Hey WhiteCrow – if you want a good non meta build, depending on what profession you play i may have something for you if you’re interested.
I’ve come to the realization that it isn’t so much other players I’m competing against, but the various flaws and glaring imbalances many of us agree are present (I know some feel PvP is fine; to each their own). Each necessary interrupt, each stunbreak, critical dodge moment, the well-timed Elites, I don’t know .. It all seems so simple and routine. There’s no room for anything else.
I’m quite fine with the pvp mechanics that this game is. There’s no designated Tank/Healer/Dps player and items are based on engagements and coordination. Because of that, I think this game delivers one of the best PvP experience that i’ve had in any MMO.
It just lacks immersion and in some cases, competition.
The immersive elements in the game’s pvp that I like are the reward tracks. I feel there are not enough pvp exclusive rewards like there was at launch. At launch I owned skins that no other PvE player could obtain. When I received a certain skin I was estatic.
That and the level progression system during launch. It really didn’t mean anything other than playing time but it was definitely a goal to reach, another immersive element to the pvp experience.
There should be a long term PvP specific reward track for players, similiar to how PvP Legendaries are in PvE. Maybe a combination of Reward Track boxes you need to place in the Mystic Forge to unlock a specific PvP Precursor.
The poor leaderboard system is one of the biggest competitive elements that this game is lacking on a casual player level. Beyond the reward track elements, the PvP system doesn’t have an end-game other than Tournaments play.
Just Conquest?
Having the same gamemode means a lack of PvP diversity. ArenaNet tried changing Conquests Map’s functionality to reflect that of say, a capture the flag gamemode, but it’s still the same Conquest experience.
Stronghold changes this diversity up but it’s only a matter of time until that mode gets stale as well. I feel there’s a few elements they could add (buy amulets/gear like moba?) that could spice things up drastically.
TL:DR
Game lacks immersion and competition out side of Tournament play. Leaderboards needs fixing. Add pvp specific precursors as long term rewards. They could add a more moba feel to Stronghold (build gear/amulets/traits) so that it becomes a more interesting gamemode.

I’ve tried quite a few non-meta setups, but I’m always interested. I run mainly Warrior and Necro. One is more forgiving for non-meta than the other.
