Frustrated with Necro
Necromancer is great in world PvE, PvP, and world vs. world. The only mode the class is bad in is dungeons, which are so easy that just about anyone can do them quickly and efficiently outside of DnT tournaments.
Maybe your build needs work, or you should give a little more thought to positioning than you currently do. Whatever the problem, it’s not the class.
I do beleive my positioning could be the issue, however… it never fails no matter how far I am away, I am always getting focused and fighting for my life to do something. I think the build that ive been using is pretty standard, ive tried PoC or Terror build variations with either US or Foot in the Grave and no matter what, I am being focused and dead before I know it.
Another issue of mines is probably dodging, but there is only so much of that I can do when I have a ranger pounding on me in the back and a thief or warrior in my face.
Admittedly, I think necromancer has to focus a lot more on positioning than other classes. The pay-off is the class does a ton more damage to a team with proper positioning.
Try watching Helseth’s video on positioning. The video is for mesmer, but it has good tips for necromancers as well. In general, you should almost never stand on the point as necromancer, and you should try to stand in places that are difficult to reach.
Yea, I think that is something I am beginning to realize the most. I will check the video out though and hopefully learn something. Thanks.
At OP, mebbe these issues have sth to do with your frustration, amongst other things.
Necros are target no. 1 – this is probably the issue – the other team are deliberately focussing you down first.
Having 2+ people on you as a Necro is not going to end well unless you’re extremely skilled or they are terribad. Other classes are a little more forgiving in battles against 2 or more foes.
80 Ranger (3), 80 Warrior (3), 80 Thief (3)
80 Ele (2), 80 Engi (3), 80 Rev (2)

ty for mentioning this ..
i’ll risk a infraction to bump that..

Positioning is important, especially as a necro. When you see a 1vs2 comming you should think about TeleWurming away or using spectral walk, or stay around while avoiding getting hit and wait for support. Rotate the hell out of them, Necro’s are very viable in 2vs2 and 3vs3.

“Multiclass implies you can actually play the class” – a certain royalty
Most Necros I’ve run into recently have Reaper’s Protection – its the most annoying thing in the world – might help but I agree that positioning will make the biggest difference to surivival over and above anything else.
The only way necro feels ultra powerful is in a DPS composition imo. When playing in a bunkery comp you will just get focussed and die. It is fine for people who don’t play necro to talk about positioning. But in truth if nobody has the damage to kill the opposition quickly then you will die and no positioning can help you.
If you are “well positioned” in a bunker comp you will die anyway because the opposition can just run to where you are and kill you. Then you have to scramble onto and off the point to get peels and basically kite like a boss. The only realible “peel” for a slow/cooldown based class like necro is simply killing the opposition. Thus, I would recommend always playing necro alongside other dps classes. Necro in a 4 dps/1 hybrid set up is probably one of the most devastating things in the game.
Necro in a bunker comp is decent vs other bunker comps. But vs ANY thief/mesmer comp, when you are a necro in a bunker comp (when you play necro as the snowball/roamer class) you will just get farmed even if the thief and mesmer aren’t particularly good. No positioning will help you because of their massive dps, mobility and evasion. And you will struggle to get any kills because they will port out when low and you wont have any dps to just spike them out.
All in all, if you want to have fun playing necro in tpvp I recommend playing it in a full dps set up. a couple of dps guards, maybe another necro, maybe a power ranger, maybe an engi, a backstab thief. All these things will help you to spike people out.
Necro is the most unbalanced class in the game in that its either totally brokenly OP (with life force and when outnumbering) or totally useless (in those games where you never get life force).
Necromancer/Casual Warrior
[Team] Best WvW guild of all time. EASILY.
more work? play a MM and alt tab! XD
but on a serious note, i feel like my power necro needs less precision (not the stat, but performing everything perfectly without mistakes) than alot of other classes like guard, ele and thief.
Why do I have to do more work than any class in this game when it comes to pvp and by the time im fighting off 2 opponents which are ALWAYS on me, I only have a slight chance to actually do something? Why is it that the necro class is so subpar at every game mode? With the recent patch I now not only have to worry about Warriors who are immune to every condition and fear, or thieves who one shot me, or elementalist and turret engis whom cleanse off my conditions as if they were just the common cold, but now rangers too who slaughter me before I can even get up in their face?
What is this? Where is the balance in this game? Am I missing something or is it just me? Why, why, why!!!

No seriously though, why are necromancers getting this type of treatment from Arenanet?
There are three things it could be:
- Build
- The two main meta builds are 0/6/4/0/4 (condi) and 6/2/0/0/6 (power). Check MetaBattle for some basic necro builds if you don’t have one.
- Positioning
- The key to survival is knowing how to juke, kite position. Despite the freeness of fighting and the lack of a healer and tanks, there still is a frontline, middle line, backline to this game. Necromancer, is generally a backline fighter as they usually will be focused first. Stay back and widdle with long ranged stuff and push it when you see something on their team get low or something on your team is being focused besides you.
- Tactics
- In things like 1v1s, learn what most enemies start out doing. Most thieves will put down a black powder before jumping in. More importantly, they do it at a certain range away. Some warriors open up with pin down. Rifle engis will go for overcharged show when they are in range do it. The more you can predict, the more you can survive.

I don’t really agree with this post. First of all condi necro is the most used build and the most useful at the same time imo (especially in TeamQ). Scepter and staff are used for these builds, good luck with that if you don’t take positioning into account.
Second, I could kill many opponents in a 1vs1 as a bunker necro, and protect the capture point at the same time. Unfortuneately, many other professions have a higher self sustain and bunkeriness such as warrior and engi, which makes necro not very suitable with a bunker build.
Third, your power build is is highly dependent on your team. As we saw in a recent NA ToG a power necro without Lich is dead before you know it, depending on its team to rezz him asap. Spiking one target with 2 persons, one of which is the necro, is therefore not really better than spiking it with a thief and an ele for example (in my opinion).
The only thing that a necro can do better than most professions is spreading condi’s, therefore a condi build has the most value if you ask me.
