many topics are made every day and most of them deffend solid points of view about the current state of the game. However, only those made by “top players” receive the attention they deserve and even these become old in 1 week time.
I also have the feeling that there isn’t a general opinion on some topics (such as class balance). Some people will argue that X is the best class while others will answer it’s easy to counter. I’d love to see what does the majority think of the hot topics in the forums.
So I thought it would be interesting to make a quick survey where everyone could share their opinion and see nice statistics and graphics about the other players points of view.
Of course, Im not related to Anet nor any gw2 fansite or company. Im just a player with too much free time
If you feel the survey needs some tweaks, feel free to comment in the forums. Also, bump this thread with your opinions, dont let it die with few answers. Id like to gather legit data!
Note: I made this thread with a healthy interest for the game and the pvp community. I believe this thread belongs to the pvp forums and should not be moved to linksville.
Nice survey but i wish u wouldnt put the which class is the strongest/weakest in but instead ask us to rate each one on its own, forcing us to choose one isnt very accurate.
Also on which feature should be first priority u should add incentives.
Nice survey. Done as well.
And I agree on what guza says.
P.S.: Custom servers can solve many problems in case you can modify a lot of stuff and I hope they replace Hotjoin sooner or later. It should be a top priority, same with polishing our currently broken tournament and queue system.
Diagramms are really interesting. Only thing confused me is that ppl are pretty happy about the actual balance situation and in the same time Balancing the game is priority…
GJ anyway for doing A-Nets job.
The descriptions on the pie chart for “what’s most important” are too wordy and I had to do some master nerd sleuth work to figure out which bite was which.

Cool stuff, but it’s clearly biased towards the most popular forum opinions. An in-game survey would probably lead to very different results. I doubt that, in-game, so many people perceive the elementalists to be the best, especially compared to the likes of shatter mesmers, thieves and even warriors, to whom many still think they are OP.
Great survey, after taking it and reading the results I seem to be in line with most people in almost every reguard. Most interesting to see that the community (of the 80+ surveyed so far) is split almost evenly 20%/20%/20% in wanting Improving game balance, Adding new game types (my choice) and Releasing a working ladder.
Thanks for putting this together OP. Hope we can get more people to take it and get dev attention. Much easier to read than a 10 page forum thread.

Apparently now it’s too late to edit the survey. You’re right about the incentives topic, I knew I was missing something.
About classes: well I wanted to make a fast to answer survey and I thought percentage of votes would rate the opness of classes
Actually I think the “Which is most Op/UP” was a great way of doing this it works out in the end SURPRISE SURPRISE Engi/necro Voted Underpowered and No one voted them as Overpowered.
One guy is clearly a troll "Elementalist up, Warrior OP, Option 9, HotJoin (5)
Thanks for doing this. It makes it very clear how the community is feeling right now. I’m not one to go around shouting my opinion as it’s a much more moderate one than the regular “nerf this, OP that” attitude you see on the forums. It’s good to see that my fairly moderate view on things is fairly aligned with the majority. Seems the silent majority are a little more realistic
The one thing that I disagree with the majority on is ArenaNet’s communication. I feel that their communication is absolutely fine. The fact that they regularly post on the forums and attend the SOTG chats is great. You have to remember that the more time they spend communicating, the less time they spend developing new or needed ideas. I can really relate to the developers on the communication front as I play in a band in real life and it can be tough creating music, videos and other content for people at the same time as having a constant communication with fans. No communication and the fans forget about you, too much communication and you end up creating no content for them and they forget about you.
What I got from this ; People hated paid tournaments and loooooooooove hotjoin.
Paid tournaments had some kind of aura which made players feel like they couldn’t join solo like they did with the free tournament – which is ironic.

Wow I was surprised about ele still being strongest… honestly after last patch nerfs I don’t think they are as op as before. I had hard time voting for strongest class, but I ended up voting guardian simply cause they are used from begin to end in high end teams.
Don’t wanna despise you but I think Arenanet should be the ones making us pvp players surveys instead of only the monthly State of the game whereas only 2-3 players join in and can never express every single community concern and transmit all our thoughts like we can through this way. Good innitiative! Arenanet should show more interest by following small examples like this and collect decent data.

Most of the people who post on the forums get their opinions about the game from the forums. People still think engi, necro, warrior and even ranger are bad because of the forum’s self reinforcing feedback loop.
“We recognize that the changes to [ele] will essentially remove it from play. In the future,
we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable
but balanced. For now, we do not expect it to see serious use.” – ANet
Just did the survey. Good work IMO. The questions were a bit loaded and could have been better worded or more options but its the best survey Ive seen so far.
Rating classes 1-8 would have been nicer but harder to graph I spose.
I feel that the question about matchmaking was a bit unfair, we cannot judge a matchmaking system when there is not enough of a player base for any implementation of a system to operate properly. I personally gave it a 3 but I feel I needed to explain it as not the fault of the system, but rather the lack of foresight that A-Net (not saying the DEV employees made this decision as that is unfair as well) mishandling the PvP community with lack of well pretty much anything.
Mini-rant :
Rangers have had 3 significant changes since the game went live which are Bow Projectile speed increase (for all bows not just ranger), Melee pets no longer start each auto-attack at max range, and more recently entangle actually scaling with the condition stats of the ranger. I am sure most other classes can give such a list which is similar in length, this is completely pathetic for 6 months of patches. ANet as a whole adopted this “small patches” type philosophy but forgot about the second half of the small patch idea, which is small patches fast. What you have done for class balancing should have and could have been six weeks however you cling to the idea that silence is golden and private testers will show you more accurate information that your entire population that would care enough (either for themselves or for the game) to log into a test server to see what the new patch is about. Maybe my rant is going too long as a public test server and expedient balance patches are against company policy. I wish one day that gamers who purchase and support a game are looked upon as an investor in the game (because that is not a far stretch of the imagination) and shown which direction the game is going instead of it being hidden from us.
Nice Survey, should be pretty informative for ANet, the only Problem is, that ANet already has all the Infos they need to make GW2 a better game in terms of PvP!
I guess it’s really about the PvP-Department having too few ressources, but at least they now have a nicely put together Survey on whats important for the community.
The only Problem I have is that Question 2 and 3 (the ones after stating your Name), should be heavily skewed, because not many Players that have quit the game and don’t read the forums etc. will answer this Survey, because they don’t come across this Post. ^^’
It’s nice to see though that ppl also like some of the Stuff ANet put in, this might show them that they can improve the game, if they just listen to the community, identify the Problems and find a decent solution.
elementalists being overpowered is what i expected since bwe1, its literally in the design
if the class is too weak, nobody will play it because the risk vs reward is simply not worth it
if the class is balanced to accommodate this risk vs reward its overpowered
the only solution is to extend the number of basic skills other classes gain access too
heres an example, remove warriors f1 skill and weapon swap skill, replace it with three or more weapon sets as f1/f2/f3 skills, then place a pickable skill that would go where weapon swap was formally
this would be an excellent opportunity to change things like engineers kits, eles conjured weapons or rangers pets
Done. But I’m pretty sure Anet has a lots of data actually from ingame that they are looking at a lot. By having the the numbers how many eles are running around and how much they are winning/loosing (and when) gives a much better idea on balance compared to a"feeling class x is better than y".
But thanks for the survey, since Anet will not share their data

Cheers.
Numbers regarding classes are not really relevant.
People play a class according to their tastes, i may play ranger and enge, but my main ( and the class i’m spending most time with) will still be the thief.
@OP
Very good work.
But having people saying thief & mesmer are strongest class ( they are following the ele in those results) is very, VERY misleading.
I fear that regarding class balance, this survey won’t be very representative of the actual SotG.

Being scared of unfavourable Balance-changes (be it for the Metagame or for your favourite Class) would mean ANet would actually have to make significant changes, which hasn’t happened yet and shouldn’t be the main Focus of ANet IMHO.
I’d actually be pretty annoyed if we get like 20 changes to underwater-combat and 20 other pretty useless ones in the next Patch, because thats time and ressources better spent on new Features. We even see it in the Survey; even though Warrior seems to be clearly thought of as the weakest and Ele as the strongest class, Players don’t seem to be too unhappy with the current Balance.
