We only have 8 classes, why is there only 1-2 /viable/ builds per? Its boring. Other games add more and more and this one only seems to take away. This game was better in BETA. It has just got worse since.

Simple answer: Too much ranged damage, too little close quarter damage, far too much CC. The game revolves around who can either kite the better and blast from the distance, or who can kite the better doing damage and moving in for the spike kill.
You can only have some many different builds that essentially do the same in one class…

This game was not better in beta. If you seriously think that your insane. People just didn’t know what was good or how to counter anything in beta. So everything seemed good. I can assure you it wasn’t good in hindsight.

Ive been pvp’ing since beta and what I think has happened is not that all the builds that werent “top tier” got replaced by top tier builds but that 90% of the community flocked to the “top tier” builds and stopped making their own.

Although my Mesmer and Ele builds are very much my own I know they are fairly close to popular builds.

However, my Warrior, Guardian, Necro and Engie builds are very very very different from the builds I see people talking about/posting/playing with and Im pretty kitten successful with them.

The cookie cutter builds you see 90% of people using are good for them because they pvp solo. Im always pvp’ing with a team or other people so it gives me more room to create builds that are based on complimenting a team or another person with me. They can be used in hotjoins too but its harder because hotjoin kitten are terrible teammates.

They also buffed so many abilities/made new builds viable. I fail to see your point… Remember when people thought Venom builds were so OP they needed a nerf….. Or how about HB? Now those builds are considered trash, and for a good reason.

Synergy of builds is terrible in gw2 compared to gw1. There’s no argument or comparison to be made.

The sheer diversity of builds in gw1 overshadows gw2 effortlessly.

People don’t use the other builds because they’re just plain terrible compared to the cookie cutters. For example, P/P on thief was asked to be looked at plenty of times. Yet, there’s literally been no change made to that weapon set besides some MINOR changes in certain traits (almost useless and unnoticeable).

Gw2 SEVERELY lacks options when it comes to builds, especially on certain specific classes.

I play a warrior so can’t comment on thief abilities. Thieves already have it better then warriors in terms of melee combat though.

Dream on OP, dream on. GW1 had quite a few more skills than GW2 and none of the classes had 15 viable builds.

But really, if I don’t take you literally, I understand what you mean. Classes need more viable builds. The truth is, there are a few builds that would be viable, it just needs people to give them a chance.

I know this is the pvp forum so most people are only considering the number of pvp builds that were available to classes, but across the different game modes in guild wars 1, there were about 15 builds with a high rating for every class.

With this game, a minimum of 5 builds should be viable for every class (1 build per one trait focus).

People like you dont use the other builds because you’re just plain terrible, not the “other” builds. Anything that is considered another build in comparison to cookie cutters is still some made up build you are just copying. Why dont you get some friends, sit down with them and determine and figure out what you can do with each of you playing your favorite class.

Now keep in mind you actually have to be more than a decent player to do well.

The whole gw2 isnt gw1 died months ago, unless you’re new to gw2 and are just now getting to the “waah gw2 isnt gw1” phase.

They just need to make 1-2 viable builds per playstyle per weaponset. That would already give a lot of choices. Then expand on the combo-system to add another skill layer.

Lack of synergy between classes removes the whole idea of team builds = less viable builds

But the main culprit I believe is the game mode itself. If the main objective of TPvP is elimination(deathmatch/GvG) instead of capturing and defending nodes then we’d have a lot more build diversity simply because all the classes have multiple ways to inflict damage. So builds like DPS guards, rifle warrs, confusion mes, P/P thieves can actually contribute and become viable builds since the object of the game is to inflict damage and eliminate the other team.

Agree. Someone comes up with a build…promotes it, and the sheeple lap it up. Then someone else comes up with a new angle and creates a new build…and the sheeple change over.

Thank you for confirming what i said. Thiefs are only viable because of Heartseeker, which is a High Damage, No CD, Gap Closer Strike. Essentially everything i said the true melee classes lack.
