Here is your typical lop sided match, 500-100. Here is team ratings.

Losing team:
me 1857
player2 1833
player3 1813
player4 (duo) 1700+? (doesn’t show up on LB)
player5 (duo) 1700+? (doesn’t show up on LB)

Winning team:
player1 1867
player2 1882
player3 (duo) 1805
player4 (duo) 1865
player5 1869

Now overall it doesn’t seem like huge difference right? But here is the catch. At these ratings you get around 7 pts per win, you lose around 14 per loss so difference between under 1800 and 1880 is in quite few wins.

Why was this match even considered to be fair from matchmaking point? Why was the loss so punishing for the underdog team (14 pts -> need 2 wins to make up for it)? Why does matchmaking expect highest rated player on team to carry players that are 100 pts below enemy team?

You aren’t supposed to get fair matches, a good system knows if you would win or lose, and this system knows it.

But there is one thing missing, if you win against the odds, you should be rewarded with a lot more points, same if you lose against someone you are supposed to win, you should lose way more points.

This would be rare – except you are in the wrong rank and need to climb/fall down

Otherwise if all matches would be fair, you couldn’t leave your current mmr to the mmr you truly have. Right now the flaw is just the rewarding system, but i am sure Anet is working on a solution, since many gamers out of different skill levels suggested it

Do you expect some kind of black magic to result in nothing but fair matches for you?

The algorithm behind the MMR will never be perfect, nor could it be allowed to (because then your queue times would be endless). As for the lopsided match: from personal skill to class composition, there’s a thousand reasons a match can be decided that clearly. Sucks that you lost, but you’d be lying if you’d claim this has never happened in your favor.

At the end of the day, matchmaking works as an average. Perhaps not a single one of your games will be fair on its own, because that’d be impossible to achieve. But at the end of the session (or the season), you’ll have had a somewhat “fair” experience in total.

This is a gambler argument. Yes, overall it will even out eventually but after 50k matches maybe. By that time a player would probably quit the game tbh.

So you are saying it is fine that system puts player in obviously lost matches thus wasting players time and it is fine that this player also gets heavily punished for the loss. OKkkkkkkk.

My perspective is this:

Placed Gold > Had some really great matches with players with similar skill > Had some ragers who fed purposely > Fell to silver > Players so bad I can’t carry 4 > Continue to lose rating > Get 28 kills as Thief on my 7th Ranked game as thief because players so bad > Still lose rating cuz I never win anymore.

I really wish Anet could look at some individual accounts and replace them into correct slots, I shouldn’t be getting 28 kills as thief when I don’t even have 10 ranked games as thief.

Just for clarity: A Game yesterday I had 4 allies on Mid point with 2 enemies on each side point, they refused to leave mid because they needed to defend it against 1 guy for the entire game. Props to the other team for using the Temple map correctly too.

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.
….. And Elementalist.

No, i say, ranked is to improve your skill!

To become better!

Learning!

Fighting!

And those matches are there for two reasons, eitehr that you win and show the system you improved – you passed the test!

Or in case you fail, that you learn from better players, that you can see their strategy, that you can adapt and improve after that game

I can show the system that i improved when i carried 2 players on my team that are 100 pts below enemy team? Good joke. I have faced “better players” – you know how it looked like? They run duo, matchmaking also puts 4 of them on same team vs team that is 300 pts below them.

Got foefire map (surprise…),

1 went home
At crossroad 2 went far?
Thinking we’ll 2v4 at mid should be easy
Looked back at the other and saw guild tag, wvw zerger
You can probably guess it, they followed the 2 to far
So I’m looking at a 1v4 at mid
I know the game is lost at this point so I don’t care and go home
We actually won because everyone was lagging and enemy had multiple DC
Still almost lost to them…
