills and double clicks (like wells) doesnt exactly help.

Well if the icon is flashing this sounds a lot like skill lag (different from fps lag) it’s a problem on anet’s side not your computer.

Of course its a problem on Anets side, I know that.
Its the skill queue server that breaks – it doesnt react to you pushing the buttons. Whether that is your client not sending the command properly or the server not doing anything on its end I have no idea. What’s pure clientside (ie the “button press”) is obviously working, so I suspect its actually client failure to send to server.
Its a different issue from the blinking skill lag, where it just keep flashing. I suspect that is your client properly sending something and get an OK from server to do the skill, but doesnt actually do it and complete the skill activation (basicly, stuck in skill limbo).
But without knowing how a skill activation works client->server->back to client its just guessing.
I really wish Anet would investigate it, but it will probably just ebb out like the lag investigation. Its laggy, we know, we dont know how to fix it.
I’ve also noticed more of this since the new patch. I hadn’t noticed as much on my ele due to skill spam, but on my warrior, less skills means I notice more when my rush doesnt go off, or my whirl. I hope they fix this delay, as I can’t be lagging so much more since patch.
ya sometimes it happens but i dunno maybe lagg? or i maybe pressed button while jumping
In theory, the skills activation should work something like this: client recognizes the key press, sends the information to the server, server acknowledges the skill, it executes it and sends back the “skill executed” info to the client. You can check it when you get heavy lag (usually prior to a d/c), if the communication with the server is down you can see that the skill starts blinking when you press it but ofc it isn’t executed so it remains in “blinking mode” indefinitely until communication with the server is up again.
To the thieves, I noticed this while playing some pve with s/p with withdraw as heal.
If I try to use withdraw during the autoattack chain, I need to spam it on average almost 3-4 times before it’s acknowledged, it’s easier to notice this due to slower sword autoattacks. BUT, if I queue withdraw during the pistol whip execution, I only have to press it once and it’s always correctly queued and executed.
Could it be that it’s because of skills with aftercast timers/animations? PW doesn’t have them, while all sword autoattacks have them.

It’s definitely possible. But if so, it’s a new issue introduced by the patch.
I’ve been having horrible lag in spvp as well as in some pve maps since the last patch.
I have a feeling after the recent patch, Anet has reduce the overall servers of all game modes in order to open up space for the new stress test map. Well, at least now you guys know how OCX/SEA players have to endure daily.
+1
Also wvwvw skill lag retuned after the 23th.
In Both GW1 and GW2, the ‘skill queue’ has just 1 skill. Any additional presses will replace the next skill queued.
Many skills have an Aftercast Delay too.
So, during an aftercast delay, additional presses will just change the queued. Once queued skill is activated, you can queue another skill.
Because of this, in some cases, for some players, it may seem nothing is happening, what in actuality you are massing keys while aftercast delays are still taking place, and merely re-queuing the same skill. A higher latency will this more likely to happen.

If this was the problem, then pressing a skill key just once in the aftercast of another skill should immediately queue it up and will get executed without fail when the previous skill completes.
However, this does not happen since after the patch.
P.S: I was a GW1 player as well, so I know what’s supposed to happen and I also know when something is wrong and it’s not working like it should.
It is a bug, end of story.
Stop wasting your time trying to explain otherwise. It has been report in the bug forum with million other bugs.
You can only hope that most of it will be fixed on Tuesday if that is the updated day.
Ive been having similar skill lag. My ping also jumps around between 80 and 700 ms. This only happens in GW2. I’m fine when I play any other game.
