I’ve seen so many people saying “I’ll hold close”…only to get decapped by a decap engi. Unless you have stability uptime like a warrior or guardian, or you have ample CC like a necro who can condi bomb a decapper, or it’s a map like foefire with large points or like kyhlo where you can stand against the rails, please don’t call yourself a bunker.

Otherwise openly tell your teammates “I can’t hold close if a decapper comes”. Be honest. There are plenty of useful roles you can fill. That way a team can decide on a better bunker fulfilling the above qualities. Or roll a decap engi themselves.

Edit: The reason for this post is I was in a kyhlo match with two engis on each team. I assumed that they had a decapper and asked who could defend close. One of the engis said he would hold close and while an engi is not a bunker, I assumed he would hug the rails or something to prevent the decap long enough for help to arrive.

A short while into the match, I found our point capped by the decap engi with a useless 1v1 going on at close. Even when our guardian joined, the decap engi was still on point. I asked how it happened and our engi replied “Decapper. It happens”. No it doesn’t! There are builds to counter decap engis. They have to be used!

I was so kittened, I logged out and rerolled my own decap engi, ran to close and had the point neutral within 10 seconds. Of course, capping it would take a much longer time, but then I was able to decap their node so it balanced out.

But their lead was still too much. And all because a person said they could “hold” close when they couldn’t.

Unfortunately, unless you’re 2 v 1 a decap, just about every class is still liable to get decapped by a good engi. I play a Sc/Sh & Hammer bunker guard with SYG and traited Virtue of Courage and I still can get decapped by good engis if they stick with it long enough.

The number of knockbacks available to engis simply outpaces the amount of stability any class can bring and some knockbacks have no telegraphs (such as flamethrower).

If I were dev for a day, I would at least put some casts with tells onto some engi knockbacks so that there’s a decent amount of counterplay for 1 v 1s. This will allow good players to stand a chance with well-timed dodges and use of cooldowns without making a decap engi too weak to pull off their role.

Noone can avoid getting decapped vs a good decap engi. The only real way to counter it is:

Push for their home at the same time and /or win mid fast enough so you can rotate ppl home and zerg him down.

AR helps them bunker, but that only makes a difference against some builds. I’m guessing you play necro, lol.

Surviving alone doesn’t really help win a game unless you’re standing on a node you control or are preventing someone from capping a neutral node. If engis couldn’t knockback like they can, then they be just another bunker without stability and running to far would be a complete waste.

If you can prevent being knocked off and decapped from your homepoint, it doesn’t matter if you get in a deadlock fight and are unable to kill them since you still control the point.

The only Necromancer that can decap any good is Terrormancer and they have to be terrible to ever lose a 1 on 1.

So a terrormancer beats a warrior or a PU Mesmer, right?
