I think free accounts shouldn’t be allowed to play ranked until core specs are viable (and currently they are anything but viable). I also think the limit should be rank 30, not 20. A tutorial on conquest would also extremely help.

Rank makes no difference in how good a player is. I watched a guardian last night with 454 PvP rank that was keyturning, running 1v5 into points and literally just clicking any ability of his at random (and didn’t even have his 1 on auto attack) and still managed to win and was 1300+.

Anet managed to devise a matchmaking system that literally doesn’t take individual player ability into account whatsoever and still allows players to get into “high” ranks purely on random luck.

If you’re new to GW2 and don’t immediately get into high Plat, you’ll statistically never get there regardless of how good you are, because Anet doesn’t have ANY performance-based metric in place to prevent people who are basically afk in matches from increasing in MMR purely because they got carried.

Core is not totally bad. At higher level there are only a few core builds left that can compete. Yes it woudlbe fine if all classes have 1-2core builds to be competative, which is´t the case but it´s not totally bad. It depends much mor toe the player and team then the build (unless you try garbage builds …)
