February update discussion
Two Team Rated Play in PvP
It’s time to prove your skill! In this new type of competitive PvP, two teams of equal average rating are pitted against each other in a quick, intense match. The ratings for every member of each team is then adjusted after the match. "

Also, hopefully that post is a tiny snapshot of what’s to come, because my warped mine is expecting some big things from February/March updates.

I think you may be underestimating how bad that would be if they allowed that in a same paid queue as full teams on VOIP. You would pay to get farmed. To get into paids I think it needs to be full pre-made teams against the same.
Frees with ranking should have a duo/solo only option with matchmaking. Then this game is in a happy place.
My prediction for what the new game mode will be like:
Regular conquest
Buffs [like temple buffs or similar] will appear on time intervals
Capture buff → run to point you currently own → receive point bonus

great gametype imo. best of both worlds. can make for roller coaster matches, great comeback potential.
in order for it to be really awesome though, the Orb can’t be on a timer, it needs to spawn as soon as it has been capped & should be waiting when the match begins. the reason is to incentivize protecting the Orb without capping it to attempt to force your opponents into a bad position, which they then have options for counterplay.

no underestimate. i know how it feels like to be “farmed” hahaah. i met up with “hunting high and low” guild in free tourney two times.
current free tourny already works regardless of the party size you enter.
i.e. enter alone, the system pairs u up with 4 others.
enter as 2 players, system finds 3 more.
enter as 3, system finds 2 more.
etc.
currently it works like this. i hope it stays that way at least.

Yes, it sounds exactly like Eye of the Storm from WoW. That was actually one of my favorite maps there, but jeeesh … you have to admit that it took zero creativity on Anet’s part to come up with that. It is pure copycat in every way, and if they were going to put that little thought into it they could have at least ripped off a few more from WoW instead of only giving us one.

It’s funny that everyone is hyped up because of :

Unless a dev says otherwhise, I am 99.99% sure it is only matchmaking – which they are currently testing ingame. No ladder, no visible rating, no leaderboards – same old crap with the worst leaderboard system in the history of games called Qualifying Points.
This is completely awesome. The devs have given us two of the most requested features for spvp- a map with a new mechanic (if it like eye of the storm it will be great) and ranked matchmaking for teams.
The 1 map per tourney system was a brilliant idea, really made the game more enjoyable. With this new content spvp is going to be a blast. Good work imo.
i just hope they will add new reward system soon too, so it will be dependant on rating and not on glory farming like a crazy kitten…
anyway, this patch looks good and we are finally moving forward
Please anet, make those ratings visible in form of a ladder. We need LONG TIME MOTIVATION. At Least, everyone should be able to see his own ranking. In the next step make it visible for everyone
So this is the major pvp update? A new pvp map ? Gz PVP department seems to work hard. I remember an interview where one of you said that creating a new map dont need much manpower (the interview was regards to silent storm map). And Matchmaking is already implemented in my opinion because I mainly fight against players of the same level.
Ah and Anet: Regards to the Free Tournaments -> Congratulations you totally killed them. You want that people train maps in PAIDS? Training should be done in free tournaments or hot join. Since you totally messed up the Paid system my motivation is totally gone because everyone has orian gear and qualfication points are the new honor. Ah and thanks to god you also removed gems from PVP. Now you dont get any benefits in PVP for PVE. Niceeeee
And every WEEK a different map in Paids? You really want that people get tired of all of your maps. Common it cant be that hard to program a random selector for each queue.

How is it works? Rank or win/lose ratio is the most important thing? Do u plan create GUILD ratting soon? Do u plan balanced rewards? For low ratio lower than for higher? How do u see it? Do u think that gems should be part of reward?
Because its important to not waste another half year for bad/not working matchmaking.
I am waiting to see 40 gems as a reward to the winner. I don’t have a reason to play paids anymore until I get some reward for playing it. Some QP is not gonna cut it since it is a useless currency and shows only how good and stable team you have (had). Next thing is, the rating better be good and not pug vs team, or based solely on ranks. Also, pug who do not use TS will get crushed over and over.
So gl in wait, nobody give 40 gems for a winer 1 round paid, because gems lose their value. I think reward should depence from actually position in ladder(normal ladder, not qp ladder), and only top teams should get gems from paid and it should be sth like 5 gems for a win.

You overthinking this guys.First lets see how it would go and then you can say what do you think.I find the February update very exciting…And the paid system 1v1 team was a blast for me.Im a casual player and i had a chance in playing some quick competetive games with randoms..And when we got randoms too,we got so much fun.I know some “pros” are now QQing cause ppl from randoms nuked em but i dont care.This was a success as Anet said cause it attracked more players to play pvp..Everyday someone was spamming for paids and you could find a decent random team in about half an hour.So i dont care what do you say the numbers says that was a success so it must stay that way.

Really shocked anyone can moan about these changes. They are significant and prove that the devs know what is needed.
This game is a lot of fun but the main thing lacking is matchmaking and ratings. Getting stomped or stomping people is no fun. Honestly thats the only critism of the 1v1 team system I have seen by non-trolls on this forum. They want to play vs teams their standard. With this system they can do this.
The new map is another map to keep things fresh and hopefully they will have a full rotation of maps for this 1v1 system.
The devil is in the detail of course and they need to keep the cost to 1 ticket or (even better) remove the cost altogether.
But all in all the major thing needed sounds like it is being added to the game. If its coupled with a fixing of the score system (to make hotjoin less lame) then all the better. And sure there are some balance changes that are needed but presuming aoe tones down ranger traps and some of the dagger ele skills that will help (although I would rather eles getting a healing power nerf along with guardians). Traps obviously need some hate given how powerful they are on such short CD’s.

Im sorry but i think that you are totally wrong.The arrow speed is just to avoid the obstructed bug that happened all the time.It didnt enchanced the dmg but the reliability.

It has a part II and III that you can see how problematic was the pets and still these problems havent gone 100%.
This thread is not a Ranger thread but because is mentioned about balancing in February update im using the Ranger example for 2 reasons:
1.Its the class i mainly play,so i know more things about it
2.All the arguement is to point that we dont need that much balancing

I disagree completely, ranger is no easier than any other class.It may seem easy to you because rangers have been underdog in PvP since release and they had to work hard and learn how to adapt and overcome that, so now when they are balanced properly you start losing to skilled rangers and you think its easy. Because it MUST be easy, there is no way that someone who plays a ranger can be skilled player, all “skilled” players already play mesmers and thieves, right?
Funny … I find ele way easier than ranger. The only class I find to be more challenging than ranger is engineer . I should probably add, that I haven’t really dived into warrior gameplay, and I am most likely a horrible thief.
I think rangers reputation as a faceroll-class is a stigma inherited from another game … and completely undeserved.

This is also what I think.. Im no friend of stupid player ratings and average team ratings based on the player ratings for matchmaking.. Imagine: I always play with my guild and we all have the same player rating. Then I guest in my friend’s guild and we lose a couple of matches so MY OWN player rating decreases. Then I play again with my guild mates and our average team rating is lower than before because my player rating is lower through losing with a DIFFERENT team… but this affects our team rating —> that makes no sense imo

I’m just hoping the SOTG doesn’t turn into useless mumble like the first one with guys praising the PvP and debating one or two of their biggest gripes without getting the questions answered.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against topQP players invited, but it really should be a community event, not a situation where they talk about only one profession or one skill for 30 minutes.

Agreed. Its probably the only class (maybe thief too) where somebody with literally no idea can pick it up…google a build and be able to win almost all 1v1s instantly even vs better players.
Lay a few aoe traps in front of u. Get ur pet to attack and then click some buttons from range. Its so basic lol

I’m having a hard time understanding Anet’s priorities.
While many voiced the opinion about how unattractive conquest mode is and the lack of diversity, investing resources in creating a new map instead of working on bringing together the PvP community doesn’t make much sense to me.
You have two issues here, really:
- Combat mechanics and PvP maps/mode that don’t appeal to everyone
- a complete lack of PvP community due to the above, but also, and dare I say mainly due to the lack of tools to follow players, teams, create the gossip, the atmosphere – the mix of taunts, rivalries, inspiration that make PvP so awesome and alive- and all these things necessary for the competitive scene to blossom.
Decision was made to ship the game without any of the features from the second batch, namely no matchmaking, no ladder, no obs mode. As a consequence there’s absolutely no way to know how good one is which leads to no excitement in the PvP scene. Quite the irony for a competitive game.
I understand implementing a competitive system with ladder and tournaments is quite complex, especially when in the shadow of Starcraft 2 and LoL season 3. But at least make it your top priority:(

You need to sacrifice utility skills to have traps, you “genius”.
regarding the announcement they did after the Christmas holidays the additional seem a bit low imo. maybe and hopefully they did not find it necessary to give the costume arenas a separate section.

i lay my hopes in a ladder system. a working matchmaking is also a must. but PLEASE. Increase the reward for this effort greatly. r4x is so painfull.
