Entangle
Actually these “the roots die to 2 hits” comments are a little incorrect – as a Mesmer I have to Blurred Frenzy AND Illusionary Persona Wrack Shatter to kill a root binding me. They are tougher than some people are letting on.
skill is fine.
CD might be a little too low.
Entangle has one of the most abrupt and obvious animations in the game.
When you see a Ranger jump in to the air, try dodge rolling.
That assumes that the Ranger is standing still when he uses it. Entangle can be activated while moving, and the only animation you get is raising his arms up in the air. Not the easiest thing to see, even with standard models

That’s what I wrote and in fact it looks very similar to activation of Signet of the Wild while moving.
Why not?
- Cast time raised to 1s (from 3/4)
- Makes no difference. You can cast it while running, and animation is the same as Signet of the Wild(or very similar to it). Sure, it increase the window for dodge, but what about it? Are we going to start new hype to glue eyes to screen and wait until someone will start casting it? Problem lies not in it’s cast time.
- Recharge raised to 90s
- Anet did reduce cd to 60 second so it’ll be on pair with Rampage. I personally am happy to see that people do not stick to only one elite(Rampage) as they did previously.
- Health of roots reduced by half
- They die after being hit twice, and if I remember correctly, you can crit them. No point really.
- Line of sight requirement
- As using LoS is also part of skill and allows to outplay others while using your knowledge about environment around you, Ranger has way too many LoS required skills, so lack of LoS on Entangle is a good change of pace.
- Blockable
- And what does it change? Few classes that have access to Block skills via weapons or Aegis Boon up the sleeve. What about the rest of the classes?
In my opinion and from my experience, the reason why Entangle is bit OP as too good CC is because you have to target it to destroy. That means you lose target on ranger.
After destroying roots, you have to retarget ranger again. With it’s pet nearby and that silly bug which swaps target to pet sometimes, retargeting ranger is time consuming. In my opinion, let melees(I doubt ranged classes suffer from this in 1v1), without target lock hit root with auto attack.
Since those roots are around 2 shot, increase it’s hp/durability to be hit 3 times to not make this elite skill useless. What does it change?
Entangle stays as CC skill which work well within all aspects – good cd, good duration, and possibility of not difficult removal, which gives a fair breather for melees. With this, Rangers still have a very good Elite skill choices, one with long cd, 2nd with short one.
Sry what?
1. Bigger tells always matter. Better with different and obvious animation ofc.
2. 48 traited cd with rune of Krait is pretty strong (OP?)
3. 2 hits? On zerk mesmer I need to use BF (~ 3 auto) + 2-3 auto = 5-6 auto (if u wish to destroy root). And root is structure and can not be critically hitted (hi, condy builds!).
4. Questionable statement.
5. Some classes have blocks, other classes have invisibility or port to handle.
For me personally somewhat important 1 and 2. Still not 1st priority to fix though.

Entangle should have solid mechanics for it’s counter play.
To often will a player cleanse and get a bit of distance or kill the vine and still be immobilized.
I don’t think this is a skill being OP issue as much as QoL type polish that unfortunately nerfs the skill, but frankly is how it should have been intended since day 1.
Sure it’s a strong AoE CC type skill but that’s fine, Should be more consistent tho.

No you just hit like a wet noodle due to profession design.
Mesm sword auto attack certainly ask some buff :’(
The skill it’s self is fine….
As stated above, there are numerous ways to counter it.
To be brutally honest… If you’re going to nerf the skill then it would be best to remove it as an elite and make it a Utility skill instead.

You have to wonder at the strength of a skill when it’s used in multiple builds including non-condition centric builds – I see both power and condi builds using it. It’s Unblockable status is what needs to go in my opinion. That little aspect of it is what makes it mindlessly easy to use as it will generally always land without negative consequence.
I’ve stayed at this party entirely too long
I think a fair change would be to keep the initial roots unblockable but make subsequent root entangles blockable! I also think the roots have too much health and it should be lowered slightly!

I can agree with that, too.

I think it’s one of the best designed skills honestly. It has a very noticeable tell. It’s potent as an elite, but has many ways to counter it (killing root, teleport, condi clear) more than any individual cc has.
My only problem with it is that certain ranged weapons can’t hit the root properly. That should be fixed. Beyond that, I think it’s a well designed elite.

Or get immobed midair and it basically functions as a stun for the entire duration…

That needs to be fixed across all immobs, not just this one. Immob needs to set movement to 0, not prevent movement at all, should still be able to fall…

I agree, but the reason I mention Entangle in particular is because it’s basically the longest immob in the game, and it’s balanced around being destructible. Can’t even hit the thing with melee weapons sometimes.

At least it has a casting time yeah, AND you can’t simply cast it from 1200 range or instant cast it like Slick Shoes.
