Haven’t played mine in months. Ele is getting a little boring and warrior although it’s fun, its not an engi. So which engineer spec is top dog for solo queue nowadays and how do we fair against the other classes? We mid table again?

Can’t be that bad if chaith is still destroying kids left right and centre on his in tournies etc so I have a feeling we are absolutely fine. It’s my only 80 so bout time I put some loving back towards it!

By now the only viable one is Rifle power build.

Power rifle is the most common.
I don’t engy much, but when I do, I prefer (dos equis) to run something different. I like a p/p HGH conditions build. It’s squishy, and it suck when your burn gets cleansed, but man can it be fun.

Play what you like to play. Engi is really fun post-patch, because while there’s no meta build, there are a lot of different somewhat viable builds.

My favorite picks are Grenadier burst, FT-HGH decap with celestial amulet, or FT-HGH rabid. In EU, a lot of engineer play the same rifle build with soldier amulet, but I don’t understand the role it plays: ele is better in 1v1s.

The only two viable builds in top tier PvP are overall weaker and less versatile than the old cele rifle build.

1. Soldier’s- This build is being used a lot on EU, but not NA. It focuses on getting decaps in smaller fights and generally being tanky enough to 1v1 and 1v2 comfortably. Zan from TCG uses it. You don’t do a ton of damage in teamfights, but you can sort of hold the point for a bit when needed. This build does well in most 1v1s, but condi builds will end you, since alchemy and inventions with HT, isn’t really enough condi clear, which is a weakness of engi as a whole.

2. Marauder- Chaith uses this build on NA. It focuses on doing tons of cleave damage in teamfights, but its generally weak in 1v1s unless you get the jump on someone. It also depends a lot on the RNG of elixir X, and uses double elixir S and gear shield to stay alive.

So right now the engi meta is quite rough, and you honestly have to be very good at Engi mechanically, to even make it work at all, because there really isn’t a build like the old cele rifle build, where you could be useful in every situation while doing tons of damage/CC in teamfights while being able to 1v1 almost anything. And thats because engi traitlines got changed so much, nades and backpack regen are weaker, incendiary powder in a new traitline, and overall because theives/mesmers/eles do more damage cele doesn’t have the innate tankiness to really soak up hits like it did in the past. So only ele and necro really run celestial now.

Also.. there are cheesey condi burn spam builds, but theres no point in running them at all due to passive cleanses, and the fact that 1 necromancer on the enemy team will be enough to use your own burns to kill everyone on your team

There is nothing ideal.

Depends how good you are on the class you play.

Problem with engi is that, it had many viable builds, so you didn’t see one strict build all the time, but you could see a variety of them in with every match.

Simply, but recent changes, especially to Engi, Anet pinned coffinnail to most builds leaving pretty much only one – Power Rifle, with few changes depending on personal liking.

P/P Burn engi is weak – I personally played it for a long time and enjoyed it – Anet rekt it.
Turret Engi useless – liked that build due to few reasons, one was how mad people were getting, and how it proved that people are simply silly beyond imagination.

CeleEngi – I don’t see this build anymore, and it was rare even before. Another Coffinnail granted by Anet.

By far, Warrior wasn’t a victim of silly changes, and it’s still enjoyable as was before – tho I miss my 100% burst crit in Strength line.

Nothing to even be sad about since this fact is known for a long time:
- Anet cannot do balance changes at all. Either the ridiculously power something up, or nerf it to the point, where people forget those builds completely.

They don’t understand and know how to “tone a little bit”.

It’s like, letting them in the kitchen and tell them to take a kitchen knife and cut a little bit of cheese, but instead they grab a chainsaw and cut the cheese along with the table.

Hahaha fair enough so if I’m not competing in tournies I can ideally get along fine on anything. Well I do love gs hammer warrior and I enjoy dd ele a lot also. Ill try out engi and if it’s still not to my liking I’ll just focus back on warrior and ele. Seems a win win situation eh.

So what’s the meta order like these days? Like 1 being awesome 3 being poor. Top, middle and bottom tier… Who is where?

In my slightly biased opinion:

Top Tier: Fire D/D ele, cele signet necro, D/P thief, Support Guardian, PU zerk shatter mesmer

Mid Tier: Medi/Burn Guard, Power Rifle Engi (soldier or marauder), Trap Ranger, S/D thief, Mantra Mesmer, Stone Heart Bunker Cele Ele (staff or D/D), Soldier Necro (MM or US bunker), GS/Hammer Rampage Warrior,

Between Mid and Bottom Tier: Power Ranger, Condi Mesmer, Condi Necro, Tanky Warrior (shoutbow/hambow)

Bottom Tier: Condi Engi, Fresh Air Ele, Cele HGH engi, Condi Thief, Power Wells/Lich Necro

Thats my take on the current meta, everything else thats not commonly seen ever, I can’t really give a good “tier placement”. Feel free to disgree, but based on my experiences and observations multiclassing, this is what I have noticed.

Well its quite arguable whether or not necro is/will be top tier, but since I main it I placed it there. If it doesn’t become top tier, it will be really close though. Right now theres a really good celestial build that uses signets that is overall really good in both 1v1s and teamfights, in fact it hardcounters most condi builds all together, as well as generally countering every other top tier spec 1v1, especially eles and guardians due to chill and boon corruption. Right now though the necro builds that don’t have toughness and vitality are a bit weak though, meaning that power and terrormancer are lower tier in their current state.

But celestial is really good on necro. It seems like a weird build, but it works out really well, mainly because spite gives you tons of might stacking and you have lots of sustain through life force generation. If its not top tier, then I’d say its really close. Its become quite common on NA, but I haven’t really seen much Necro at all on EU.

Trap Ranger is mainly good because it can condi bomb people in smaller fights, so the only thing they really have to fear is a cele or condi necro. In teamfights they’re a bit weaker mainly due to being easier to focus fire, but the damage is there. I’d say necro is the safest for solo queue, but ranger works fairly well, and engi can too, but only if you’re realll really good at engi.

Basically learn to manage deathshroud really well. The 2 skill in deathshroud, dark path is probably your best skill for locking someone down since with these traits, it will inflict 5 condis, including 5 seconds of chills, which is tough for people to deal with. In general most of your damage comes from deathshroud, while your other weapons serve the purpose of sustained damage, building life force, and bombing people with condi transfers, with the signet transfer being especially powerful. The main weakness of the build is lack of mobility, meaning you can’t escape a 1v3 or 1v4 situation without plague, and even then its tough, but thats a problem to every necro build and most classes that aren’t ele/thief/mesmer, so just make sure you choose your fights wisely (don’t barge into outnumbered situations). And in general you can 1v1 most classes really well as long as you have life force, but you can build it quite fast in a pinch with spectral armor, so that helps as well. Having good positioning is needed too, as people love to focus fire necros, although this build is tanky enough to handle that relatively well, just don’t go on point right at the start of a match with no life force.

I really do enjoy playing gs/hammer warrior, Dd ele (ok it’s op) and things like rifle warrior n kitten. I like warrior as its pretty kitten tanky… I just like classes I can dart around like I have add and snipe people off or rock 1-2 people in a teamfight before I go down. Always played a sub rogue in wow for example and a ww monk. Hyper strong snipe classesw. Though I’m not a fan of thief at all hahaha.

Not 100% on necro but I’ll try it. Atm my top 2 are warr and ele, I wvw and pve a lot also so baring this in mind.

Strongly disagree that power well necro is bottom tier. The dmg is extremely high and survivability is still darn good. I’ve been playing it the last week or so and absolutely love it. 1v1s aren’t a problem unless it’s a pesky thief with no LF. Many 2v1s are doable too.

I like runnign glass condi on my engi, pp + ft + elite mortar + elixir S + slick shoes. I get downed a lot, cuz glass, but its a blast to play, since I can also down people extremely fast and do long range direct combat support for my team mates via mortar.

my favorite combo is when i sneak up on someone and open with IA+pistol4+FT4+FT2 when I do this on another glass build they usually just drop, but unlike a mesmer it is tricky to pull off cuz set up + timing, they cant have their dodges up.

At 1500 range a lot of times opponnent teams lose on node long before they realize what or from where hit them or why or how my team mates refileld their health.

You can also run a power variant of this build, jsut replace p/p with something else. FT is very flexible and works well with both condis and power builds, though FT4 is less effective without high condi damage so may need to adjust.

What I listed as Bottom tier, and between Mid and Bottom Tier, the differences between those two are pretty slight, I just view those in between mid and bottom tier as slightly more viable than bottom tier. While the build I described as bottom tier can work in solo queue or casual ranked play, I don’t think they provide serious value at an actually competitive level. They may be viable, just not optimal. Meanwhile other builds that aren’t even listed, I wouldn’t even call viable.

Marauder Rifle Engi with Explosives, Alchemy and Tools, equipped with Grenades, Tool Kit and Elixir S. Your main concern is to get the drop on your foes or you’re at disadvantage. Use stealth for your approach, burst your target down. Everything else about the Engineer is otherwise somewhat outclassed by what the D/D Ele can do right now. Doesn’t mean you have to run back to your Ele though.

I don’t know much about engie, but I ran into a really strong one the other day. I got rampaged down… You can imagine my surprise, I thought only warriors had that. Regardless he/she did very well… Even without rampage. I think the class is still strong for the skilled.

i’d try a Elixir build traited too , with the Tool kit for condi support and go Full condi with pistol + shield.

Elixir kit , Flame thrower (traited for boons gain when you have a kit swapped) and Elixir X it maybe random but if you make sure you all booned up before popping the Elite ether or Rampage or tornado will be very useful.

I can’t remember the build , i set it up for a friend in the guild.

depending on the Amulet you use or runes thats your choice though on this build i picked a tanky Amulet

it provides , lots of boons , heals condis while using Elixirs on allies or self , damage source comes from the Amulet or Wrench kit If using Power instead of flame thrower.

though you’d need to trait for Elixirs then build around that.

So with Ele dd out the picture completely, engi would be a top tier class again, but as it stands Ele just does it all better. Well I can live with that considering I main Ele and warr. So I’m game for a bit of engi love in solo queue. I’m still going to try out necro and then ill compare the 2.

50/50 over necro and engi. Seems engi has fun builds them necro also with mm etc.

As an experienced engineer I’ve tried out the Marauder Rifle build, condi builds, and the Soldier Rifle build. I went back to Celestial a couple of days ago and I haven’t looked back. I’ve been able to beat all of the other engies that run Marauder Rifle, I have survivability because of Celestial Amulet, and because of the way the traits are set up now I do more damage than the last Celestial engi meta. Not to mention that if you use Mortar Kit it’s a whole lot more team oriented (combo fields and blast finishers). For example if I blast my Healing Turret with Elexir Shell and Orbital Strike that’s ~11k heal for my team. Blasting Healing Turret with Endothermic Shell gives my team a 10% damage reduction taken to them, and dropping Flash Shell is amazing for fighting on point with the blind outputs. Also if you go into Firearms and go bottom mid bottom the combination of High Caliber with Slick Shoes and grenades is amazing, not to mention that every 10 seconds when you crit you put out 2 stacks of burning which equate to just over 400 burn ticks for that extra DPS and the recharge reduction by 20% on rifle is amazing.

That’s awesome ^. I’m logging on Friday to play some. I’m sticking with my warrior and Ele as I thorougghly enjoy both. Engi and necro I’m very much undecided. As I said I play both PvP pve and wvw on my classes and I’ve seen necro is low tier in pve but high tier in PvP and looks very etertaoning with minion master and cele signet. Engi however seems solid all across the board with the only downside being the rotation looks like a major clusterkitten.

Also you mention blast finishers to give Boons etc… I’ve no idea what any of this means, how it works or how to find out the rotations LOL.

All In all I’m ele and warrior then need to try figure out engi or necro…

I have no idea how you actually survive on a cele build, let alone any build without alchemy. Mainly because HT alone really isn’t good enough condi removal in this meta, while alchemy gives you backpack regen and prot injection that boost your sustain by a longshot.

Engineer is still good. The problem is that it is completely overshadowed by elementalist (if you consider the soldier build) or thief/mesmer (if you consider the marauder build).

To some extent, but engis can do what eles do almost as well while bringing superior CC.

Who brings superior cc? The Engi?

As an experienced engineer I’ve tried out the Marauder Rifle build, condi builds, and the Soldier Rifle build. I went back to Celestial a couple of days ago and I haven’t looked back. I’ve been able to beat all of the other engies that run Marauder Rifle, I have survivability because of Celestial Amulet, and because of the way the traits are set up now I do more damage than the last Celestial engi meta. Not to mention that if you use Mortar Kit it’s a whole lot more team oriented (combo fields and blast finishers). Like I said that list was just my opinion of what works in the current meta at a competitive level, and right now for necro, you need to build tanky in order to do well for the most part. Yes some people have made power wells work, but you can’t deny that its a bit outdated right now. I have friends that have made power signet builds work much better than wells, simply because wells are quite easy to avoid when they’re not used as downcleave.

Burn Engi I do consider to be bottom tier, simply because its frail as hell and completely dependent on blowtorch and Incendiary ammo for 80% of its damage. It poses no serious threat to a coordinated team. HGH cele engi is very weak to focus fire and totally outclassed by mightstacking builds on ele and necro.

What I listed as Bottom tier, and between Mid and Bottom Tier, the differences between those two are pretty slight, I just view those in between mid and bottom tier as slightly more viable than bottom tier. While the build I described as bottom tier can work in solo queue or casual ranked play, I don’t think they provide serious value at an actually competitive level. They may be viable, just not optimal. Meanwhile other builds that aren’t even listed, I wouldn’t even call viable.

Literally just come out of this match. Rabid engi.

Still you miss out on transmute, and other good stuffs like prot injection. And while heal turret is a great skill, the mortar water field double blast seems a bit awkward to use as a basic sustain mechanism. But if it works for you, it works for you I guess.

I have to second cele engi as a great build, at least from my experience as a mid-tier player. I’ve been using juggernaut and HGH to a lot of success, and my sustain is fantastic. I play d/d ele too and honestly, not only do I have better burst healing with healing turret on my engi, but I can stack might a lot faster in a fight too. This is the build I’m using:

You could probably swap tools for inventions to get kinetic battery or adrenal implant plus streamlined kits, but I really like how bunker down works with the build, even more sustain plus damage. I’ve been nuking your average d/d cele eles with this build, btw.

Edit: I should add, something a lot of people don’t know: protection injection in alchemy still works amazingly with juggernaut, since it will proc even if you have stability. Against CC-heavy classes I end up rolling with a lot of protection uptime as a result without ever actually getting CC’d.

Basically just use the water field with blasts (such as the shield blast or detonate, although don’t alwyas detonate) or leaps (rifle 5).
