Evade thief
What an absolutely well-made argument, truly. The evidence provided here was just extraordinary. The thesis, legendary. Truly, a masterpiece that represents the epitome of modern debate.
Your language was clear and concise. You used a variety of extremely powerful literary devices to influence the readers’ thoughts on the topic at hand (going from a singular noun to a verb describing a plurality? Brilliant!). The argument was short yet to the point.
You, sir, will have monuments built in your honor. Your story shall be told to generations of children, aspiring just to be like you, for centuries. You will become a god among mortal men, and shall be known as one of the, if not the greatest human being to have ever lived.
I dont know who to feel sorry for, this poor kid, or poor arganthium that cant attend the pax tourney :/
While there are weaknesses in his arguments, I have to agree. I wish ALL “evade” skills on abilities were blocks, I don’t like hard counters, and I can’t say that I agree with classes having easy access to vigor should have weapon-slot “evades” since they hard counter everything, and on Ranger Sword/Dagger and Thieves it can feel a bit too spammy, especially considering there is damage tied to the evades. So that’s just my 2 cents. Evades are the single largest mitigation in the game, and it shouldn’t be spammy so they have to use dodges wisely just like everyone else.
(So again, this goes for Rangers, thieves and to a much lesser extent Mesmers.)

I agree though. Having the best mobility in game while having ton of stealth acces + perma evade and boon stripping is kinda ridiculous. You can waste your best/all cooldowns on it and end up having done 0 damage. Flanking Strike is so fast and unpredictable that there’s little you can do.
I much rather have the old heartseeker spam back and backstab then this..

While I agree, its clunks. Do the evades still trigger of out of endurance? Can you just not use the attack at all? Why have dodge rolls anymore? I think the amount of sheer hidden “evades” on thieves almost every attack needs to just go away. It’s really silly. If they’re so worried about them living, give them a bit more passive survivability, but you also have to consider most thieves are “ninjalovers” who want to destroy people with little confrontation. They play glass, and should be effected negatively defensively for doing so, just like a glass Engi(SD), warrior, ele etc. Almost every glass can be easily killed if focused (by design) except Thieves because of spammable evades, and certain Mesmer Phant builds because Phant Defender = 50% damage reduction on a glass (not my favorite design). So, yes there is some merit to this whole thing.

What a pathetic useless build. You cant bunk a FoN/Khylo point if you keep spamming that #3 and moving in and out a point.
You dont offer CC to put the other guy away from the point and you dont deal any damage to make people focus you.
Everyone can easily ignore the clown using that build and it’s a 4v5 game. Good job!

I’m in a bit of a state of limbo when it comes to S/D. See, if we’re talking about Jumper’s build, I would not at all say that S/D is OP. In fact, I think that Jumper’s build is very easily counterable, and I have been able to counter it very easily myself (albeit with my own S/D build :P). That being said, I am a bit… On-edge with my own build possibly being OP, actually. Here it is: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQNAsYVlYm6OncS6E/5Eh3DyO2wqVgmdP4qV1KA-TsAA1CnIKSVkrITRyisFNKYVwECA
Undoubtedly, somebody’s bound to complain that “lol u don’t run 30 cs, ur a lozer and teh bild suckz”. However, I feel that every trait in this build is extremely useful and is used, and that this build is near unkillable. I designed it specifically myself, building on it using both mathematics as well as some strategy I’ve learned with my hobby of playing chess. It also does some surprisingly high damage, especially with boonsteal and TotC. Now, because Steal’s CD has been reduced by 10 seconds, I get to use Steal so often that I usually have fury for at least have of the total battle, and more if I can boonsteal it.
So I dunno. I’ve countered S/D easily before, but whether that’s because I was also running S/D, the S/D meta sucks, or the players suck is the real question to me. I think it might be a combination of all three.
Just to make all those thiefs that posted here feel pathetic showing the truth of this OP class:

If an X build of Thief is strong, guess who should whine/whines first? A thief. You know why? Go buy some more napkins and I will tell you.
Just to make all those thiefs that posted here feel pathetic showing the truth of this OP class:
Oh no … how truly scary perma evasion thieves are. The damage output is pitiful compared to glass or even condition damage thieves. They have no team presence, no ability to do what a good thief can do.
I think the argument here is how strong S/D flanking strike evasion is when used with a glass build. Not a troll build where you evade all day but do pitiful damage that any good player will easily survive and they will just make that thief run away when it gets low, making that whole perma evasion build completely useless in conquest.
I’m sorry but those videos don’t really prove anything other than how much of a waste it is to invest everything you can into permanent evasion.
I’m pretty sure that perma-evasion build is unintended.
It is just plain broken.
i thought “thief r op plz nerf” threads were limited to the thief forums, where there is one of them every other hour by someone who just got killed by a thief.
> people pretending the main point of the argument is the damage these thieves put out and say they do “pitiful damage” as an excuse
> also pretend the purpose of this build is to bunker points (???)
How about no? The point is that these builds are extremely hard to kill with minimal effort on the thief’s part while also dealing moderate damage with the lasting power to deny all boons in a fight. And woe if he manages to steal might off your team, time for the thief to easily kill anyone while also evading while attacking.

I’ve been running the same build for quite some time now in hotjoin and tournaments but i use assassins reward instead of the 2 ini per 10 seconds.
It’s my fav build so far by a long shot, it’s very strong in my opinion because the boon steal is riddicolous. 4 boons (2 from steal, 2 from larc strike if you chain larc into steal) stolen every 20 seconds while granting 6 to ur party is really strong, not to mention all the other boons you steal from larc strike when steal is on cooldown. Every trait in that build synergizes with each other very good, it’s overall a very strong build. But is it op? I’m not so sure, it’s strong yes but with the current condi meta it melts quite fast when it gets pressured hard by conditions because it has almost no condi removal outside of lyssa runs.
PS: i hate you for telling people this build it’s superior to jumpers in every way possible in my opinion (well maybe not in terms of raw damage because you lack 30 in CS but the damage is still really decent)… but dont use it people pls dont ^^
Edit: Oh i just realized i use a few different traits then you, like mentioned earlier i run Assassins reward as second major in acro and i also run the Daze on steal + 20% CD reduction on steal and of course 3 ini swap + S/D / S/D. I also run different utilites.

What are you on about? What kind of skills do you need to spamm flanking strike?
-3,3,3,3,3,3-2,2,2,33…forever
There are just “few” dozen s/d thieves out there and accordingly to your comment, they’re all highly skilled and the rest obviously suck.
It’s like having a build where I can spamm burning retreat every 1.5s, if I could do that not even 10 of you would be able to touch me…
Anyway as suggestion to the OP:
- tPvP>hotjoin therefore Anet won’t balance s/d thieves in hotjoin
-In tPvP they can’t eveade through aoe coming from different sources, hence they die easily
-You need to create ground zero around you, it’s possible to do it with any profession

isn’t it your fault for stacking a bunch of might when someone is spamming a boon stealing skill?
isn’t it your fault for stacking a bunch of might when someone is spamming a boon stealing skill?
Is it a guardian’s fault he stacks protection? A Greatsword warrior’s fault he stacks might on crit?
Besides gaining might is a bonus effect of boon stealing, it’s not integral to the purpose of the build.

im not saying i think 111,2222, 333 spam is great, but this player did kite them around quite a bit and he was all over the place and hard to catch. the 222 spam with heart seeker is annoying as it deals a ton of dmg with no cd.
i dont like permastealth at all or cheesy backstab techniques, as that needs not much skill, but the player in this video is good thats all i meant to say.

All that heart seeker needs is for the auto lock leap to be removed, so it goes straight forward. Getting 22222222ed around the map is just infuriating (considering the rest of us are going 2 Shift 2, 3 5, 6 dodge, 7 8 Shift 3, R, X).

Ranger evade hits like wet tissue. I wish my serpent strike/stalker strike crit for 3-4k and was spammable while stealing 2 boons at a time.
I didn’t say Ranger was superior. The thing that makes rangers so OP is that they have the more ridiculous regen/heal coupled with multiple low CD evades making them sometimes just as hard to take down 1v1 because they’re generally tougher skinned than thieves are. Not to mention you have decently high auto hits with a pet and if you spec for condi damage you’re really not shorted damage that badly for how tanky you can be.

Assuming the pet actually hits an opponent that just doesn’t move and kite it as the pet autoroots everytime it performs an autoattack.
The problem is not the weapon evades.
The problem is initiative and how there are so many traits for their regeneration completely disproportionate to the cost of the skills and how much damage they do.
I don’t think people would be complaining about the evasion spam if the skill didn’t crit for 3k so kitten often on top of the utility it already has.
I don’t think people would complain about D/P if backstab was removed and the stealth opener were made a utility or cc skill instead.
It’s the fact that you can spam such high damage skills while shutting down most opponent’s opportunities for retaliation, and disengage at will to the point where opponents can’t deny you a reset as you wear them down.
The effective cooldown of abilities for the thief is so much better. People would kill for initiative.
And the counter to that? Oh, have multiple classes or an engineer pepper the ground with aoe spam, too bad only a few select classes can sustain that playstyle while most are just out of luck if said thief decides to sit on them.
Initiative was supposed to allow you to frontload at the expense of downtime on your skills but that just isn’t the case at the current cost of the skills and regen rate of initiative. And the worst part is that you only need to spend mostly on 2 ability combos so not having ini for the other skills is hardly a lost. You can afford to spam your 2 most powerful skills for a long time.

Oh, you may not have seen, but I run both QRecov and AR. They’re both great, and, IMO, superior to XII. It’s also true that the build can fall pretty quickly to condis. People ask me why I use 2 so often. It’s because I’m condi cleansing as much as possible. A single cripple, chill, or weakness could completely throw this build off balance. But yeah, the traits/utilities might be different, but the overall the trait point distribution is super strong, there are so many good options, and lots of options that, while not the best, IMO, are still perfectly acceptable options.
But don’t tell people about how good the build is! :P
Anet and the thief class designer/balancer will be remembered as the biggest joke in class/profession design. Wonder if he’ll/she’ll ever get a job if his/her name comes out. I’d love to know their name to avoid any game they are involved with in the future.
