Hmm, there is no “spectator” mode yet, so i dont think so :/
You must not have read the other threads..
A lot of people stopped playing sPvP because of lack of features/content actually.
So “to early to tell” I guess.
If private servers come out Nov 15th, then it will have taken them 2.5 months to implement one of the many stages required of an e-Sport.
So going to go with too early to tell.
When LoL came out, if you told me it would eventually grow into the largest e-Sport in the world I would have laughed.

GW1 was an eSport and there were no private servers. The ability to start custom GvGs came wayyyy after its peak.
Private servers are not a “requirement”.
Just saying. I still agree with your main point, which is that they’re taking too kitten long to implement stuff.
There are a lot of things that need to be done, but I really hope they will do it.
We need a better scoring system, one that actual reflects good play.
Custom games (even custom tournaments).
Spectator Mode. (a must for eSports).
Replay’s (it’s very important to reflect back into your previous matches).
Matches need to feel varied and interesting to watch, if it’s too repetitive it will lose interest.
It I was supposed to make a decision right NOW… I’d say no. “Pub-stomping” builds or not, such “keyboard faceroll” builds exists, and they really break the E-sports purpose to this game. Battles decided In two seconds or less does not entertain a player… nor even a whole crowd.
It saddens me to say such a thing, really. I was expecting something “more” for what’ve been promised, and all the hype, etc. I’d say “Leave E-sports In a corner for now, and fix your PvP. It’s broken.”
As it is? Not even close.
It will require a lot of attention to problems and some humbling of the PvP devs to get them off their pedestal, and recognize they’ve made a lot of minor and a few major mistakes. It’s not about new features, although that’s part of it. Core mechanics simply are not working, and even worse, actively drive people away.
Definately too early to tell. They should probably focus on having a balanced/enjoyable enough pvp for the large casual player base to come and stay, then atleast you have something to build off of.
LoL didn’t start off the bat focusing on esport features and pro-players.
The fact that they think custom arena’s is more important than a competitive solo queue slightly worries me. But I’m not an expert.
Unfortunately i think after they got their initial income from sales, pvp is no longer on their priorities.Almost everything on their virtual store is exclusive to PvE and most of the player base still playing this game is doing so casually on PvE, so they are taking their pace adding some PvE content and marginal things for PvP.
I’m sad to say this, but the game had and still has so much potential for greatness however it seems the esport boat has set sail without Anet on it and they don’t seem urged about it.

This is what makes me laugh though.
Pretty much everyone that complains about the pve and lack of “endgame” or stuff to do get told it’s because the endgame is about pvp, and the game is base/focused on pvp.

Who said that?
ANet said: PvE endgame is simply the same locations you’ve been using to level up. These remain challenging thanks to the downscaling feature.

PvE’ers say that.
Also that second part is false, nothing was challenging in the first place.
My point is, PvE’ers say PvE isn’t the focus or endgame, it’s all about the pvp in this game. Then PvP’ers say the game is all about the PvE and PvP is just a tiny tacked on portion of the game.
Excluding WvW neither one is wrong. =p
No, profession mechanics are to simple.
Half of them are one button wonders, EVERY profession needs extraordinarily high skill floors and skill caps for an Mmo-Rpg to succeed as an E-sport.

As many others have stated this game still has great potential. It is a game I can see one day becoming an esport if anet get its act together. However as it stands now guild wars 2 and esport should never be in the same sentence.
As it is, of course not. But it’s not that far away imo.
Core mechanics of combat and classes work well, some fine tuning is of course needed, but overall the balance is pretty good. I don’t believe in the so much proclaimed lack of build possibilities. I’m seeing a lot of original and creative stuff builds wise, involving even the red headed step childs (so far) ranger and warriors, just to name a couple, and even foregoing guardians, and there’s plenty of teams not running a thief, i saw some good ones not running mesmer, and so on and so forth.. And yeah i’m talking paid tPvP, and i’m talking about teams that have beaten top teams.
What is really needed to make it into an e-sport?
- a tracking system, registering wins and losses, w/l ratio, matches history
- a ladder that keeps what mentioned above as its mechanic, and not QPs earned, because let’s face it, altough it’s true the teams currently at the top of that food chain are without an ounce of doubt excellent, but it is just as true there are other excellent teams that just don’t play that much and are far below the position they deserve.
- spectator mode, of course
- a different kind of battle, longer, more engaging, more back and forth. As it is now, i doubt a spectator could really be entertained. The current mechanics don’t really allow spectacular comebacks, and unless it’s a really close match, it’s pretty easy to tell who’s win by the time it’s mid game. GW1 GvG of course comes to mind.
- free tournaments matching people based on their position on the ladder, to encourage new players. As it is now, GW2 is really noob unfriendly, a brand new team of fresh players will justget mercilessly stomped and probably not give it another go after the first times they been spanked.

Basically everything PaZZo said. Also, in order to develop an eSport you would first need a substantial playerbase for PvP.
As it stands now, too few people are interested in this side of the game. Most of the servers remain empty, and it seems fewer and fewer play every day.
One could speculate on how to attract more people, but until they make it more appealing and somewhat rewarding for the people that don’t care solely about improving their own skills, it doesn’t stand a chance even if the actual structure is there. There is really no hype around the PvP anymore.
PvP still needs some serious attention and it’s very troubling to me that the devs are too caught up in things like ascended gear and coming out with the next event and cash shop item. The combat in this game is excellent, and I think they could seriously capitalize on that by turning their full attention to PvP for a while.
Its no where near ready. Still to unbalanced and we STILL have bugged or broken skills, traits and such and lets not forget the random disconnects and loading screen crashes.
This game will NEVER be a Esport until they fix the above and add a bit more content, more maps and modes
Already crystal clear that current sPvP will become less and less popular.
Too early to tell how pvp will be a year from now or either 6 months.
It has a lot of potential, but the bug fixes/balances are coming in slow. Spectator mode and matchmaking are a must. The player base are leaving in quick numbers though …

Those that left will most likely will return to sample out the new stuff.

They will likely return when/if the issues are ever fixed

it certainly has potential and will only go as far as Anet is willing to put into it
