Does anyone else laugh at the Esports QQ
I decided to take a free year for myself before heading into university with an attempt to do something esports related. I picked this game because it was advertised as an esport game.
You might not take esport seriously, that’s alright and it’s completely in your right. There are also people that don’t take chess seriously, that doesn’t stop the world from having competitive chess players, tournaments with books on how to improve etc etc.
I don’t see the point on berating or belittling people that have other views than you do though.

It’s disappointing that the game was advertised as something it is not. I became interested in the game after seeing the ESL showmatch cast by djWheat. And Arena Net plainly used the “esports” term to sell boxes, even though they knew it would not be esports ready at launch. As such, I don’t laugh at the folks that are disappointed that the term that Arena Net used to describe its game clearly failed to describe the item they purchased at launch.

why dont you play a game that’s already established as an esport rather than trying to be good at a game with no population or competition?
I have a feeling the desperate ones like satar and follidus and those guys just couldn’t cut in games with true skill rankings and massive populations so they come here beat the 5 competitive teama that still play and think they are good and that if this game blew up they would have some advantage lol.
this game will never be an esport so why are you still here if you only have a year?

I’m not in a desperate position nor have I lost faith in arenanet. If I didnt think think that this game would have a shot at esports I would have abandoned it, just like your recommendation.
I picked gw2 because I played gw1 when I was younger and remember that it used to have all the esports features required, I assumed they’d deliver in the same way for gw2 (which they still have a chance to do )
Actually some of us like the fact that gw2 you can just enter and its a level playing ground.
Some of us dont want click to move, isometric starcraft esports.
We like MMO controls, Mechanics etc.
Play wow etc? rather not level up just to pvp in that pos game.
I personally don’t care all that much about if GW2 becomes an eSport or not, but I am concerned about the general sPvP population right now which is IMO disproportionally small considering what is IMO a fairly fleshed out PvP game (in terms of gameplay not current PvP systems in place). I think most complaints about GW2 sPvP is more geared toward this than eSports viability.
The amount of people who actually make significant amounts of money in eSports is tiny relative to the playerbase and quite disproportional with the amount of complaints seen on the forums. There really aren’t many complaints about things like “hey, where can I watch some pro videos” or whatever, because nobody watches these things (look at stream numbers… viewership is abysmal). It’s more complaints about balance, queue times, etc.
Although I do feel for people who bought the game believing the game would be eSports-ready at release, I’m not sure if ANet ever actually stated it would be ready (at release that is). Although on the flipside I think it was obvious to everybody from day 1 that the correct pvp systems were not in place and it was woefully underdeveloped as a whole. These people could’ve simply got their money refunded once they saw this, but they didn’t because they had faith and thought they could get a leg-up on the competition if they stuck with it and got ahead of the curve while everybody else waited for these pvp systems to be put in place.
It is much much easier to get ahead of the curve early on when nobody takes the game seriously and dominate early tournaments than it is to be competitive in games whose tournament scene has matured and is oversaturated with top players like SC2. This is the incentive for these teams to stick it out. It is also fairly likely that if GW2 ever does become big and there are big cash prizes and sponsorships involved that the top teams you see today will not be the top teams you see in the future.
If you bought this game just because they labeled “esports”, you should probably re-evaluate your life to be honest. IMO I already got my 60 dollars worth of gaming so I have no reason to be angry, and more FREE updates in the future as well. Why would I be mad just because I can’t make my “dream” of becoming a pro mlg 360 no scope gw2 player.
Really? I am currently playing SC2, because I appreciate watching the pros play and trailblaze, while I copy their builds and struggle to make the Masters league. I have no dream of being a pro gamer. I dream of games, like SC2, where I can play at my leisure, improve, and yet still enjoy even competition no matter my skill level.
My hope for GW2 — given that it was advertised as an “esport” — was either a casually competitive scene for a not-super-serious 5-man to work our way up the ladder or a strong solo queue ranking system if that did not work out. Neither panned out. My 5-man got too serious because the lack of competition meant that our average team could be a top team if we tried a bit harder. And there’s zero support on the horizon for solo players.
So, just because the game might have 60 bucks worth of content for one person does not make it insane or unjustifiable to purchase a product based on a specific representation. You don’t have to be a burn out college kid pinning your hopes and dreams on a future pro gamer career to want to play an “esport.” I’m pro in something very different than video games, that is much more lucrative, but I still love competition and can be disappointed that this game was a bust, no?
I think the whine is overdone.
If esports are what you want I understand that you want to see it developing towards that goal. However every-patch the angry tears that fall, hell every-day the tears that fall.
Ridiculous.
However I do want to see GW2 have a better competitive scene, because it is fun to improve, or see others better than yourself and improve based on their play or even losing to them. Whether or not you are within that playing field.
why dont you play a game that’s already established as an esport rather than trying to be good at a game with no population or competition?
Its much much easier to go “pro” in a game if you start playing right as that game comes out.
Attempting to go pro at any of the established esport games that have been out for years would take a heck of a long time, especially if you have no previous experience in the game type genre. (going from wow glad to league of legends pro, as an example)
People are dissapointed about lack of esports because it was said it would be an esports game. Its like expecting cake on your birthday and not getting any.

You failed. Don’t worry, kitten happens in life.
Pick another game (sc2 next expansion will come soon, for example) or go to the university.Nice! You added real value to this topic with your ignorant comment and gave me a nice laugh.
Don’t worry, kitten happens in life. Blow some steam off or get out.
@topic:
Advertise as e-sport, release a late-alpha material, then take several months to add pretty much nothing. There is absolutely no reason to be angry, is there? If you bought this game just because they labeled “esports”, you should probably re-evaluate your life to be honest. IMO I already got my 60 dollars worth of gaming so I have no reason to be angry, and more FREE updates in the future as well. Wow how condescending can you be? Just because your standards and expectations are low, dose not mean that other people expected more (especially with their advertisement that their focus would be on PvP).
Lets see what they advertised shall we? They said this was going to be a revolutionary mmo, and specifically said that they were trying to make this game into an “e_sport”.
Now if you played Guild Wars 1 you would know that all the systems were in place for “e-sport” and actually were many tournaments that had large cash prizes, the largest one had a 100,000$ payout for the victor if i remember correctly.
Players with that knowledge would expect guild wars 2 to have the same BASIC pvp infrastructure…would they not?
Well a-net lied and gave us an unpolished pvp game lacking the bare essentials to harbor any sense of a pvp population.
-One game mode
-No private servers (gws1 had guild halls, same thing as private server)
-No matchmaking/rating
-Only 3 maps? (adding one map a few months later)
-No obs
-Segregated PvP lobbies making the population even lower than it already seems
Now its 2013 after several months of updates and patches what has a-net given the pvp community? yep nothing
So no your argument is invalid and all i see is someone wallowing in self gratitude in the delusion that you got your 60$’s worth.
Me personally i don’t care much about the game, but seeing someone so arrogantly put down other people’s perspective, because they feel they have been “satisfied” with the game and cant see the obvious flaws just makes you seem like a bigot.
E-sports develops organically from pvp being popular enough.
Im concerned that spvp isnt popular enough, and that indirectly effects the esports crowd as well

That’s the truth rely, esports business model works like this:
1) game becomes mad popular
2) streaming the game generates a huge following
3) big tech-based businesses see potential to appeal to a demographic of people who are technology driven.
4) Businesses sponsor tournaments to appeal to the game’s viewer demographic, organizations host them for add revenue.
5) Domino effect occurs: game receives promotion and gets more players, as casual player base goes up, stream viewer base becomes stronger, as stream viewer base becomes stronger, pro players can have the means to go to more tournaments and ect…
I mean if arenanet could host like a $50,000 tourney, it could theoretically kickstart the process, but it’s rely circumstantial; remember everyone laughed at the idea of League of Legends becoming an esport back before the s1 $100k tournament prize at dreamhack in 2009.
AN needs to make some friends…

Coincidentally, everyone laughed at it because it was ridiculously unpolished, so let’s hope there’s still hope for GW2 PvP with its current state.

I’m not laughing at GW2, I’m laughing at the people who play GW2 solely for the fact that the game came with the label “E-SPORTS”.
I swear, certain individuals in this forum sound as if they are living on the streets desperate for gw2 to go “esports” so they can make money.
Sorry but I can’t help myself from laughing when I even hear the word “esport”.
Remember kids, games are for fun.
Agreed wholeheartedly. The whole thing is more sad than tv ‘reality stars’ are.
