I understand what the difference are (the points closest to you and the one that makes the most time to get to), but I see people talking about how different classes make better far or home point bunkers or assulter then others. Why is this? What makes them different?

Both roles are for strong 1v1 builds, so they have that in common. Home point generally tends toward more tanky builds that can sustain in 2v1 long enough for assistance to arrive when necessary, far point tends to favor mobility and raw killing power a little more, because your far point assaulter will be responsible for getting the decap if their close defender pushes off point and if he does get into a 1v1 he needs to make the kill before help arrives to get the decap.

On far point there is a high risk that you might be engaged by the opponent respawn and get outnumbered, so you either get help and tank a bit or disengage. Some classes just die too fast or can´t disengage from farpoint when outnumbered or don´t bring the needed 1v1 strenght for sidepoint 1v1s.

So you see after which criteria you pick the farpoint invader. Now you have to deal with this kind of invader on your close point and look for a build/strategy to counter the opponent invader.

Certain classes are typically better at it than others. If you’re home point you don’t want to get decapped long enough for help to arrive. This usually means a solid access to stability or the ability to evade most CC that is telegraphed.

Most of the time people don’t assault far while the home pt bunker is there if they already have it capped. If they don’t it’s usually a class that can stay on point and not let the home pt bunker get the cap early on. Sometimes there will be ballsy far point assaulters who can not only decap but solo the far point bunker. Caed, Cruuk and Jumper, for example.

Also remember that sidepoint control players will usually not need much team support in their builds. For example, practically every team uses a bunker guardian at midpoint because no one else can provide stability, party condition removal, party healing, and downed state control like guardians can.

However, other professions can build more selfishly and keep themselves alive, or win a duel, or decap a point better than a guardian can. So they play sidepoints.

Guardian: not so good solobunker, good teamfight abilities, rarely used on sidepoints (unless ° team fights happen there).

War: good mobility for fas°t freecaps but not good pointholders. Might be used to counter some classes on sidepoints like hammer/lb counters spirit rangers quiet well.

Thief: Good mobility as war, certain builds make decent far point assaulters (cruux has one in his s°tream i belive). Shadow trap is great for getting back home when its attacked/leaving it on far for use when the enemy leaves it.

Engi: Good agains°t certain classes in 1vs1 and a lot of knockbacks (this makes it possible to build rather tanky and getting a decap tho not killing the enemy).

Ranger: S°trong in 1vs1, often used for home. Not so good at decapping.

Mes: Portal is good for leaving close alone but being able to defend it if necessary. While certain builds (like phantasms) are s°trong on the 1vs1 servers they arent used as sidepointdefenders because they revolve around kiting (and s°tealth) too much.

Necro: Not that great in 1vs1, no great mobility.

Ele: Was a great solobunker once but rarely used anymore, rather played as burs°ter in teamfights.

Im not a great pro so dont count on my words° too much but this is my experience.

Im not a big fan of assualting the far point in casual pick up play. You usually have some idiot that goes there after its turned already and the bunker there easily handles them until they get help and they don’t even turn the point neutral half the time because they cant get the bunker off the point. Then use lose at the middle because the other side didn’t send an assaulter to your home point and they have four at the middle to your three if you have a home point bunker and a guy assaulting there home point. Far point assualting is for coordinated teams in VOIP imo where everyone has very specific roles unless they just hand it to you by having no one there.
