They don’t need to point out everything they are going to do be real.
Be nice if what they were doing didn’t take half a life time though.
A livestream or forum post the monday before patch would be fine.
Feels like players ask the devs to do things others in the industry aren’t really doing.
They gave us Class balance philosophies in December and have wavered on them, any long term plans they give out they probably wont stick to.
But what Puma said works too.

They want the warrior to have an even sturdier body. I thought that was obvious.

No but they should give us a general idea of the direction they are headed in considering the pvp community has lost all hope and has dwindled down the last player. Also no other MMO has messed up so badly and continued to leave their community in the dark about what they are doing and hoping that it would keep working
And ANET breathes on the idea of not doing what other devs/companies do so that isn’t even the question
“Best Guardian NA”
nty, I don’t care to hear anet’s pr again, cause that’s all you’ll get
Its definitely not off the table :P
Anet,
I am sure I speak for many players when I say this. I truly believe that you guys should fill ALL of us in with exactly what is to come for PvP. Leaving us in the dark is not helping and I know thats your policy, but I can say for over a year it has not worked. So why not try something new and actually tell us what you are working on and let us give our opinions if this will do justice.
I know that you want to make sure when you revamp PvP its done right, but doing it and leaving us in the cold without any input IS NOT the way to do it IMHO. Tell us how exactly you are gonna revamp or the ideas youve thought of for the reward system, pvp legendaries, new game modes, new incentives, revamped heart of the mists, etc……
We are waiting patiently and its been over a year and I can honestly, even though we are not entitled to anything, say its time that we start getting a little more info on whats to come. This way we are well informed before its released, given time to give input/feedback, and are NOT disappointed when its released and just start QQing more.
Well, they already put out the Oct. 15th balance preview that they delivered a month in advance. Also, the confirmation that new modes are in early testing. Also, the confirmation that revamped rewards system is one of the next things coming.
I think it’s smart to not get too specific, as people will often find ways to disagree with whatever specific approach they choose.

True but I think they also should because they have yet to take that approach so we aren’t sure and neither are they, if that would be a positive thing or bad one.

LOL that sounds like the automatic generated response anet keeps giving in this forum. I really hope they give us some sort of preview on the new game mode – maybe even like a 1 minute video and 1 paragraph of explaining the mode would do because clearly player input will help shape it – and better now then it being released and anet taking 1 year to fix it.

Err… I mean.
As Jonathan Sharp mentioned in another thread we are working on additional game types among other things.
Personally, I’m busy doing some major work on our server infrastructure to clean it up and improve scalability, which opens the doors for a lot of things coming down the pipe.

Do you do programming on all aspects of the game or is your primary focus with the PvP team? And +1.. love the response.

I’m part of the PvP team, and any benefit my work has to the rest of the game is purely coincidental.

How long would you last in a cage fight against Evan?

Where has A-Net been hiding you for the last year? Its like you broke out from being locked in server hell this whole time and just lit the forums up with quality responses everywhere.
I second the idea of a Justin v Evan cage match. This guy is legit.

Just curious here, but will the cleaning up include opening doors for an actual observer mode for TA, with replays and all (a-la GW style)?
My little idea: before new game mode plx make (in sPVP) a second set of traits and armors so we can switch beetwen them before the match starts.
New game mode needs new meta so that tool will be very helpfull. Like in skyhammer I can bet lots of players in solo Q when they see skyhamer they go out > change build or change charracter > skip back and there is no time left to say where u going etc (strategy stuff, and yes some ppl like to set strategy before match in solo Q)
This topic is very good I hope A Net will tell us something more than “Guys, thanks for posting in here and being constructive. We really like the ideas in here. Keep them coming and I’ll pass them along to the team!” I know you can come on guys WE ARE THE SAME BIG GW2 FAMILY, there shuldnt be secrets in family….

I’m glad it feels like it to you that we expect too much and frequent give and take between devs and players is not industry standard but my experience is that it is false. You sound like someone that has only played GW1 and GW2. Almost every MMORPG I have ever played that wasn’t crap released patch notes ahead of time and also gave fairly detailed here is what is coming down the pike type posts almost several times a year even for pvp. Those forums still exist DAOC, Warhammer, and Rift and even Star Wars which sadly was always crap but they still released patch notes ahead of time so if you dont believe you can go check. I just don’t understand the idea that it is the player’s fault or the players are always unreasonable. It’s not unreasonable over a year in to expect pvp to farther along given the money this game has made in a lot of people’s mind.

We’re just starting work on a number of bigger systems/features for PvP, and as is our policy until they are far enough along that we won’t throw them out or change them massively we won’t talk about them quite yet. We’re working down a list of big stuff though, and there are more folks working on PvP related projects right now than ever.
And as a reminder, things we’ve already said we’re working on currently that are far enough along for us to discuss are:
- Fixing rewards and progression in PvP to make the game type much more rewarding.
- Investigating new game types for PvP.
- Improving the game and experience for the core base in general to make it more fun for more casual or casual-competitive gamers to play PvP.
- Improving and continuing to support and grow the competitive scene.
In January, things should hopefully be nailed down enough we should be able to go into much greater detail on the other systems and features we’re working on right now on top of the stuff listed above.
If you flip enough table, you will probably see the horizon ! Blue sky or cloudy, that’s the question !

So, I guess this is a moot point, but the words “We’re just starting work on a number of bigger systems/features for PvP” are the ones that drive me crazy. I, as well as most of the other forum posters in SPVP, have been faithfully waiting for this game to develop into the game we were promised at launch. We’ve been strung along for over 14 months now with promises of, “well talk about that more later” and it’s never talked about. Then a year later we get, “we’re finally working on soandso”, well, I guess we know why you weren’t ready to talk about it before…because it was only being talked about internally. Great.
And I know this will immediately get discounted, but the fact is PvE has been getting these features added at a steady clip since launch, and yet we are 14 months into this game and we are just now getting stuff worked on.
You can say that you’ve been adding things all along to SPvP, and in some cases to magazines the great progress is bragged about, but the truth is, most of the features added were either ripped out because they were ill-conceived or they were done incorrectly because apparently live servers are beta servers for concepts.
Anyway, as I’m sure you’re aware, I’ll keep playing this game because clearly the mechanics are fun, but it’s a shame that after 14 months I have nothing to show for it and I’ve been toiling away in the same game mode watching it die around me.
Have a good day.

I have to agree with this. Also since you guys have released the blog about the upcoming features in the second half, PvP is the only thing that hasn’t received anything specifically at all so far, yet we’ve been waiting the longest.

I think ArenaNet use more time and money in PvE first, because that’s the mode that gives more money to them, it’s very logical. They should find a way to make players spend more time, and gems, in PvP, and the developing for PvP will skyrocket, I bet.
I have a simple idea that for sure will make (at least me) play more PvP. Don’t limit the laurels, allow to get 2 laurels in a day, one in PvE and one in PvP, same for monthly.

nearly the same you said in january 2013… promising it for second part of 2013!
right i can understand it take time to implement something. what i cant understand is seeing how so much ppl quit and refuse to implement little things that would provide at least something during the time until its finished. it couldnt be to hard to implement a dropchance of eventskins in tourney rewardchests. it couldnt be to hard to implement a certain amount of gold in a tourney rewardchest. it couldnt be to hard to give the glory vendor some pve-items like exp-scrolls, skillspoint-scrolls or gold in exhange for glory. it couldnt be to hard to implement that pvp-daily give essence of luck.
and dont argue that glory-gold exhange would ruin the market. u screw it up every 2 weeks with living world updates where new farmspots where created.
see what i did? that all are easy to implement rewards for playing pvp with things that are already ingame. so why not implement it during u finished ur reward overhaul in 2020?

Sorry Colin, but at this point, no matter how hard you guys try to delude us with such “empty” news, it’s just wont work anymore.
Basically, since one of the very first State of the Game episodes a whole year ago, we have heard Every. Single. One of your “coming soon” changes.
We know that you want to make PvP more rewarding and more fun. We know that you are looking into new game types (since beta!). We know you want to support both casual and competitive players. But wanting is nothing like doing so.
We know that you want to communicate with the community, but truth is that since at least half an year, every “red” post in the PvP sub-forum, every developer interview and Q&A about PvP is just the very same, hollow stuffs we have been hearing for the past year (and more!).
Nothing has changed. You are yet to make PvP more rewarding and fun. You are still looking into new game types. You are yet to support the competitive scene(or whatever has left of it). Though, one thing have changed – A lot less people are listening to your communication and a lot more just quit.
Here is a sugestion:
If you want any kind of two-way communication, first you have to deliver something. To communicate with us (and we with you), firstly, there have to be something to communicate about. Look at the last few State of the Game episodes – every question is dodged with “can’t talk about this at the moment” or “it’s on the table” or “it’s coming soon”. That’s the worst type communication if I ever heard one.
You already have a regular stream before every patch, why don’t you use it to host few State of the Game episodes yourselfs? Of course, invite some of the top players, ask them questions about your feature plans, some suggestions, etc. Make it the other way around.
Heh, that post turned kinda long… sadly no one will give it enough attention to make any difference at all.

So, you basicly say:
You are working on some (very vague formulated) stuff for pvp and in 3 month, you are far enough, that the developement is far enough (but not ready) to talk about?
No offense, this sounds almost like the stuff, students tell their teachers, when they get asked what they’ve done yet for a project and they don’t even have started, yet.
As I am no native English speaker could plz someone explain this to me:
In January, things should hopefully be nailed down enough we should be able to go into much greater detail on the other systems and features we’re working on right now on top of the stuff listed above.
…Does this mean, that “right now” you are not working on the features you listed up above?
As if the thing you are working on right now is “on top of the stuff listed above” doesnt this mean, it is “above” (-> not a part of) this list?
Maybe my English is just bad, I dont have any bad intentions, help would be welcome.

I agree. I wait for the day of the patch and the notes, and that’s all I allow myself to pay attention to. Everything else is vague and the dialogue with the devs is non existent and/or holds no substance. All I every hear is what they think we want to hear to tide us over.

so to all the people who quit 6 to 9 months ago and only check in to see if its around playable or fun. We should wait another 3-6 months?
Well two big mmo’s with pvp will prob be out by then. Not sure it will be relevant to many people. Suppose it comes down to how much its improved vs if the other games can deliver. Doubt i’ll check back in 3-6 months, but wish ya the best. Glad to see your starting to fix things for the loyal fanboys who cling to ya. Would be pretty depressing if they had to keep playing a game they didn’t enjoy for another year.

Except that there are no 2 big MMO coming out in the next 3-6 months.
Anyways, they are improving stuff not for the people that are gone they are improving stuff for the players that will be around, BUT more importantly, they are improving stuff for the biggest MMORPG market in the world, China.

If you go back and read the January state of the game, and July state of the game threads, you’ll find most of what you said above actually isn’t true. We have delivered on the things in those threads we said we would do. It’s totally reasonable to say you’d like us to do more, but I don’t think it’s fair to say we’re saying we’re going to do X and haven’t delivered on any of it. We’ve only recently made any promises about actively working on building game types, and everything we’ve said we were going to do back in January, we have already released.
I just want to say I get the frustration with wanting to see more done, we absolutely would love to see PvP get everything immediately as well. We have however very specifically listed what we’re building, and so far have delivered on all of those things in the timelines listed. It may not be everything you’d like to see, and my hope is as we continue into next year you’ll see everything on your list get checked off, but when raising concerns let’s at least be on the same page with timelines. I can be fair and say we need to do more, I’d ask you be the same with respect to what we’ve said we’re going to do.
As a reminder:
In January, we said we would be doing custom arenas, leader boards, and spectator mode. We did all of those things.
In July, we said we’re going to do a tournament at PAX, have separate solo and team queues for PvP, add ways to get you progressing towards legendaries in PvP, and updating the reward systems for PvP. We’ve accomplished half of those goals already, and hope to have made some real progress towards rewards/legendaries before the end of the year, which still has 2 months to go. In working on rewards, we decided we wanted to do something that’s very work intensive and much cooler for PvP players, so not all of it will be done this year.
WHO cares about the PAX tourney Colins.. IT SHOULD NOT have even happened with how the state of the game is… Specially with how the leader boards work, how rank is earned and how broken some classes still are.

I would like to know how balancing will occur moving forward. We have had to wait 3 months for a balance patch due to esports… yet the details that have been revealed show little indication of toning down condi/cc spam or the state of some classes in general.
I hope you have a better plan than to release a balance patch every 3 months in the future… why were small changes not made every second week in line with pve balence…

We’ll absolutely still keep doing smaller balance updates and patches when we have a major bug/balance thing we want to address.
Though I think we likely would want to sit on really huge balance updates to occur between major seasons competition wise for PvP/WvW along the lines of every 3 months or so in the future. We made this mistake once in Gw1 and did a huge balance update in the middle of one of our major competitions and set the entire PvP community into an uproar, and we promised we wouldn’t do that again.
That’s our thinking currently, though as we continue to grow PvP and establish our process for Gw2, it’s open to change based on player feedback and suggestions.

Thank you for your response Colin, I’m happy to hear there will be smaller balance patches and hope these will be more in focus in the future (such as the para sigil bug which could have been fixed months ago). As I’m sure you understand, going for so long without any changes, when the meta was so focused on condi/cc spam and passive effects, brought a lot of negativity in the community, and worse resentment of PAX as people felt this was the reason balance was delayed.
Though I am curious as to what classes/builds you think are over the top? :P

I would kill for smaller-sized arenas where you did 3v3 death matches.

Alright I appreciate the repsonses Colin, and its also nice to see you’ve taken it upon yourself to give us feedback. It seems you yourself jumped onto the PvP development team? I used to only see you posting in PvE threads. I am most definitely happy that more resources are being poured into PvP. It also seems that since we’ve waited so long we will be rewarded heavily. I STILL HAVE HOPE
I guess the main reason for my thread is because giving us some idea of what may come is a HUGE HELP. A lot of people in PvP basically got tired of hearing promises that they had yet to see and had no idea exactly what they entailed, and got fed up and left. IF MAYBE they were somehow hinted as to exactly what may come;
Example: (hypothetically dont bash me people)
Glory maybe your ticket to your long wanted legendary/gold
-I can guarantee you so many people would at least start farming more glory.
Match win chests will give a possible chance of something EXTREMELY VALUABLE/RARE/GOLD/PRECURSOR
-I can bet so many people would start doing more tourney to get chests.
etc….
Something like that would help people and give them hope and something to look forward too rather than almost nothing and no idea of whats to come. Then leaving and never coming back to see the great content. Just my 2 cents
